Machie Ibeke is on the verge of becoming a pilot of her own Hawk in the West African Union Military when the final flight before her promotion is interrupted by a horrifying terrorist attack.

The surviving aircrew is grounded and ordered to maintain their silence about the possible emergence of an old enemy so ruthless its sole purpose is to wipe out humanity. In the past, the fanatical Gaia Cult has used the potent Inferi Plague Virus as a terrorist weapon. The zombie virus kills, brings the dead back to life, and instills in the resurrected Scourge the overwhelming need to bite and spread the contagion.
Living with the knowledge that the world is in danger is difficult, made more complicated by the arrival of visiting family, a rogue A.I. hiding in her apartment building, and questionable activity in the Bamako Megacity.

If Machie’s suspicions are correct and the dangerous Gaia Cult has returned, then an apocalyptic outbreak is imminent, and it will be up to her to save her loved ones and find a safe haven in a dead world.

Fighting for the Survival of A Loved One
Or
Some Aunts Kick Ass
By Rhiannon Frater

What would you do to save your niece or nephew? How far would you go to ensure their survival? What (and who) would you sacrifice to get them to safety? These are the questions Machie Ibeke faces in Escape to the Last Bastion.
The Last Bastion series revolves around the last remaining city of humanity. Earth has met an apocalyptic event that has nearly eradicated the human population, resulting in women outnumbering men. Each Last Bastion book has a woman as the central focus. Maria Martinez in The Last Bastion of the Living and Lindsey Rooney in The Last Mission of the Living faced daunting personal challenges while fighting for the survival of the human race.  Machie Ibeke takes over as the central character in Escape to the Last Bastion, a novel that serves as a prequel, taking the reader back to the final days of civilization and the exodus to the Bastion.
One of the core characters in the series is Commandant Adeleke Pierce, the leader of the Constabulary (military) of the Last Bastion. What we’ve gleaned from her interactions with the main leads in the previous two books is that she’s a single mother who lost her husband before the series started. She’s a tough, intelligent, politically savvy, and somewhat mysterious character. Readers have been demanding another Bastion book with her at the center of the story (which I do have planned), but first I wanted to show the world before the devastating outbreak that kills off most of humanity. It was also a chance to show the events that shaped Commandant Pierce in her childhood. It’s her beloved aunt, Machie Ibeke, that takes the central role in Escape to the Last Bastion, and the novel revolves around her attempting to save her niece when all goes to hell in the West African Union.
I love writing about capable women who have full lives. In Machie’s case, she’s a pilot in the West African Military about to take her final flight before she receives her own Hawk. She also has a full social life, a love interest, and a complex but loving family. Her life has not always been easy. The world of the future survived a devastating war, and she spent part of her life as a refugee. Her strength of will has been shaped by loss and survival at a young age, and when the world around her begins to crack, she’s determined to save her niece against all odds.
As an aunt, I have had the joy of seeing my nieces and nephews growing up. My role in their lives has varied as we’ve moved around the state of Texas, but one thing remains the same: I would do anything to save them, and would die for them.  The book became increasingly personal to me for Machie feels the same way about her niece and that is her driving force once the apocalypse starts.
When I started the story, I asked myself, “What would I do to save my niece?”
The answer was, “Anything and everything.”
And that is Machie’s answer, too.
