I can’t ever remember a time when I didn’t love books. My mom read to us when we were very small and when I learned to read, there were frequent trips to the library. I found I loved a great variety of genres. One day I remember asking my Aunt (who also loved to read) if she had any recommendations. She had two: Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. I love them both. So, my literary inspirations began with:

About a half an hour before sunset, the unease she had carried for the past several hours turned into a sudden feeling of dread. Panic overtook all rational thought and settled into her soul. Something terrible had happened. She raced toward her supplies and grabbed her backpack. Her fingers shook as she unzipped the bag and yanked out her phone. She called Greg’s number several times over before it dawned on her that he had already boarded a plane headed for Colombia. She wouldn’t be able to contact him until the morning.

Despite all attempts to banish it, the dread grew stronger with each passing hour. A growing notion that Wolf and his crew never left the sub took firm hold. The conscientious men of the Wieven could very well have remained behind to ensure that all went according to plan. The thought of such an occurrence made her sick to her stomach. The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with Debbie Peterson . . .

How would you describe you style of writing to someone that has never read your work?

Well, I am definitely not Shakespeare, but I’m not quite Poe either… Hmm. Maybe I’m a more modern form of somewhere in the middle? That comes from my husband, because really, I don’t have a clue except to say my style of writing is more narrative than it is anything else.

What mindset or routine do you feel the need to set when preparing to write (in general whether you are working on a project or just free writing)?

The only thing that is a “must” for me is instrumental music playing in the background. I have several playlists with several different moods and new ones are created all the time. That’s all I need to start writing. Well, that and maybe some cinnamon bears. That’s always nice…

Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each character all the way through to the page? Do you people watch to help with development? Or do you build upon your character during story creation?

My character’s are pretty well fleshed out before I begin writing, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t evolved a time or two.

In truth, my characters take charge of their own growth and have amazed me more times than I care to count.

People watch? Of course. It is true that it takes all kinds to make a world. A person would never meet them all without observation. Besides, it’s a fun pastime and more than likely does aid in character development. Especially the crazy characters…

I don’t think you’ll find much of me in any of my stories. This is probably a good thing…

Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character? If so which one(s)?

For all of the hours spent writing a novel, I must say that I bond with all of my characters, even the minor ones. How could I not?

Do you have a character that you have been working on that you can't wait to put to paper?

No, right now they are all pretty much either appearing in a work in progress or they are in note form.

Have you ever felt that there was something inside of you that you couldn't control? If so what?

The only think I can’t seem to control is my love of genealogy and the need to peek at my favorite genealogy sites on a daily basis. I simply must see if they have any new databases that I have to check out! After all, a missing ancestor might be hiding somewhere in there and I can’t have that, now can I?
