BLURB
Descendant is a supernatural thriller filled with daring action, adventure, and artifice set against the backdrop of a very familiar world – but it is a world in which preternatural entities, clandestine magical orders, ancient bloodlines, and unholy alliances converge within the shadowed recesses of our darkest imaginings.
Federal Agents Selina Wolfe and Martin Crowe are called in to investigate a series of bizarre deaths in a small rural community. What first seems to be a misadventure involving black magic and satanic ritual soon takes on even more deleterious overtones, as the agents become embroiled in a plot by a sinister cabal intent on unleashing Hell on Earth.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with Bob Freeman . . .
How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?
It's a wintery mix of pulp, fantasy, gothic horror, and noir, all tied together with a magical thread steeped in a lifetime of occult interests.
What mindset or routine do you feel the need to set when preparing to write (in general whether you are working on a project or just free writing)?
Setting the proper mood is very important. My best words come when the room is lit by candlelight and appropriate music is filling the air, such as Jimmy Page's Lucifer Rising or Michael Giacchino's soundtracks for Lost or Dr. Strange.
Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each character all the way though to the page?
If your audience doesn't connect with your characters, your story isn't going to speak to them. They don't have to like the character or agree with their choices, but there has to be something to draw them in, something to make them feel invested.
It's not a conscious decision on my part. When I write, the characters seem to have a life all their own. I just try to do my best to translate their story to the page.
Do you people watch to help with development? Or do you build upon your character during story creation?
I think all writers people watch to varying degrees and bits and pieces find their way in here and there, but by and large the characters I write slowly introduce themselves to me on the page.
Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character? If so which one(s)?
Of all the characters I've written, the ones that come most easily are Agents Wolfe and Crowe, oddly enough. There's just something very comforting about their playful banter. They're deadly serious and good at their jobs, but there is plenty of snark from both that really sings for me.
Do you have a character that you have been working on that you can't wait to put to paper?
I don't really write that way. I usually pull up a blank word document and start typing. No rhyme or reason, no plan. I rarely know what characters will be showing up when I start typing. I find that far more conducive to creativity. I don't like plans, because I've never been able to stick to them. I am, if nothing else, a creature of chaos, and I thrive on that improvisational mindset.
Have you ever felt that there was something inside of you that you couldn't control? If so what? If no what spurs you to reach for the unexprienced?
That's a great question. I have not always made the best decisions. When I was younger, impulse control was a real problem for me. But I have found, as I get older, that I have tremendous willpower. Becoming a husband and father allowed me to rein in those destructive impulses. I'm still able to tap into that mindset creatively, thankfully, and write well-rounded characters that are far removed from the man I am today, but perhaps not too far afield of the boy I was.
