BLURB
Some secrets should just stay buried.

After the sudden death of her great-aunt, Kylie Beckett lands her dream job as a forensic photographer in the small seaside town where she was born. But once there, a series of murders and the theft of a dangerous relic force Kylie to uncover the dark truth about her ancestors.

With the help of newfound family, she learns to harness unconscious powers to stop the vengeful and unstable Pale Witch before she unleashes a demonic spirit on Salem, Massachusetts once again.

Shall we begin?

Excerpt - Chapter 1
Just as she was in life, Deliverance was a demon in death.
Her cruel whispers invaded quiet conversations. Her hate-filled face raced past in the shadows. Destroying the body didn’t end her baneful abuses. Instead, she became limitless and everywhere, always.
A thick breath of fog rolled in from Derby Wharf, obscuring much of the town in its salty grip. Beneath a brick wall, Angela’s torso hovered close to the ground like a disembodied specter. It was just past the witching hour.
Trying to ignore the demon’s voice, her foot forced a shovel tip between the invading roots of an old elm tree. Late summer rain softened the first two feet, but the deeper she went, the more arduous her task became. As its blade struck the cold earth, the shovel’s handle creaked once more. If it could just hold out a bit longer, weeks of their nocturnal labor would come to an end tonight.
The whispers beneath her feet intensified into a full-throated growl. Too loud. Angela pulled a small bottle of water out of her pocket and sprinkled it over the soil. Its bitter blessing drove the sound into silence once more.
For years, drugs numbed the whispers and obscured the demon’s face, but Angela’s gatekeepers eventually tossed her out like many crumpled bits of garbage now littering the streets of the North Shore. In Boston, she found ways to calm the chaos by coercing the gullible. Many survived their interactions with her. Some were not as fortunate.
During a moment of weakness, she tried to end her own life, but Lyssa and Hekate kept her from the slumber of death. Instead, her beloved Goddesses graciously bestowed visions of destiny upon their troubled servant.
The shovel finally bumped against something other than rocks and roots. A rush of excitement flowed through Angela’s veins. Turning the blade over, she scraped back the earth from the old pine lid. Then she jammed the shovel’s metal edge between the boards.
Nails loosened, but the pressure snapped the rusted collar from the shovel’s wooden handle. She grumbled something incoherent and tossed the broken tool aside. It landed with a soft thud onto the foraged slab of plywood she’d been using to cover the grave.
Adrenaline in her veins shifted to pulsing dopamine.
Angela grabbed the axe lying next to the rejected shovel. She lifted it above her head and let its blade fall onto the rotting timber. Not too hard. Just enough to break it. Must not harm the treasure inside. She set the axe aside and grabbed hold of the broken coffin lid. When one of the planks snapped in half, it ripped open the skin on her knuckles.
A face stared back at her. Though not recognizable in its present state, it still gave Angela nauseating chills. Crimson drops christened the bones as she placed them one by one inside a black trash bag. It wasn’t the first time the demon drew blood from her.
When she was done, she pulled the plywood back over the open pit and spread a thin layer of earth on top with the shovel blade. Once more, her work was hidden. Then she picked up the axe and swung it hard against the cheap concrete headstone. It tumbled over into the tall weeds. She struck it several times more, letting fury flood her soul.
Angela rolled over in the darkness and opened her eyes in a panic. Did she just come from the cemetery, or was it something she had yet to do?
No.
She reached over and touched the black bag lying next to her. It had been days since that task had been completed. Time slipped back and forth so easily sometimes.
Obtaining the bones was one step. Soon, Angela would bend the demon to her will with the threat of silencing it forever. Remnants of the forbidden ritual remained engraved in her mind. The rest, the part she wasn’t allowed to read, was in a Book of Shadows hidden somewhere in this house.
Muffled voices from the room above interrupted the dead’s incessant whispers.

Drawn to playwriting from an early age, S.A. Sizemore began writing professionally while studying English and theater arts in college. After producing several plays regionally in Southern California, Sizemore pivoted to the themed entertainment industry. Whispers of the Pale Witch is the first installment of the Beckett Coven series inspired by Sizemore’s ancestral connection to the Salem Witch Trials. She is a full member of the Dramatists Guild of America, proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, European and Cherokee/Chickahominy decent, and resides in California with her wife and two dogs, Agatha and Harry.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with . . . S.A. Sizemore . . .

How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?

In terms of how I create a story, I’m very much what I call and hourglass writer. I spend a great deal of time researching my plot ideas and characters while I create an outline. That might take months or years. Once I’m ready, I crank out the first draft within a month or two. Then I spend a great deal of time rewriting, editing, and polishing.

Regarding the writing itself, I write in the 3rd person and jump back and forth between the characters’ prospectives. One moment you are seeing what’s happening through my protagonist’s eyes, then a couple of paragraphs later you are seeing the same thing through a different character, perhaps even the villain. Those shifting perspectives give the reader a constantly shifting view of what’s going on. It can also build great tension when you see two people struggling to communicate with one another, hiding secrets, or manipulating one another.

I often don’t like telling a completely linear story. Time will become quite fluid as we go further along in this book series.

My background is in script writing, so my ability to propel a story through dialogue is strong. I love writing the way people actually talk. We stop and start, change subjects suddenly, and talk over one another.

Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you?

My mother claimed that I wrote my first play when I was six years old. I think that might be a bit far-fetched, but I have been a script writer my whole life up until now.

Writing is kind of a compulsion for me. I get high off it. There’s definitely a process I’ve developed over the years and when I jumped to novel writing, that process became very important. Writing a script is like doing a Cross Fit competition, but writing a novel is like running a marathon. Both take discipline and preparation. I think writing a novel, for me, requires a lot of prep work. Once I do that prep, then the writing just flows.

Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each character all the way through to the page?

I think my main characters develop organically when I first start thinking about a plot. Then as I outline it further, other characters pop in. Once I kind of have a general idea of who each one is, then I start visualizing them more.

I use Trello to organize my thoughts, and one of my lists contains just characters. I’ll find an actor who I think looks like my character and throw a photo of them into that character’s card. Then I write down adjectives to describe them and fill in their history. From that I will often create an illustrated character sketch using the paint tools in Photoshop. You can find the Beckett Coven sketches on my website.

It’s also important to assign each of them a secret. What are they hiding from other people and what are they hiding from themselves? For a series, I think that should change a bit for each book. Maybe they shared a secret already, but a change in events, created a new secret. Or maybe they never resolved a secret within themselves. Or they are worried about a secret someone else may be hiding.

Do you people watch to help with character(s) development? Or do you build upon your characters during story creation?

I think as a writer we should always be looking at everyone around us. Not copying them as a character but taking little bits of them and storing it for later. Character creation can be weird sometimes. I think almost every writer talks about their characters taking control at times. Sometimes I feel like they are telling me what to do as opposed to me making them do things.

One of my characters for the Beckett Coven series was originally written as a white woman, but as I developed her further, Finlay Williams made it very clear that she wanted to be a Black woman from Savannah and a former Wiccan High Priestess. And I was not about to argue with her.

Some of the characters I created for this series are my actual ancestors. My tenth great-grandparents, John and Mary Ingersoll, are a great example. I originally wrote their marriage as being strained and unhappy. They let me know in no uncertain terms that I was getting that wrong. An unexpected article I found made me realize that theirs was probably a strong and happy relationship. A lot of effort was taken to make sure that Puritan couples were a good match for one another. They typically didn’t marry until they were in their mid-twenties. Men had to establish themselves and build (or inherit) their own home before they could find a life partner. Once the couple decided to consider marriage, the young man actually spent the night with the young woman. A board was placed between them in the bed. Parents kept a bit of a watchful eye, but the whole point was to give the couple privacy so they could talk and make sure they were a good fit. It totally reshaped my view of Puritan households and marriages. So, I took the hint and rewrote them. John and Mary are so much more interesting now. Their relationship is complex. They perform a complicated dance of compromises, even in difficult moments, as opposed to the flat and angry biases I had initially thrown at them.

Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character(s)? If so, which one(s)?

Oh my gosh, that’s a hard question. I feel like I’m so bonded with all of them now after spending three books with them. But I’m probably most bonded with my ancestors and Bridget Bishop. Bridget was the first woman executed during the Salem Witch Trials. She was innocent of the charges against her, as were the other accused persons. Most likely she was the victim of a judge who simply didn’t like her.

Bridget is the soul of this book series, and it has been very important that I breathe life into her story. I feel so often she and the others get reduced to being a name on a memorial. Bridget’s story gets frozen in time at the worst moment of her life. The written testimonies during her trial are just a bunch of tall tales and nasty rumors about her. I wanted to find the real Bridget behind all of that because I know she was so much more.

From her questioning on April 19th, 1692, the only time we get to hear her voice, you can tell she was probably very smart, charming, and witty. She liked to bargain, which wasn’t very socially acceptable among the Puritans. She also didn’t suffer fools lightly. If you were talking behind her back she would walk right up to you and confront you about it. When her second husband beat her, she beat him right back.

Bridget was a bit of a fashionista, too. She liked wearing expensive fabrics and would add bits of colored cloth to make them even more interesting. Again, not something the Puritans found endearing.

I think it’s hard for me not to sympathize with Bridget, since I’m certain if I was in Salem in 1692 I probably would have been targeted as well.

Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details? Right now, I’m all in on the Beckett Coven series. The first book Whispers of the Pale Witch comes out this September. The second book Lies of the Bishop Stone comes out in 2027. I just got the synopsis of the third book to my publisher, so we will announce its title and publishing date very soon. The series will complete after the third book, but I may find some ways to tell spin-off stories. Other than that, I’d like to work on a speculative historical fiction focusing on my Ingersoll ancestors, but without the fictional witchy stuff. I think it would be interesting to examine their lives through three generations of women.

What are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year?

After Whispers comes out, I need to focus on the edits for Lies. Then I need to get cranking on the final book. It needs some rewrites before we can start the editing process. If Whispers does well, I also want to do an audio book of it. I have a really great narrator in mind, so hopefully we can make that happen.

by Kat Huddleston
Date of Publication: October 5th 2026

BLURB
Who Knew Immortality Could Be So Short?

When high school history teacher Max Maguire begins to suspect one of his brightest students is in trouble, he ends up walking down the wrong alley. Suddenly, he's staring down the fangs of a beautiful, powerful, and utterly merciless vampire named Jade.

As Max's life takes a dark turn, he’s forced to learn how to survive in Jade's twisted world. But if Jade thinks her hostage is going to play nice, she really should have read his resume. This former Special Forces sniper might just have to dust off some very lethal muscle memory.

While Max plots exactly how to kill the most dangerous predator on the planet, he discovers there’s another group of vampires that have their own plans for Jade. Before he knows it, Max is caught in the crosshairs of a vampire war that neither side can afford to lose.

And there's one thing neither side knows... Max has a secret of his own.

CONTENT WARNING: This is NOT a romance. The novel contains mature content intended for readers 18 and older. This is a gritty, fast-paced genre hybrid combining vampires with dark urban fantasy, tactical military thriller action, and sarcastic humor, with a wisecracking protagonist at its center. There is explicit sexual material, including non-consensual sex, graphic violence, torture, adult themes, and visceral horror elements. In other words, my vampires don't sparkle.

Excerpt from Dead Man’s Trigger

Max Maguire thought vampires were the stuff of horror movies and campfire stories. Then he was turned into one. Now he’s trapped by Jade, a beautiful and terrifying vampire who is trying to turn him into a monster. Max is discovering that being a vampire isn’t anything like the legends and that Jade will stop at nothing to break him.

He found himself falling into thoughts of the past as melancholy memories washed over him. His family, his friends, the kids at school, Crystal’s loss of a normal life, it all took hold of him while the hunger began to pound through him. The hunger that would only be satisfied at the cost of another life.

Max studied the kitchen door. Presumably it led outdoors. At least that was implied by the fake light coming through the fake window in the door. What would happen if he just opened the door and took a walk in the sun? Would the sun set him on fire or turn him into dust in an instant?

He could feel the sun just outside the door. Waiting for him. Waiting to embrace him and end the insanity. Or maybe it was all an elaborate joke. Maybe his buddies were waiting for him on the other side of the door, waiting for a big laugh at how they got him with the biggest practical joke in the history of the world. That had to be it. Vampires couldn’t really exist. Max ran his tongue over his fangs. Nope. Vampires couldn’t possibly exist.

Max felt her. Jade was standing only a few feet from him. She seemed positively overdressed in her T-shirt and jeans. The clothes didn’t quite look right on her. She looked so much better naked.

“Curious about the sun?” she asked.

“It’s not the sun. It’s just a lighting fixture that simulates the sun.”

“But the sun rests right outside this door.” Jade walked up to the door and pressed her body against it. “Can’t you feel it?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want to walk out into it?” she asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

Jade turned around to face him and leaned against the door.

“It’d be so much easier, wouldn’t it?”

“Absolutely.”

She smiled easily at him. “Can I show you something?”

Max laughed. “Yet another offer I can’t refuse.”

Jade walked past him and then turned back and held out her hand. Max got up and put his hand in hers. She glanced back at him with such a magnificent smile, a lover promising sweet and loving things. He wanted to forget about the evil buried beneath her surface.

She led him to the foyer, with its grand stairway. She pulled him into an embrace and he looked down into her eyes. Max held her around the waist and he couldn’t have refused her anything at that moment. She reached up and ran her fingers through his hair. Jade kissed him so tenderly and softly, he didn’t want the kiss to stop. Ever. But she pulled away and wistfully went to the big window.

Max knew this was the only window in the house that was real. A steel covering was lowered from some hidden place in the wall each morning before sunrise. For the first time, Max noticed that one tiny sliver of light escaped through the side of the covering. It was about half an inch around and the beam was strong, as if the sun was in just the right position to give it its maximum strength.

The beam was between Max and Jade.

“Jade, what...” he started.

She slowly shook her head and put her finger up to her lips signaling him to be silent.

She held her hand out and waited for Max to take it. Now Max understood. It was another lesson. Max smiled and took her hand. Jade let the light slide over her hand as she pulled Max’s hand toward it. She stopped and held her hand steady in the beam with Max’s hand less than an inch away from the light. He’d almost expected her hand to burst out into flames, but there was no change in the appearance of the skin or sign that she was suffering any kind of discomfort.

However, somehow Max knew when she began to tug on his hand he was going to have a different reaction to the tiny spot of sunlight. As his hand entered the light, he instantly felt a burning sensation. He flinched, trying to pull his hand away, but she held onto him keeping his hand steady. Finally, she stopped. The beam immediately began burning through his forearm like acid. Max felt the flesh begin to burn and burst into flames catching his shirt on fire. Teeth clenched, Max refused to scream as the fire danced over his skin.

He let his mind go someplace, as he’d learned all those years ago to do. It was Japan this time during the 1600s when peace was established under the Tokugawa shoguns after constant warfare. The pain ripped through his arm, but he held on to the shoguns. He wasn’t going to give in.

Max knew when some evil son of a bitch wanted to hurt you, you just couldn’t let them win. He unclenched his teeth and let his eyes bore into hers.

Kat is an award-winning painter and fused glass artist who taught fused glass, and her art can be found in several galleries.

While Kat has mostly lived in a fantasy land, she’s made a living as a journalist and dabbled in short story and screenplay writing.

Dead Man’s Trigger is Kat’s first novel in the Max Maguire Vampire series.

Kat lives with her two helper cats, Jax and Nicky.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with . . . Kat Huddleston . . .

How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?

I have a degree in Journalism from Northern Illinois University and I wrote for the Syfy Channel’s website and for Sci Fi Magazine as an entertainment journalist for a couple decades. My writing style is pretty straight forward and accessible. I like to combine dark supernatural action with humor, build strong character relationships and focus on emotionally direct storytelling. I also often write from a male protagonist’s POV. I don’t know why, it just seems natural to me.

Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?

Dead Man’s Trigger: A Max Maguire Vampire Novel is book 1 in the series. I’m working on Book 2, which is Kill Radius, and that will open up Max’s story even more. I also have an outline of Book 3, Terminal Eclipse. Beyond the Max Maguire Vampire series, I’m putting together a non-fiction book about my book publishing journey called 30 Days or Die! How Not to Fall off the Amazon Cliff. And I have another book series in the works called The Jake Casper Supernatural Mysteries. So there’s a bunch of projects in the works.

What are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year?

This year, I’d like to find a narrator for Dead Man’s Trigger for an audio book. And also get a good draft on the non-fiction book. By this time next year, I’m hoping to have book 2 published.

If you could spend one-week with 5 fictional characters, who would they be and where would you spend that time?

I’ve been reading all The Dresden Files and the Joe Ledger series of books. So Harry Dresden and Joe Ledger, although I suspect the entire week would be end of the world action stuff, so it’d be pretty exciting and scary. I think early Anita Blake would be fascinating, as well as Sookie Stackhouse. And I think Lestat from Interview with a Vampire. And wouldn’t Buffy the Vampire Slayer be fun too. They’re all pretty much trouble magnets so it would be a busy week.

If you could go ANYWhere, money is not a concern, and spend one full year. Where would you go and what would you do with this time? Outer Space. I’m a scifi girl. I’d like to travel to distant planets and hang out with the Firefly crew as they got into trouble. So add Captain Malcolm Reynolds and the crew to the fictional characters above.

Excerpts

A Warrior’s Kiss, Collection Story #1 in the novella collection:
 (Nicky and Zeke’s First Meet)

“Think he’s dead?” The whispered question quieted his internal whining.
Nice voice. Soft and smooth, like velvet. Feminine. Clearly, he wasn’t alone.
“He sure looks dead.” A second woman replied, louder and with a chuckle.
He suppressed a scowl and kept his eyes closed. She thinks this is funny?
Bodies shifted behind whatever his head had cracked into, edging closer to either side of him.
“There’s no blood, though,” she of the velvet voice murmured. “Shouldn’t there be blood? […].”
She came to a halt near his head, her body heat and peaches-and-honey scent saturating his senses. He should open his peepers and say something, see if the female looked as good as she sounded and smelled.
Shit. Where had that reaction come from? He had no room in his life for a woman, especially not a mortal woman.
“Maybe we should check for a pulse,” the one Peaches had called Maya suggested.
“I’m not touching his body.”
Fast reply from Peaches. Jesus, did he look so horrible? And double Jesus, why did her opinion matter? He must have hit his head harder than he imagined.
======
A Demon’s Embrace, Collection Story #2
(Stryker and Zara's Slow Burn)
Location: Charon's boat, River Styx, the Underworld...

The boat heaved upward as if struck from below, sending her airborne. Before she could conjure her wings, Stryker shot up and snatched her around the waist, hauling them both to the deck.
Flat on his back with her sprawled atop his hard body, he grinned, much too pleased with himself for her liking. “Told you it gets rough,” he shouted over the rush of water. “I never lie to you, Angel Face.”
“That in itself is a lie,” she shot back, wedging her fingers in the gaps between the bone flooring and gripping tight while the chopping river tossed their ride.
He laughed but the sound was lost in the great roar of the river.
“Buckle up, baby.” Stryker held her tight to his chest. The boat bucked upward and bashed down, again and again. Freezing water sprayed everywhere, drenching them in seconds.
Cheek to cheek, Stryker clutched her close with a hand cupping her head and one massive arm banded around her torso. “Hang on Angel Cake, I’ve got you.” Warmth slid into her quivering body, a soothing heat wafting from the demon. “Nice trick, right?” he murmured into her ear, lips grazing her skin.
Teeth chattering, she didn’t reply, too caught up in the sensation of his surprisingly soft lips on the shell of her ear.
Desire danced through her, followed fast by denial. No. Please, no. Eternal enemy. Archnemesis. But her treacherous body relaxed against his.
“Yes, baby. That’s it.” His hand slid to her nape, and he exhaled against the sensitive skin of her neck, setting off a flurry of butterflies in her stomach.
Nothing good could come of a tryst with a demon. It didn’t matter how loudly the hum chimed in her, or how wonderful his hard body felt under hers, they couldn’t possibly—
Oh, no, now his clever fingers kneaded the knots in her muscles, massaging the tension from her neck and shoulders, making her melt.
His warm lips brushed her ear once again. “Angel…”
Lord help her, she wanted him.

An Angel’s Obsession, story #3
(Luke and Elle’s First Re-meet)

Luke was cannon-balled out of slumber by the sudden presence of one hundred-and-fifty pounds of hound landing on his back.
Facedown atop a supremely soft mattress with his arms stretched wide and his head hanging off the foot of the bed, it took him a second to rally his speech center. “What the actual bloody hell, Bolt?”
Bolt ignored him, bouncing around Luke’s body, pitching him side to side, up, down, up, down.
“For feck’s sake.” What the double bloody hell was Bolt on about with all the yapping and yipping and bashing of Luke’s kidneys with his big paws?
Luke rolled onto his back. “Enough, Bolt. Sit.”
Bolt whined and smacked one large paw down upon Luke’s bare chest. Ouch. “Duuude,” he drawled. “Chill.”
Fingers snapped, silencing his dog lickety-split.
Who possessed the ability to boss his animal around and convince the stubborn bugger to obey?
Only one person in any dimension wielded this kind of puppy power. But no, it can’t be her.
With his heartbeat jackhammering in his chest, he sucked in a deep breath, soaking in the unique floral scent of the woman who broke his rarely used heart, hoping this was no mere post-party hallucination.
“Gabrielle,” he whispered. God’s messenger and elite warrior, the angel he’d admired and cherished. “Elle.” The woman he’d let down, and who ultimately walked away.
A grin spread over his face.
“Angel baby. You’re here.” He cranked open his eyelids to gaze up at her in wonder.
Lightning crackled in the depths of her glittering green eyes as she loomed over him, her unhappy expression promising pain. Yep, his angel was clearly not as thrilled as he was about this unexpected reunion.
A snarl escaped his angel’s throat, and her arm shot downward, her fingers of steel snagging him by the throat and squeezing his windpipe.
“Luke.” She uttered his name as if it were the vilest curse word in any dimension, then lifted him with little effort and slammed him up against the wall…

================
An Angel’s Treasure, Story #4
(Raz and Maya in the Friend Zone)

Maya smacked into a wall of muscle.
“Raz!” She palmed his hunky chest and pushed.
He didn’t budge. Instead, he covered her hands with his much larger ones, trapping them against his pecs while he backed her against the fridge.

“Move.” Wow, that order came out more like a question, and good grief, could her voice sound any wispier? All breathy and needy? But damn it, touching him was doing all sorts of lusty things to her insides, again, and they were not in the right place or time to be—
Wait. Hold the horniness. There was never a right time for them. Friends. Friend Zone. The platonic zone.
Raz towered over her, his pretty eyes practically searing into her soul. “Hey, you all right?” His warm, warm fingers stroked the backs of her hands while the cold metal of the fridge sent goosies down her spine.
“I’ll be fine.” She yanked her hands out from under his and attempted to skirt around him, but he planted his stupid big hands against the fridge on either side of her, towering over her, caging her in.
Damn it, he smelled so good, like clove, pine, and citrus. “I need to check on the cookies.”
“No, you don’t. You just put in that batch.”
“Again, I ask, what do you know about baking? Zip, that’s what.”
“As much as I enjoy our banter, TT, something is up, and we’re not moving until you tell me.”
His expression softened. “Let me help.”
“I’m not some problem you need to fix.” She ducked under his arm. This time, he let her go, much to her relief. And to no small amount of disappointment.
She busied herself arranging the cooled batch of cookies on a platter.
“Maya.”
Oh, man. He said her actual name instead of one of the bazillion nicknames he seemed to have for her. She nibbled on the side of her lip and tore her gaze off the cookie pile to face the source of her never-ending torment.
Brow furrowed, he stared down at her, concern clear in his eyes. They always darkened to forest green when he was upset, which was a rare occurrence for the upbeat, positive man. Except when he was in battle mode, like the time a bunch of creatures from Hell invaded Petaluma, and Raziel made his fiery sword appear out of nowhere then killed every scary monster that tried to attack her—
Raz tapped her forehead with his index finger. “You’re thinking very hard. Too hard for a party. What’s going on in that clever mind of yours?”
“Nothing.”
“Mm-hm.” He scanned her face. “You have a little something on your…” His gaze locked onto her cheek, and before she could so much as blink, he stroked his thumb over her skin, right near her lips.
Lips that wanted to be kissed sooooo damn badly. By him.
Shit. She grabbed his wrist and opened her mouth to lay into him as hard as her bantering skills would allow, to stop herself before she snaked her hands around his neck and tugged his face closer to hers to kiss—
Chimes trilled.
The air around them warmed.
Fireworks burst to life near the vaulted ceiling, and a scroll winked into existence in an explosion of pink and gold sparkles.

Holy sugar sprinkles. The cupids had crashed the party.

When not glued to her laptop, Celia likes to work out, read books (of course!), hang with her family, and binge-watch sci-fi and fantasy TV shows and movies. Matcha lattes keep her fueled for All The Life Stuff!

BLURB
A gothic horror story about losing the love of your life, So Beats a Hollow Heart follows a nameless assassin—a member of the feared Bloodcloaks—sent to rid a village of the necromancer who has been stealing its young women.

What the assassin finds is not the monster she expects, but a woman deep in grief, desperate to find a new body for the soul of her dead lover.

After her third experiment ends in failure, the necromancer—Isolde—turns her attention to the assassin. Neither woman can anticipate how profoundly they will be changed by Isolde’s fourth and final experiment.

So Beats A Hollow Heart is the winner of the Cover Story Writing Contest, hosted by Nicole Frail Books, LLC

Excerpt:
I remembered the pain of transformation, if only as a haze of red and tearing muscle. I remembered the awful rasp of my canines being filed blunt and the burn of silver being placed over the stumps to keep my true nature at bay. I had gone through hell so that girls like this wouldn’t have to, and now I was failing her.
Isolde walked into my field of vision, blocking my view of the tortured girl and breaking me out of my spiral of self-pity; I folded up the memories and tucked them away with the others, shifting my focus to the present. Isolde’s arms were crossed, the tip of one boot tapping against the flagstones.
“This is very impressive. Look more impressed,” she demanded.
“Can I look horrified instead?”
Isolde huffed, childlike and thwarted.
“I suppose that will do,” she said. “You know, I was really counting on you to be more entertaining than George. Do they surgically remove your personalities when they pump you full of wolf’s blood?”
“I don’t know. Do they surgically remove your morals when you sign the Mage Registry?”
“Ha! I’ll have you know that several of my colleagues are terrible sticks in the mud and would take great offence at the suggestion. I’m quite certain they will stay within the bounds of safe magic use and never go even a little bit mad.”
“And you?” I ventured. “Have you gone a little bit mad?”
“Of course you would see brilliance and call it madness. If I do go mad, it’s because I have no one but a zombie to talk to. And George, I suppose.”
She smiled, just a little quirk of her mouth at one side as if the two of us were sharing a joke. I had never imagined that I would be gently needled by a target. I did not like it.
I would not say that I sulked. I had simply elected to end the conversation. It was in Isolde’s interest to keep me talking, I reminded myself: if I was talking, I was not thinking, was not planning. I needed to do both if I wanted to get myself and the girl to safety. I could come back for Isolde later. Or someone else could.
The problem was that, devoid of entertainment, Isolde had taken to scratching the bottom of a glass beaker with a scalpel. Her work was precise, careful, but the sound of sharp metal against glass scraped at my ears, interrupting all attempts at thought. I glared at her.
This was a mistake.
“I’m sure you must be wondering what I’m doing,” said Isolde, without looking up.
“Not particularly.”
“I’m engraving the soul-binding runes into the base of this bottle.” She paused. “Aren’t you going to ask me why?”
“No.”
She was going to tell me anyway.
“I am engraving the soul-binding runes into the base of this bottle,” Isolde repeated, her voice heavy and her words overenunciated as if my disinterest was an obstacle she could overcome by sheer force. “So that I can recapture the soul, should the experiment fail.”

Author Info
B. M. Briar spent most of her childhood in fantasyland, whether that be immersed in a book or forcing her long-suffering dad to play pretend for entire weekends at a time. Little has changed over the past two decades, except that she’s given her dad a break and taken up DnD instead.

Her work reflects her own experiences as a queer woman, is increasingly gothic, and always a little bit magic. She is the winner of the first Cover Story contest from Attic Books. So Beats A Hollow Heart is her debut novella.

Outside of writing, she is a cat mum, a cross-stitcher, and a truly abysmal pole dancer.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with . . . B. M. Briar . . .

LIGHTNING ROUND

What genre do you read?

I’m not completely wedded to one genre. Mostly I read fantasy and horror, with a smattering of sci fi, romance, crime and lit fic.

What genre do you write?

With writing I stick mostly to fantasy, horror, and romance, although I have been known to pen a sci-fi short. In any case, it’s going to have a gothic vibe.

What was the first book you fell in love with?

This is such a hard question! But I adored the Mr Majeika series by Humphrey Carpenter as a child—they really sparked my imagination.

What was a book you said you would never pick up again?

As huge of an influence as it was on my childhood, I’ll never pick up Harry Potter again. As a member of the queer community I can’t lose myself in that world when its author has poured so much of her wealth into harming my trans siblings.

Which fiction character do you love?

Ah! So many to choose from! I wrote my undergraduate dissertation on Brienne of Tarth from A Song of Ice and Fire, and she’ll always be in my heart. More recently I’ve been super into The Locked Tomb series and I’m batting my eyelashes at Pyrrha Dve.

Which fiction character do you love to hate?

That’s got to be Littlefinger from A Song of Ice and Fire.

Which fiction character do you hate?

I think for me to genuinely hate a character (rather than love to hate) they have to be neither compelling nor appealing. So dare I say almost every male character in ACOTAR?

What beverage do you drink while reading?

Love a little iced coffee/strawberry matcha/bubble tea. I’ve learned to make all of them at home for the sake of my bank account!

What do you snack on while reading?

Dried mango—the good kind from the Asian grocery.

Have you always enjoyed reading?

Yes! I learned to read when I was three, so I’ve had my nose in a book for as long as I (or anyone else) can remember.
