BOOK BLITZ w/EXCERPT - PARANORMAL FANTASY - THE ACCIDENTAL SEREPH (Carran Hollow Fated Mate, #1) by Maci Aurora

The Accidental Sereph
Carran Hollow Fated Mate, #1
by Maci Aurora
Publication date: June 25th 2024
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance

BLURB

When Atlas Black, a bad boy with a reputation in Carran Hollow, walks into The Hole-in-the-Wall bar investigating a demon sighting, it’s mostly business as usual until he comes face-to-face with his calix—his fated-mate. Except Ivy Day, oblivious to the world of seraphs and demons, thinks she’s stranded in Carran Hollow because a stupid bus has broken down. She just needs a ride to get to the next bus in order to get to her sister across the country. While the guy in the bar hitting on her is hotter than any human has the right to be, unless he’ll give her a lift, she doesn’t have any patience for anything else. But little does she know, Atlas is about to take her on the ride of her life—that is, as long as they can get through the demons.

EXCERPT:

[Rome] pulls his phone from his pocket and glances at it. “Bus coming into the Hollow.”

Samson and I groan. Buses mean tourists. Obnoxious tourists drag in the demon riff-raff hiding among them, and they aren’t usually the organized kind, but rather the fledgling demons or the deserters attached to the taedae, unsighted humans.

“Not it,” Samson says.

“How’s that injury?” Rome asks me.

“Not an injury,” I repeat. “How many times do I have to say it?”

Rome looks me over, eyes narrowed, as if he can see beyond my skin and bones. “Fine,” he relents. “You go into town. Wait for the bus to roll in, see if any demons have hitched a ride.” He points at me. “But don’t engage, not without backup.”

I’m already walking over to the cabinet, pulling on my harness, sliding a sharpened dagger into a sheath, along with another into my boot. “Me? Engage?” I glance at my bow but leave it, knowing I probably won’t need it. Those off the bus are rarely difficult to dispatch. I glance at Rome with a smile. “Never.”

Samson laughs.

I shrug into my black leather jacket and grab my helmet before I’m out the door, headed for the heart of town. After driving past Lowry’s Gas and Sundries, where the bus stops, and seeing the hulking, metal can is already empty, I ride down Main. I park my bike, cross to the other side, and duck into The Hole in the Wall, a small bar sandwiched between a diner called The Getaway, and a witchy souvenir shop that sells Carran Hollow guidebooks. One of these three establishments is often the first stop for tourists, and thereby their parasitic demons, when they reach town.

My eyes adjust to the dark. There’s an older guy playing guitar near the door. The shiny wooden bar is on the left and runs the length of the room. There are a few people lined up along the counter, atop barstools. Booths—mostly empty—line the right wall, and in between is a stretch of space big enough to walk between the two. I’ve been here before. I have been in every single shop in Carran Hollow, every single home—though the owners haven’t known I was there. The Hollow is my town.

The locals glance at me then look away, giving me a wide berth. They might know me. They might know I’m a Black. If they don’t, they feel it—that sensation skittering across their skin telling them danger is near. That’s all that’s needed.

Excerpt:
The sound of the waves crashing down below, the impending fog rolling in, the wind sending curses past my cheeks, streaked with salt water—all of it seemed to have been put into slow motion as I stood there, full of rage and powerless against this demon as she held my daughter’s life in her tainted, dead hands. Eight words were all I was afforded in the two seconds that followed. “You were the one who let me in.”
And then it all happened at once. There was a "uttering of feathers, the sensation of a stick being forced into my hand, and the sound of my own screams as my daughter’s body fell; but then I just as quickly lunged forward, standing on air and pointing my bit of willow down at her body just before it was about to make contact with the jagged rocks below.

Maddie, now in possession of her own body, stared up at me with wide eyes and a gaping mouth as I floated over her like the witch I once was. And before she could utter a single word, before I could make out the laughter that seemed to be drifting back into the fog, I used my wand to lift her back up to the cliff and set her down before landing back on solid earth myself.

Author Info
Mariah Stillbrook, originally from Iowa, lives in Colorado with her white German shepherd, husband, and little girl. She graduated from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. She spends most of her days writing, reading, and enjoying the occasional hike. In her late twenties she realized that her writing was missing something, magic. She now focuses her writing on horror and urban fantasy in both adult and young adult genres.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with . . . Mariah Stillbrook . . .

How would you describe you style of writing to someone that has never read your work?

I write urban fantasy and horror in both adult and young adult. However, I write my young adult books so adults may enjoy them also. I’ve been told that I have a literary style. Most of my characters will have a bit of an edge to them—I’m a libra, and I’m their god, so . . .  Some of my favorite authors are Chuck Palahniuk, Charlotte Bronte, Robert McCammon, and Neil Gaiman. I would say there’s proof of this in my prose.

Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you?

It flows naturally to me. Sure, there are days, weeks, months, and sometimes even years where creativity seems to flitter away, but I think that’s fairly normal. I’ve been writing for most of my life; it’s just that over the years it has become more of an intense practice and . . . obsession.

Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each character all the way through to the page? Do you people watch to help with development? Or do you build upon your character during story creation?

Psychology of the human mind is something I cling to; therefore, character development is my favorite. It’s the characters who usually find me first—their world (or worlds) follow soon after. As soon as I begin bringing them to life and hear their voices, they sort of just build themselves. I do people watch (I think most authors probably do), and I’ve had a string of odd jobs that have allowed me to see a wide variety of humans. I’ve also been a body worker, and that sort of work lends itself towards the energy of several different personalities. I believe it has all aided in my colorful creativity.

Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?

I’ve been working on a new horror called Betsy. It’s about a closeted lesbian girl named Roxy. It takes place in small town America during the mid-nineties, and the antagonist is a possessed mannequin named Betsy who lives in an antique shop called Perfectly Vintage.

If you could have dinner/dinner party with 7 fictional character, who would they be?

Snape (Harry Potter)

Jane Eyre (Jane Eyre)

Kvothe (The Name of the Wind)

Kaladin (The Way of Kings)

Andy the Squirrel (Funny Farm)

The Creature (Frankenstein)

The Narrator from Fight Club

BLURB

Danger doesn’t lurk in the shadows. It barges in and smacks you in the face.

After years of working in the Emergency Department, Sara thought nothing could surprise her, but when the deceased victim of a stabbing opened his eyes and demanded his knife back, she knew her life had taken a bizarre turn.

Leszek had guarded the magic of the Nether before the first human set foot in his lands. His power was absolute, his authority unchallenged. The world might change, but even ruling from the shadow, no one, not even hardened criminals, dared to question his judgment.

When he was called to clean up the mess an unruly vampire caused in the hospital, Leszek barely contained his irritation when his power couldn’t make the stubborn doctor forget his existence. Instead, she looked him in the eye, challenging him to leave, and he listened.

Sara’s courage and audacity were intriguing, but her magic captivated him with its beauty. The magic she was unaware of. She may be human, but even humans have their uses, and Sara will soon learn there are consequences to capturing the undivided attention of the Tricity Mafia’s boss.

This fascinating woman might haunt his dreams, but Sara’s magic made her a target for a dangerous, emerging power, and Leszek has to decide if he will sacrifice her to save his domain.

EXCERPT:

The knife had penetrated his chest to its hilt, and while the paramedics were desperately trying to save him, I knew this one was long gone. The grey cloud of death covered him, the soulless body bouncing rhythmically during the chest compressions. He had no chance, but I couldn’t tell my team their efforts were pointless. There was no science to back up my claim, so medical training kicked in and, taking a deep breath, I issued the order.

‘Stop chest compressions.’

‘No, he has no pulse.’ The paramedic tried to argue, instantly making me wish Damian and Rysiek were here, but one look at my face and his voice faltered.

‘He’s running on empty. How do you plan on restarting an engine without fuel?’ I said and turned to the team. ‘Secure the airway, prepare O neg and get me a thoracotomy set. We need to crack him open to plug this hole in his heart.’

Like a Formula One pit crew, my team was ready in less than a minute. Pride surged at their response as I bent over to start the incision when the patient’s bright blue eyes snapped open in surprise, and a cold, male hand grabbed my wrist in a vice-like grip.

‘Oh, hell no, you are not doing that.’ His voice was cold and commanding, and the man, about to be opened up like a giant clamshell, sat up, the dagger still fully embedded in his chest. What the actual fuck, I thought, looking at him in shock. It is one thing to feel like there is more to the world than science can explain and a whole other one to stare at this discovery in its smugly amused face.

‘Did you just pull a Lazarus on me?’ I heard myself saying, despite my voice being drowned out by screams of terror and the clattering of fallen medical equipment. I didn’t care. Why would my attention be anywhere other than the talking corpse before me? Maybe years of conditioning, medical missions to war-torn countries and stories my grandmother told me; stories that had suddenly become very real prepared me for it because I was as calm as he was dead. I will never break a fucking mirror on the full moon again, I thought, observing him as he looked around, his gaze eventually falling on me.

‘Pulled a what?’ He asked, still holding tight to my wrist, and for no apparent reason, I reached out with my free hand, pulling the knife from his chest. Some say emergency people are built differently, and while I still could barely believe what just happened, part of me methodically analysed the situation. This man was definitely alive, yet no blood escaped the wound, and I bit my lip, trying to comprehend the insanity. He didn’t even wince when I examined the gaping hole, poking it with an inquisitive finger. He just looked on with impatient annoyance, utterly unphased, before asking again.

‘I pulled a what?’

The knife in my hand looked odd. I’d seen my fair share of weapons, combat, folding, and kitchen knives, but this was different. It was vibrating… no. Looking carefully, it didn’t move, but something felt… tension. That was it. It felt as if it were under tension, like the cable on a bridge or, more accurately, a string on a bow, ready to release its murderous power, aimed at this man before me. In fact, it refused to be pointed anywhere else. Nothing about this blade was normal. Ornate Slavic engravings adorned the metal that, whilst bright and clean, felt like it belonged in a museum. I had to resist the urge to stab it back into the gaping hole in the man’s chest. I wasn’t sure whether the knife was driving the desire or my curiosity at seeing the strange man’s reaction. Then, the real, screaming, noisy world crashed into my consciousness, and I focused on answering his question.

‘Did you just resurrect on me, like Lazarus, or maybe Jesus would be more accurate as nobody here helped you? What the fuck are you, a zombie, vampire, or something else that sparkles?’ My rambling question made the very alive man laugh.

‘Yeah, or something. Now, be a darling and give me the dagger. It still wants my life, and I see you are keen to give in to the temptation.’ He commanded, looking into my eyes as if trying to reach into the depths of my soul, but his five minutes were gone. My anger broke through the shock of the situation. Now he faced a very focused woman with a powerful urge to tear him a new one… newer than the one that brought him here, anyway.

‘Pack it in, Romeo. First, the dagger is evidence, and second, I’m not your darling, so you can stop trying to make puppy eyes at me. I’ve seen this constipated look far too many times. That is borderline creepy. Who, or should I say, what, are you?’

The Immortal Brotherhood, #3

Thomas Greenley, “The Time Traveler,” is the only person to ever master time with minimal side effects. Until he breaks it. Holding Bev hostage, Malachi Rundin forces Thomas to alter time to obtain a powerful weapon of destruction.

Though only Thomas can fix the broken timeline, he doesn’t know if he has the strength. Because waiting on the wrong side of that timeline is the love of his life—Pippa. In this third installment of the Immortal Brotherhood, Thomas must undo his mistakes and risk everything to put his world and Time itself back into balance. Meanwhile, Trixie must manage her new powers in Faerieland, help her friends flee the destructive ripples in time, and hold back the Faerie Queen's wrath.

The Unexpected Queen

The Immortal Brotherhood, #4

Trixie Black never thought of herself as a princess, but when she inherits the throne to Faerieland, along with a marriage proposal from a dark fae prince, her life becomes a royal pain.

Not only does she have to deal with courtly politics, suspicions that she’s not queen material, and controlling her ever-growing magical powers, but there is also the matter of a pain-in-the-ass prophecy. It is foretold that she will unite with the Unseelie and become an evil tyrant. But she’s been there and done that with the villain thing, and she won’t go down that path again. Trixie must prove to the world that she’s changed.

Thankfully, her sister Raina always has her back, as does her aunt, Queen Gloriana. Life would be grand if most of the Immortal Brotherhood weren’t watching her every move, waiting for her to mess up so they can drive a stake through her heart—both literally and figuratively.

But Trixie is no helpless princess. She’s a fighter. She will fight for her throne, her loved ones, and even her very soul. She just has to disprove the prophecy, uncover the true intentions of the Unseelie Prince Thane who thinks he can just waltz into her palace and marry her, and go toe to toe with Arabella Larkin, the most formidable witch who’s ever lived. No biggy.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . INHERITANCE (Deadly Curiosities, #4) . . . I find fun with this series. Not fun as in hah-hah. But fun as in the world is so vividly crafted in a deadly kind of way. I loved seeing Cass, Teag, Sorren and others along the way. She must solve the mystery of the bound object and of course stop a killer.

Courtney Patterson was a new and interesting voice for me with this series. I did find that I had a entertaining journey in the world that was all Gail Z. Martin and the wonderfully crafted characters from the Deadly Curiosities series.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Gail Z. Martin. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Cassidy Kincaide runs Trifles & Folly in modern-day Charleston, an antiques and curio shop with a dangerous secret. Cassidy can read the history of objects by touching them, and she teams up with friends and allies who use magic and paranormal abilities to get rid of cursed objects and keep Charleston and the world safe from supernatural threats.

Caribbean ghosts terrorize Charleston and start racking up a body count. Then Beckford Pendlewood, the heir to a powerful family of dark warlocks, shows up raving about a bound demon locked in a lost box and begs sanctuary. Can Cassidy and her friends find the demon box, stop the killer ghosts, and break the Pendlewood curse before Beckford's murderous cousins and the vengeful demon destroy them all?
