Excerpt
As he drove up and pulled into his spot he noticed Nene getting out of her car with two arms full of groceries.  Doug parked his car, and quickly got out to help.

“Hey Nene, do you need some help?”

“Heeyyy Doug, of course I could use a hand,” she replied as he grabbed a bag that was slipping out her hand.  “Thanks so much!  These groceries are a mess, but I gotta feed these kids.  And while I’m here gettin’ these groceries, the kids ain’t never around to help!” As she chuckled, Doug nodded.  He’d passed Nene a few days back and met her briefly, but this was their first real interaction.

“Yeah, that’s the thing about kids, I get that.  But you gotta be glad you had ‘em right?”

“Well I guess Doug, I have second thoughts from time to time,” she said as she laughed again.

“Hey Doug, I noticed you working on that house next door, and was wondering are you fixing it up, or are you moving in?”  They both gathered their grip on their respective groceries and paused.  Doug shifted around a bit.

“Uh...well, you know Nene, since you like asked and all, I’m pretty much doing both.  I bought the property, and it needed a bit of work so I’m working on it too.”

“Ohhh, ok, ok Dougie, I see you, I see you.  Well since I got this moment with you, if you don’t mind me askin’ and all,” she started while looking up at him, “what you going to do with all that space? I’ve been here seven years, and all these houses are the same.  They’re all three bedrooms.  And from what I’ve noticed, it don’t seem like you have any family.  Am I correct in that?”  She motioned her torso in a shy but sultry fashion.  Doug felt slightly warm; the sun was out, but that was not the origin of his temperature rise.  He looked her up and down faintly, and noticed her nicely painted toes poking out from her sandals, her shape, void of hips, but trim waistline, her full bosom, and long pink nails contrasting her beautiful dark skin.  Doug glanced deeply at her face, and focused on her provocative brown eyes.

“Well Nene,” he stuttered, “since you asked, I’m sing–...I mean I have two girls.  And yeah, I’m single, I mean I’m a single dad,” he replied, mopping his answer up at the end.

“OK!” she exclaimed, making space and walking toward the door.  “I wasn’t trying to get all in your business, but we’re neighbors you know.  So I just wanted to let you know, if you ever needed a cup of sugar or some flour or something like that, I’m here.  Right next door, I’m your neighbor.”  Doug helped her to the door, and handed her the load of groceries he held.

“I got you Nene, I got you.  But let me ask you something?”  She nodded in acceptance to his question.  “How do you know I can cook?”  She smiled and gazed at him.

“Well, any man who is single, appears to be responsible, is a homeowner, and has a smile like yours…I’m just betting you can.  Sooo, if you need a little sugar to make something sweet, I’m the neighbor lady you should call on.  I’m only a few feet away.”

“Ok,” Doug replied, smiling at her, “If I’m ever in need of some sugar, you’ll be the first neighbor I’ll call.”  Doug backed off her doorstep and started to walk away.  He looked back to see Nene gripping her finger in her mouth eyeing him. She quickly waved, and Doug waved back, smiling.

Single dad…single, I’m single, thought Doug as he walked the pathway to his house.  I’m single, I don’t need permission to talk to my neighbors.  I’m single.  No one will say anything about how you handle your life; you don’t have a woman right now.  You’re single.  Be ok with that.

Author Info
JM Scarlet is a burgeoning talent in the literary world, making her mark with captivating Urban Fiction and Erotica tales. With her debut book, "Unbalanced Ph," slated for release early this summer, Scarlet is poised to enthrall readers with her provocative storytelling.

Despite being a newcomer to the industry, Scarlet's passion for crafting compelling narratives shines through in her work. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant energy of urban life and the complexities of human desire, she weaves tales that resonate deeply with readers.

Beyond her writing endeavors, Scarlet is known for her affinity for cats and an appreciation for all things sexy. However, she remains steadfast in her belief that the story itself is paramount, striving to create narratives that captivate and inspire.

As she embarks on her journey as an author, JM Scarlet invites readers to join her in exploring the rich tapestry of human experience through the lens of passion, intrigue, and unbridled desire.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with . . . J.M. Scarlet . . .

How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?

I would describe my writing style as a provocative fusion of urban fiction and erotica, characterized by a raw authenticity that explores the intricacies of human relationships and desires. Through vivid and evocative prose, I immerse readers in a world of passion, longing, and self-discovery. My aim is to challenge conventional boundaries and provoke thought, while captivating readers with compelling characters and steamy encounters. Whether I'm exploring themes of love, loss, or redemption, my writing is unapologetically bold and honest, offering readers a glimpse into the raw intensity of the human experience.

Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each character all the way through to the page?

Absolutely I take my characters prep to heart!  How couldn’t I?  I really toiled over how they would respond to situations. I wrote several different versions of the way they responded to circumstances.  In the end, I think they took their own shape, and in many ways spoke to me and told me what was authentic to them.  I think growth for a character is really like a dance.  Sometimes it is two steps forward, other times, it’s two steps back.  Like a parent you can nurture all the growth in a child, but that child sometimes takes a while to really grow.  That’s why I really enjoyed writing this novella because these characters are not done growing.

Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?

I am toying around with an idea for a sequel to this book.  Because this book focuses on  the main character Doug, I was happy with his story.  However the other two characters, Nene and PJ are so central, I want to explore them as well.  I believe there is a community of people and stories in this novella I’ve created. As this is my first time writing I wanted to get this done.  You can’t have a sequel if you never finish the first one right?  In saying that I know these other characters have stories in them; more than being a mom, or an artist, these characters are people, I want to dive into them, and uncover their story.

Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character(s)? If so, which one(s)?

I think I really bonded with the main character, Doug.  This was because Doug was a bit of a compilation character.  He’s a bit of my co-worker, who’s a single dad, and he’s a bit of what little I know about my real father.  Also he’s a big chunk of my imagination.  Like I said, I’ve never written anything, and I never knew my father, so I bonded a lot with Doug.  He was hard to create, and he’s got his flaws, but I think that’s what drew me to him. He’s not perfect, but he’s doing his best, and sometimes that is just not enough for people–unfortunately.

What are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year?

Well this year has already been a whirlwind! I think once May 1st comes around and my book is actually available on Amazon, one of my big goals will be completed.  I want to enjoy whatever success or non-success this book has! But for the remainder of the year, I really want to see if anything creatively comes from either Nene or PJ. Those are my girls, and I do want to take care of them, but I have to figure out if they’re bold enough for the spotlight!

Have you ever felt that there was something inside of you that you couldn’t control? If so, what? If not, what spurs you to reach for the inexperienced?

The thing I can’t control is my urge to take on a challenge.  If you want to see me do some silly or stupid things, challenge me.  There has yet to be a challenge I’ve said no to. In highschool my gym teacher challenged me to go out for volleyball, make the team, and complete the season.  By the end of the season I was one of the best players, and the teacher had to take the whole team out for pizza! I don’t mind losing, I don’t mind failing at something, but not taking that chance is something I can NOT do!  It’s like writing this book, I had a friend challenge me to write and publish a book.  It was a challenge, of course I had to step up and step out!

Thank you J.M. Scarlet for joining and giving a little insight to you and your process. Your work is appreciated.

SPOTLIGHT - EROTICA - THE MURDER OF CROWS (Crooked Halos, #3) by KC Bear

"We're definitely not good, but we ain't all bad, either"

The Murder of Crows

Crooked Halos, #3

by KC Bear

Genre: Erotic Romance

Mercy

Eight years ago, he promised he'd be back for me. He promised he'd take care of me. But he lied. And I was left to pick up my own shattered pieces.

Then, all of a sudden, he was back. I hated that he looked so good, that his endless and insistent need to fix me made it harder to hate him. No, somewhere in there, while we made a family all our own and he showed off his Daddy colors, my innocent childhood crush on him turned into love.

Jensen

I told her I'd be back for her. It took me eight years, and when I did find her again, she was pissed at me. She had every right to be, sure, but nothing she said or did would keep me away or run me off again. I had lots of hurts to apologize for and issues to help heal.
So, I vowed to heal her. With laughter, forgiveness, trust, a new family --- and orgasms. What I hadn't planned on doing was falling in love with her.

The Murder of Crows is a novel of about 70K words. It is the continuation, and conclusion, of Mercy and Jensen's story from Merry Christmas, Soldier (but can be read as a standalone). There are triggers, listed in the front of the book, or you may contact the author. It's not intended for anyone younger than 18 years of age. It ends with a Happily Ever After.

Amazon * Bookbub * Goodreads

Happy Valentine’s, Biker

Crooked Halos, #2

He's a maverick, rough and ready.

She's sweet, scared and desperate with an underlying fire.

When they meet, is it one night?
Or is she his light?

Psycho
I had one job, and I did it. Kick ass and take names, just like always. I was beyond exhausted, ready to fall into bed and call it a night. Then, I saw her.

Every bit of darkness within me wanted her, and not even the abuse she'd been through that night with her scumbag boyfriend would stop me from getting her.

I'd found my prey, my Sunshine, and nothing would stop me from claiming what was mine.
Not even her.

Happy Valentine's, Biker is a prequel novella under 15K words and is book 1.5 in the Crooked Halos series. It's not intended for readers under 18 years of age or with certain triggers (see author for details).

Amazon * Bookbub * Goodreads

Merry Christmas, Soldier

Crooked Halos, #1

Merry Christmas, Soldier is an 11K novella written in first person past tense. It is a taboo romance with an 18 year age gap between them; all characters are of legal, consenting age.

Jensen is in the military, and Mercy was born premature; if any of that might possibly be a trigger, proceed with caution.

It is a prequel, which means there's more to the story --- and yes, it ends on a cliffhanger...

There is cussing, slight kink, and sexual situations. Again, proceed with caution.

This is not intended for anyone under the age of 18.

Little bit sweet, whole lotta naughty, always HEA

KC Bear has been writing as a hobby her entire life and one day decided to give the voices in her head life of their own.

While she does only have a few little book babies out, she's got more ideas than she can count! With ideas for stories ranging from romance that blurs the line into erotica, women who love other women, supernatural romance, and everything in between, she's sure you'll find something to enjoy as soon as she gets it put out into the world!

As a proud submissive, BDSM plays heavily into her novels with darker themes of sadomasochism, unconventional relationships with menages, and cursing that could make a sailor blush; but you can be sure they're all a little bit sweet, whole lotta naughty, and always have a HEA.

When she isn't writing or creating entire worlds in her head, she spends her days in Kentucky on their 10 acres with her very own Dominant and Pandora, the spoiled cat.

DECK THE HALLS WITH BOOKS HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA - BOSS LEVEL by Allyson Lindt

Holiday Lemon Cream Cheese Chocolate Chip Cookies

Christmas is getting close, and it’s always been one of my favorite holidays. I love picking the perfect gift for the people I care about and then seeing their faces when they open it. In my younger, less anti-social (or rather, less filled with work during normal hours) days, I could wander the malls forever (back when we had more malls here. And not really forever, but for a while). I love the lights, the people, the sounds, the smells…

And the cooking. I get all kinds of domestic for Christmas. Or at least, a little. I like making sweets. The years have taught me that working with a bunch of guys (is it possible I pull story ideas from previous jobs? I’ll never tell
😉), a lot of them single, means that food makes great gifts for my coworkers.

One year, two of my best friends at work were single guys. I found this cookie recipe and pretty much tried it out on them disguised as a Christmas gift. It went over so well that I’ve made it my go-to every year. I think the response was something like ‘next time you get bored, if you wanted to make these again…’. Making these will occupy my kitchen this weekend, at least for a little bit, because fortunately they’re really quick and easy to make.

Lemon Cream Cheese Holiday Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 3oz package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 teaspoon lemon extract (you can substitute any kind of extract here. I’ve used cherry and orange as well. Sharper flavors stand out better)
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup mini m&m’s
  • Red and green food color (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (176 c), grease 2 baking sheets
  2. Beat together cream cheese and butter at medium speed
  3. Beat in sugar, milk, and lemon (or other extract)
  4. (optional) split mixture into two bowls. Add 2 drops of red food color to one, and 2 drops of green to the other. Divide flour into two equal parts.
  5. Beat in flour, 1/4 cup at a time until blended.
  6. Stir in chocolate chips and M and M’s

  • Drop rounded tablespoonfuls onto greased baking sheets, 2 inches apart.
  • Using a spoon, flatten each cookie slightly
  • Bake cookies for about 10 minutes, until set and golden.

It’s lonely at the top.

I knew it would be when I clawed my way up here, trading away favors and any personal life to get to where I am today, the head of the hottest new video game company in the industry.

When an old friend calls in one of those favors, I’m happy to help Xander out. His partner, Dominic, needs to impress some conservative clients, and showing up to get-to-know-you dinners with a heavily tattooed man on his arm isn’t the way to do it.

And there are far worse things in the world than pretending to be Dom’s fiancée.

When the fake kisses with Dominic start to feel real, I realize there’s something missing in my life. Worse, I’m starting to realize I never should’ve let Xander get away.

But the three of us together will bring everything we’ve worked for toppling down around us. There’s no way love is worth that kind of sacrifice.

EXCERPT:

He stumbled to the door, eyeing Nikki through the crack as he unlatched the chain. Her eyes swept up his body, arousal tinging the air. Woman was in permanent heat, though given her age, that wasn’t surprising. Around thirty shifter women got desperate to breed, but Jesus, he didn’t want that stank in his room. He blocked her entry.

“I’m sorry, okay?” She glanced away as a door opened and shut farther down the hall. “Do we have to do this out here?”

“Yeah.”

She huffed her bangs from her eyes. Her brow furrowed, walking her fingers up his abs to the ink below his right pec and tracing the line of script. “When’d you get this one?”

—growling—

“Don’t fucking touch me. If you’ve got something to say, say it.”

Her hand fell. “Look, you’re right. I was out of line down there. Disrespected you. Made you lose face in front of the club. I was just… it’s different for the women here. Harder.”

—bullshit—

“Might be easier if you minded your place and stop pissing the ol’ ladies off.”

The rage that flashed over her face proved his cat right. This was damage control, her trying to manipulate his emotions and suck him back into her lies. He snorted, and she blinked at him, crocodile innocent again.

“We had a deal, Nikki. But all the shit you’ve been pulling is making that null and void. I’m not the only one with a past. I gave you my word, but keep it up, and I’ll have nothing to lose handing your ass over to Hellspawn.”

Her eyes narrowed at the mention of the MC down south she’d run riot through before landing here. “You wouldn’t.”

“Keep pushing and find out.”

We’re wrapping up a phone call with our father, who’s out of town, when we pull up to his house. He’s on speaker phone so we can all hear.

“Carolyn told me not to ask you, but I could never forgive myself if something happened to her daughter. Make sure Esme gets settled in, and if you don’t mind staying for the week before she heads back to school, that would be even better.”

Great, the child prodigy genius who has a higher IQ than me and my three brothers combined will love being checked on. I’m sure our presence will go over like a lead balloon.

Maybe she’s one of those all brains and no common sense types.

But we owe the affluent lives we’ve been brought up in, our jobs in the Bratva, and basically everything to our father. So if it will put his mind at ease, we’re there for him.

Our vacation in Greece will be there when we finish.

We head in the front door and there’s some kind of motivational speaking blaring through the home stereo system. What the hell is our stepsister listening to? Sounds boring as hell, something about med school. I thought she was getting her PhD. Whatever…PhD, med school, do I even know the difference? Aren’t they all called doctors once they graduate?

We each head a different direction, calling for Esme.

A faint sound, not a response, comes from the laundry room. As I round the corner, the most innocent-looking, petite, wide-eyed thing jumps out, her tits spilling out of her bra.

My dick’s going hard about the same time I realize she’s swinging the wooden end of a mop at me. What the fuck? I’m so distracted by why she’s only wearing a bra and panties that I can’t regroup fast enough. Maybe because all my blood’s headed to my dick.

“Oof!” The wooden shaft nails my gut, but my abs instinctively tense, minimizing the impact.

I rip it from her hands and toss it to the side before she goes for an eye or nut jab.

“Esme?”

She jumps back, crossing one of her arms in front of her milky mounds. The other hand rushes lower, her fingers splayed wide in front of her panties. My lower brain wishes she’d sink those fingers between her legs and show me how she likes to be pleased. And that hand covering her tits….she could play with her nipple.

But since she looks so damn innocent, I’ll offer to do it for her.

“Who are you? Why are you here?” The waver in her voice leaves me feeling like an ass. She juts an arm to the counter, taps her phone, and the podcast stops.

“It’s me, your stepbrother, Yakov.”

Her eyes go even wider. “How do I know I can trust you? Prove it.”

“Haven’t you seen pictures of us?” Although, it would be fair to admit that the pictures we’ve seen of her don’t look quite like the seductress in front of us.

She hesitates. “Mom doesn’t really talk about you.”

“Weird, but okay.” I pull my wallet out of my back pocket and produce a driver’s license. While she studies it, my eyes rake over her body. She’s absolutely fucking gorgeous.

My father would be livid if he knew the thoughts running through my mind. My brothers pile in behind me, presumably hearing us.

“I need clothes.” She’s still trying to cover herself, her alarm escalating as they come in. She rushes to the side, throws the washing machine open, pulls a wet blanket out, and drapes it in front of herself. What the fuck is she doing? Like we’ve never seen a naked woman before.

I’m tempted to crack a joke about learning how to properly use a mop but she’s too nervous.

“Okay, guys, cover your eyes, get out of here. Let her get dressed. And be careful of the wet floor, Esme. Our father would be pissed if you got hurt and end up in the…I don’t want you hurt.”

I almost say end up in the hospital like your mom, but he told us she doesn’t know her mom’s in the hospital. Esme thinks they’ve gone on vacation because apparently Esme doesn’t understand that her mother married into the Bratva.

But news to all of us is that her mother is an informant to the FBI. That provides extra complications since our family has been working with them lately, but didn’t realize she was playing both sides. That explains why they didn’t admit her to the local hospital. They hope to keep her business out of the prying eyes of people close to home.

As we back away, Esme says, “Could you grab my clothes from the kitchen counter and throw them in here, please?”

Timofey grabs her neatly folded shirt and shorts, hands them to me, and I set them inside the laundry room door before pulling it shut.

When she comes out, her perky nipples are no match for her t-shirt or my cock. Damn.

She must have gotten her bra and panties all wet with the blanket, and taken them off. Assuming she’s not wearing anything under her shorts or t-shirt has my dick even harder.

Zak is first to speak up. “I’m Zakhar, but you can call me Zak.”

In case she was too startled to get my name a minute ago, I offer it again. “I’m Yakov.”

She laughs. “If he’s Zakhar and I can call him Zak, can I call you Yak?”

My brothers crack up but I won’t be their laughing-stock just because our names can be awkward for non-Russians.

“If you can’t say Yakov, we’ll find a different name.” I’m tempted to have her call me a lot of things, but I’m not going to go into those right now.

Sylvie Haas obsesses over dirty-talking heroes who fall hard and fast for the women of their dreams. And often you’ll find heroes, yes plural, in one book because Sylvie has such a hard time making the heroine choose one possessive guy.

On most days, you can find Sylvie with the wind in her hair, her fingers on the keyboard, and her mind in the gutter as she thinks up new places her characters can get frisky.

Sylvie Haas books will always deliver a happily ever after, and even though they’re short, they’ll leave you satisfied!
