BOOK BLITZ w/EXCERPT - YA ACTION - LIKE A HERO by Michael J. Bowler

Like A Hero
by Michael J. Bowler
Publication date: October 18th 2022
Genres: Action, Adventure, Young Adult

BLURB

Courage can be costly. Orphaned brothers Vincent and Dennis Villanueva learn the truth of those words when they create a masked crime fighter and turn him loose on Los Angeles. The brainchild of fourteen-year-old Dennis and embodied in twenty-one-year-old Vincent, “Invictus” hits the streets to jumpstart apathetic Angelenos into taking a more active role in their city.

But reality isn’t a comic book. Vincent finds poverty, homelessness, drug addiction, abuse, and cast-off children. Labeled a vigilante and criminal, the shy grad student with formidable martial arts talent and abysmal people skills soon doubts his ability to make an impact.

Forced to straddle an ambiguous line between moral and legal, he becomes disheartened and secretive, hiding the truth of what he’s doing from Dennis and driving a wedge between them. Feeling neglected, Dennis infiltrates a dangerous drug ring to show Vincent he can be just as heroic, not knowing that the woman in charge is weaving an insidious plot against Invictus as part of her citywide scheme of vengeance. In a race against time, Vincent must regain Dennis’s trust before the brother he loves is lost to him forever.

SNEAK PEEK:

Dennis lay face down on the soccer field, while men in ski masks strolled among his prone classmates waving semi-automatic weapons at anyone who moved. He considered employing his martial arts skills, but being skinny and only passably good, such foolish courage would probably get him killed.

He shook his hair from in front of his eyes with a slight jerking motion and focused on James and Linda, lying on the field off to the side with the rest of the parents.

James had his head slightly raised and Dennis caught his eye. When a gun- man approached, James quickly returned his face to the grass. James wanted to intervene. That was obvious by the way he kept looking around for some kind of opening. But could he do anything without getting people killed?

The masked men called themselves “anarchists” and were well armed. Despite lying prone for the past forty minutes, Dennis had managed to spot sentries pa- trolling the rooftops, apparently stationed there to prevent the cops outside from storming the school and making their way to the field. He’d also noted the types of weapons these guys carried and considered how best each could be disarmed if this was a comic book scenario.

Except it wasn’t.

He considered the anarchists’ claims. They said they were “anti-capitalism” and “anti-public-school indoctrination,” but then they demanded twenty million as ransom for not killing him and his classmates, which sounded pretty capitalistic to him.

Raising his eyes once more, he noted a big, broad-shouldered dude wearing a black and blue ski mask, staring right at him while chatting with a burly guy holding an Uzi. Dennis averted his eyes and hoped he hadn’t called too much attention to himself. He’d overheard them earlier as they conversed by walkie-talkie. Masked guy was called “C-1” and burly guy “C-2” by the other anarchists, so he figured they ran the show.

He glanced over at Jackson and Kenny lying a few feet away. His two best friends looked terrified. Jackson’s curly hair partially hid his brown eyes, but Kenny’s bright blue ones screamed pure fear. Dennis tried for an encouraging smile, but it was difficult with his cheek pressed against the grass.

All his comic book scenarios started much like this one, except the hero al- ways knew what to do. As annoying as Robin could be, he’d know what to do even if Batman wasn’t around. Dennis’s mind raced with ideas. He knew James was packing—on duty or off, James always packed. But if he pulled his gun, kids would die.

I wish I’d thought of something when these guys first showed up.

Instead, he’d frozen with fear when the masked men flooded onto the field. And now with everything that had gone down since, Dennis trembled with the terrifying possibility that someone would die. Maybe him. Sadly, he wasn’t the hero of his dreams.

He peered at the administration buildings. Long and single story, the two main wings spread the length of the field. His gaze traveled up and he squinted with confusion. The sentry who’d been on duty at the north end was gone.

What the…?

Dennis knew his weaponry from playing Call of Duty and other war games, and that guy had been patrolling with an Artic Warfare Super Magnum sniper rifle, likely a .338 Lapua Magnum, but Dennis was too far away to be sure of the model.

Only now the guy was gone. With C-2 barely ten feet away, Dennis used caution to scan the south roof. That sentry was gone, too. SWAT maybe? He knew James’ mean-ass boss would have called in the big guns for something like this. But he was also sure those sentries had been up there no more than two minutes ago.

Could it be Invictus?

His heart thumped with hope. Vincent must know about this by now. Dennis pressed his face into the grass and pretended to look scared. Hell, he didn’t have to pretend. He was scared!

Book Description:
Fifteen-year-old Alex and his learning-disabled friends barely survived the events of Spinner, but their nightmare has only just begun.

Alex’s wheelchair has never stopped him from doing what he wants, but his supernatural power to heal every human ailment known to science has put him in the crosshairs of a dangerous doomsday cult that will stop at nothing to capture him and his long-lost twin, Andy, who can shift illness from one person to another. When the boys combine their “gifts,” they unleash the power to control life and death.

Now Alex, Andy, and the others have been kidnapped by the U.S. military. On a creepy Air Force base in the remote Nevada desert, they must decide who to trust and who to fear while uncovering secrets this base wants to hide from the world. Who is the young boy with unusual abilities who’s treated like a soldier? What is hidden in an ultra-secret hangar that no one can access? And what unnatural experiments are conducted in that closed-off laboratory?

As Alex unravels these mysteries, he strives to bond with his twin, but Andy is distant and detached, trusting no one. He’s also more attracted to the dangerous power they wield than Alex would like. When misplaced faith in science ignites a hidden lust for supremacy, rescue can only come from the most unlikely source, and Alex must confront a terrible truth.

Excerpt:

He studied his silent brother, staring upward as though hypnotized.
“You okay, Andy?”
Without dropping his gaze in the slightest, Andy said, “You dreamed about Teacher too, didn’t you?”
Alex flinched, his breath momentarily on hold. “Yeah.”
Now it was Martin who looked confused. He shifted position on the chair and that’s when Alex noticed the gun strapped to his belt. Martin studied them both in the dark, his face hidden in shadow. “What are you guys talking about?”
When Andy remained silent, Alex pulled his gaze from his brother’s back and faced Martin. “A teacher we both had. She’s part of the group that’s trying to get me. She says she’s gonna find me no matter where I go.”
Martin’s expression turned from grim to resolute. “I’ll protect you.” He patted the gun in its holster.
Alex eyed his brother once more. “She…she said you belong to her, Andy.”
Alex thought he saw his brother recoil, but the moon wasn’t completely full, so he couldn’t be sure.
“I won’t be in a cage ever again,” Andy said quietly, his voice almost a whisper, as though talking to himself. “I told that to Teacher and I meant it.”
Martin leaped to his feet, startling the boys.
Alex whirled to face him. “What?”
Martin threw a finger to his lips and reached down, pulling out the gun and pointing it over Alex’s head.
Now Alex heard it. Movement. The sound of people trying hard to be quiet, but a slight crunch of gravel gave them away.
Martin waved the boys behind him and darted in front, gun aimed toward the house.
A red light rounded the corner and before Alex could even think of the red light that had killed Juan back at the church, Martin fired his weapon. One pop, muffled, like he had a heavy sock over the barrel. The red light spun crazily and then toppled to the grass.
Alex glanced at Andy with wide eyes. They’d been found!
After that, everything happened so fast Alex could barely process it. Another figure rounded the corner with a gun and fired. A tiny burst of light accompanied the pop of a gunshot, and then Martin grunted, collapsing to the lawn.
“Martin!” Andy dashed around Alex’s chair and knelt by the unmoving form of their protector.
More figures rounded the corner of the house and bore down on them. Alex backed up, but suddenly Andy grasped his hand. Alex felt the rush of power surging through him—just as it had at the church when they’d brought Roy back to life—heavy floodwaters that meant their combined powers had been activated. He looked down at Andy, still kneeling beside Martin’s body.
Andy whispered, “Death, to me!”
Alex stiffened, his vision growing dim, his mind filled with a gray nothingness that terrified him.
As though from miles away, he heard Andy hiss, “Death to them!”

Author Info
Michael J. Bowler is an award-winning author of the five-book urban fantasy series The Lance Chronicles, the mystery-thriller The Film Milieu Series, the supernatural-sci-fi The Healer Chronicles, and several standalone books. He also writes screenplays. His horror screenplay, “Healer,” was a Semi-Finalist, and his urban fantasy script, “Like A Hero,” was a Finalist in the Shriekfest Film Festival and Screenplay Competition, and his sci-fi screenplay, “The God Machine,” was the 2017 Scriptapalozza First Place Winner.

He worked as producer, writer, and/or director on several ultra-low-budget horror films, including “Fatal Images,” “Hell Spa,” “Club Dead,” and “Things II.”

He taught high school in Hawthorne, California, both in general education and to students with learning disabilities, in subjects ranging from English and Strength Training to Algebra, Biology, and Yearbook.

He has also been a volunteer Big Brother to eight different boys with the Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters program and a long-time volunteer within the juvenile justice system in Los Angeles.

He has been honored as Probation Volunteer of the Year, YMCA Volunteer of the Year, California Big Brother of the Year, and 2000 National Big Brother of the Year. The “National” honor allowed him and three of his Little Brothers to visit the White House and meet the president in the Oval Office. He also adopted a child in 2020.

His goal as an author is for teens to experience empowerment and hope; to see themselves in his diverse characters; to read about kids who face real-life challenges; and to see how kids like them can remain decent people in an indecent world. The most prevalent theme in his writing and his work with youth is this: as both a society, and as individuals, we’re better off when we do what’s right, rather than what’s easy.

The Book Junkie Reads . . .Reckless Dreams  Interview with  . . . Michael J. Bowler . . .

How would you describe you style of writing to someone that has never read your work?
Because I taught high school English for so long and my target audience as an author is teenagers, I try not to over describe everything because teens, as a rule, get bored quickly if the story doesn’t move along. Reviewers have described my writing as like “watching a movie” in their heads as they read. Perhaps my background as a screenwriter and low-budget filmmaker has contributed to this style, but it also leads me away from character info dumps. I share character details as needed to serve the storyline, rather than offering up a “profile” as each character is introduced.

Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you?
Writing has always flowed freely for me and I’m able to sit and write in almost any environment. Even while working on low budget films in the past, when I wasn’t needed, I’d plop down with a pad and pen and happily write my next screenplay or book. I typically play out scenes in my mind while working out or doing chores and then type them into the computer when I have time.

Have you found yourself bonding with any of your character(s)? If so which one(s)?
I’ve always felt especially close to Lance from my Lance Chronicles series and Alex from the Healer Chronicles because I think I put more of myself into those two than into any of my other characters. Both have an inherent empathetic nature, which I have always had, and both try, in their respective ways, to make the world a better place.

Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?
Following the release of Shifter, I’m preparing to launch the final volume of this trilogy in July. It will wrap up this current storyline, but because I love the characters so much and have left open so many story possibilities, I hope to bring them back in another series down the line. Later in the year, my plans are to release the third in my Film Milieu Series, which are loosely connected thrillers set in some way against a backdrop of the film industry. The first two books are standalone with a very small connection, but the third one combines characters from both books into a mystery thriller of someone stalking a group of teens on a movie set.

If you could have dinner/dinner party with 7 fictional characters, who would they be?
Given that I write books for teens or middle graders, my party invite list would include famous literary youth because it would be fun to see them interact with one another. It would also be fun to pick their brains about the stories each inhabited and what some of their feelings are about the choices they made within those stories. Here’s my list, along with one question I would ask each child (though I’d have many).
Huckleberry Finn (from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn)– Did you ever find out that helping Jim wouldn’t damn you to Hell because you were doing the right thing? If so, how did that make you feel?
Peter Pan (from Peter Pan) – At any point in your long life, did you ever regret not growing up? If so, when, and why?
Mowgli (from The Jungle Books) – After living with humans once you turned seventeen, how often were you tempted to go back to the jungle and stay with the animals? Why?
Bastian (from The Neverending Story) – What did you learn about yourself from your experiences using the Auryn in Fantasia?
Jim Hawkins (from Treasure Island) – How strongly would you defend John Silver in court should he ever be arrested for piracy, and what would you say in his defense?
Ralph – (from Lord of the Flies) – What happened to you after the rescue?
Gavroche – (from Les Miserables) – Did you ever suspect that the two boys you took in were your younger brothers?

EXCERPT:

He felt eyes on him and realized Andy was staring again. He held up his near-empty bottle. “Water?”

Andy nodded, so Alex reached around behind Roy’s lolling head to snag a second bottle, tossing it toward Andy. Even though the bottle was perfectly aimed for an easy catch, Andy didn’t even raise his arms. The bottle struck his chest and dropped into his lap. Andy’s blue eyes flashed with anger, the piercing cobalt color almost burning with fire.

“Why did you do that?” His hard tone unnerved Alex.

“You, uh, was supposed to, you know, catch it.”

When Andy just stared at him with complete incomprehension, Alex tossed his own bottle into the air and caught it deftly with his right hand. Andy still didn’t react, but the surge of anger in those pools of blue faded.

Alex furrowed his brow as he cradled his almost empty bottle. “Didn’t no one ever teach you to play catch?”

Andy shook his head, his long blond hair swaying back and forth like dangling vines.

Alex began to understand that Andy hadn’t experienced even the most basic childhood experiences.

And I thought I had it bad!

He offered a smile. “It’s okay, bro. We’s together now, so I’ll help you learn all the stuff you missed. Long as it don’t got much reading or math in it.” He chuckled, but Andy’s impassive expression told him that, once again, his brother didn’t get the joke.

Well, Alex thought, we have the rest of our lives to figure each other out. Long as we can stay free.

He frowned at the last thought as he observed Andy twisting the cap off his bottle and swigging almost the entire contents in a loud, single gulp.

“Did you ever, you know, do the death thing to the doctor too?”

Andy shook his head again. “The others were careful after Teacher, and I never got another chance. I did get another teacher, though.”

Alex leaned forward in his chair to listen with keen interest because an unsettling feeling had just come over him. “What did that one look like?”

“You have already seen Teacher. At the place where we saved Roy. Long yellow hair and a different shaped body from mine or yours.”

Alex froze, his breathing on hold.

Ms. G!

“I know it looked like Teacher was dead, but that wasn’t true,” Andy went on conversationally, oblivious to the fear Alex felt squeezing his heart like a clenched fist, “I don’t think this one can be killed like the other one. That’s what Doctor told me, anyway.”

Alex sat back in his chair, weak with renewed despair. He’d seen her shot when she tried to run away. He’d seen her fall. He’d thought his greatest enemy was finally gone.

“You sure she’s alive?”

“She?” Andy tilted his head in confusion. “I don’t know that word. If you mean Teacher, then yes, I’m sure.”

Tight with renewed fear, Alex glanced at the others slumbering peacefully around him.

It wasn’t over, after all.

Excerpt:
The door to the dorm is open and I step in. It looks like a huge barn with a worn hardwood floor studded with row after row of folding cots. Since it’s dinnertime, all the cots are empty except one.
An old man with surprisingly alert eyes lies atop that cot staring at me. Most of the older people who frequent the shelter have rheumy eyes, always moist and often clouded, because they’ve struggled for so long on the street, and maybe because they have alcohol or drug problems.
“Come here, boy.” His voice is raspy and echoes faintly in the cavernous room.
At first, I don’t recognize him. True, there are hundreds of homeless on the streets every day, but I’ve been volunteering on Skid Row since I was fourteen and after almost three years, like I said, I know most of them. I’m  thinking  that if this guy is a regular, he’s passed under my radar.
And yet…
I have seen him, I think. Not here at the shelter. Walking to my car…?  Yes!  Several times over these past two or three weekends, I’ve noticed him.  He’s caught my eye because, every time, he’s stared at me so intently it made  me shiver. He’d be pretending to rummage through a dumpster, but his eyes would follow me until I got into my car. I confess his gaze made me uncom- fortable, but I let it go. I’ve learned to shrug off such creepy feelings because   so many of the people I meet down here have mental health issues.
I steel myself and walk between the rows of empty cots—each with its  neat bedroll awaiting an occupant—and stop before the stranger  with  the scary eyes. Unlike most of the people, his clothes aren’t especially dirty and he doesn’t smell like someone who’s been on the streets for a long time. Wisps of gray hair stick out from his head at haphazard angles and his face has so many wrinkles I don’t think I could count them if I tried.
I don’t make eye contact, but that’s because I never do. Not here, not anywhere. People tell me I’m the definition of “shy” and they’re right.
“You asked to see me, sir?” I say deferentially, my gaze on his gnarled hands.
He rolls over onto his back. “I been watching you, boy. Seen you on the streets a lot.”
I freeze. So, I didn’t imagine it! “Yeah?”
“Yeah.” The voice sounds like sandpaper scraping along a fence. “Rich boy like you helping out poor folk like me. What gives?”
I’ve been asked this question by all my relatives, so I’m ready with my answer. “I think people like me who are lucky to have a lot should help people who don’t. And I hope I’m making the world better instead of worse. The kids  I know just party and think about themselves all the time. I don’t want to be like that.”
A crooked smile cracks the wrinkled face. “You’re the one, all right.” “The one?”
With effort, he unclasps his hands with their swollen knuckles and holds his right arm out toward me. It shakes, like he barely has enough strength to keep it aloft. “Take my hand, boy.”
Unlike my best friend J.C., who never touches any of the people when he comes with me to the shelters, I usually have no worries about contact. But I hesitate this time. I mean, this guy has been watching me on the streets. But kindness makes me swallow my anxiety and I clasp his hand. He squeezes gently.
“Look into my eyes.”
Ordinarily, I’d just glance into his eyes and then look away. But that com- manding tone compels me. I raise my eyes and focus on his. They’re brown  and alert and they shimmer beneath the overhead lights. We  lock gazes, and     I stiffen. Something I can’t quite pin down swells within me, like a surge of emotion. I suddenly feel… different.
All the tension drains from his face in an instant. Relaxed, he releases my hand, pulling his arm back with great deliberation. He rests both hands across his stomach and gazes up at me with obvious gratitude.
“Thank you, boy. Now I can die.”
I shudder. “Wha-what do you mean?”
The man offers a gentle smile. “I gave you a great gift, boy. Or maybe a curse. Had it so long, I can’t be sure no more. But I couldn’t die till I passed it on.”
I stand frozen in place, my heart thumping, my breathing on hold. A gift?
A curse? “Uh, pass what on, sir?”
He chuckles and it’s a wheezy sound, like he doesn’t have much air in his lungs. “Just you calling an old bum like me “sir” proves you be the one.”
I feel different inside and his words scare me because I know he’s done
something to me. “I’m just a regular kid, sir. Nothing special.”
That chuckle erupts again, wheezier this time. “Oh, you’re more than a regular kid. Like you said, most kids only care about stupid crap like partying. You’ll  use my gift well.” He lapses into a coughing fit that scares me even  more.
“Want me to get some help?”
He waves away the idea with one hand. After a few moments, the hacking ceases. “No need. It’s  my time.” He suddenly looks really pasty and gray in   the face. “When you find someone worthy, boy, pass on the gift to them,” he whispers, his voice very soft and almost inaudible. He closes his eyes and lies still. “Until then, make wise choices.”
Then he stops breathing. Literally, just stops. One second his chest is ris- ing and falling and then the next, there’s nothing. I want to shake him back to life and ask a thousand questions, but instead I run from the room to get help.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with Michael J. Bowler . . .
How would you describe you style of writing to someone that has never read your work?
I’ve been told I have an unusual writing style because readers say they feel like they’re watching a movie unfold in their minds while reading my work. My readers like this style, but I’ve found some editors and publishers do not. Perhaps because of my background in filmmaking, I tend to think of a book as though I’m directing a movie and try to put in all the camera angles and necessary sensory details. I’ve been told by editors that even if the POV is 1st person, I should write things like “J.C. chases after me,” rather than how I wrote this moment: “I start jogging down Main, but soon I’m running, ignoring the dust I kick up from the sidewalk as I hurry in the direction Hank took. I hear J.C. curse under his breath and then his footsteps as he follows.” In the real world, if I’m running away, I can’t see J.C. following me, I’d only hear him, so I feel my way brings more reality and immediacy to the moment. Many editors disagree.

Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you?
Writing flows pretty naturally for me. I cogitate on stories for awhile and even play out exact scenes in my mind before writing, but once I begin, the first draft flows rather quickly. It’s the revising that takes up the lion’s share of my time, but that’s my favorite part.

Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each character all the way through to the page? Do you people watch to help with development? Or do you build upon your character during story creation?
I start off with my characters following a certain arc that I feel best serves the storyline because I always know how my stories will end before I start writing. But more often than not, characters start to write themselves and say or do things I never planned out in advance. Sometimes, I try to resist these intuitive character choices, but more often than not, those choices turn out to be correct. I think the nurturing of characters comes as they continuously interact with each other and find their own voices along the way.

Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character(s)? If so which one(s)?
I tend to bond with many of my characters, especially Lance, the MC in my five-book series The Lance Chronicles. In guiding a character like Lance through so many adventures and life challenges over five books, I couldn’t help but bond with him. I also feel close to Leo, the MC/narrator of my latest book, I Know When You’re Going To Die, because in some ways he’s like me as a teen and I can truly feel his struggles with shyness and social anxiety.

Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?
I have completed two more novels for the teen/young adult market, as well as one for middle grade readers. All have been edited multiple times and continue to be polished. I hope they see the light of day in the near future because I feel they are strong stories that will engage the right readers.
