BLURB
A town on its knees, dread's bony fingers wrapping around its throat and squeezing, death rattles soon to follow.

Drugs, filth, and a lack of human decency are starving it of hope.

Introducing Simon Dooley, our trauma-driven wannabe superhero, the relentless voice of his dead mother pleading with him to "end the chaos." Dressed in a leotard and armed only with a dozen dog poop bags, Simon's plight will find him falling in love and going head to head with the seediest characters walking the streets.

The town needed a hero... it got Reformo.

Author Info
Mark Towse is an English horror writer living in Australia. He would sell his soul to the devil or anyone buying if it meant he could write full-time. Alas, he left it very late to begin this journey, penning his first story since primary school at the ripe old age of forty-five. Since then, he's been published in over two hundred journals and anthologies, had his work made into full theatrical productions for shows such as The No Sleep Podcast and Tales to Terrify, and has penned fourteen novellas, including Nana, Gone to the Dogs, 3:33, and Crows. Chasing The Dragon is his debut novel.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with . . . Mark Towse . . .

How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?

Haha. Great question. A lot of readers describe my work as a fever-dream type read. They never know which direction my stories will take, and that is music to my ears. Whenever I come across reviews labelling my work as ‘unique’ or ‘out there’, it puts a big smile on my face. A very dark and twisted sense of humour usually threads my work together.

What mindset or routine do you feel the need to set when preparing to write (in general whether you are working on a project or just free writing)?

For me, anything less than a three-hour chunk will not allow the necessary immersion. It usually takes me at least an hour to get back into the magic world, to reacquaint myself with the people, scenery, and smells. Once I'm in, though, I'm in. Sometimes, I sit in the same spot from sunrise to sundown, but it always feels like a hot minute.

I need peace. My phobias are lawnmowers, DIY, or the distant sound of thumping bass. If there's ever a hint of such cacophony, I'll plug in my air pods and listen to a thunderstorm. I also make my family aware that I'll be in the magic world and would prefer not to be disturbed—in a more polite manner than Jack Nicholson in The Shining, but they get the point.

Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character(s)? If so which one(s)?
Haha. It's me on the pages of this book: the same upbringing, the same claustrophobic and uncomfortable environment, all dictated by my iron-fisted mother. If I left crumbs on the counter or a cup next to the sink without washing it, my life would not be worth living. And God forbid if someone parked outside our house or started playing loud music. In those cases, the day, possibly week, would be ruined. My mother even uttered the words, "When will the chaos end?" at one point, thus the multiple references in the story. The Reformo connection is all about the fantasy world I often escaped to. Writing this was incredibly cathartic and therapeutic.

What are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year?

My biggest goal is to make Chasing The Dragon my biggest seller yet. My debut novella, Nana, is taking top prize at the moment, but I firmly believe Reformo is the man to get this job done. I say that with the intention of writing a sequel to Chasing The Dragon; please go out and buy it so we can see more of our hero wannabe.

I also want to finish my third novel: a coming-of-age seaside town horror.

Where would you spend one full year, if you could go ANYWhere, money is not a concern? What would you do with this time?

A cabin in the woods is all I'd need. Just me, the keyboard, the stars, and an endless supply of bourbon.

I'm a simple man.

Thank you Mark Towse for joining and giving a little insight to you and your process. Your work is appreciated.
