MARROW CHARM
Gate Cycle, #1
by Kristin Jacques
Narrator: Amie Lyn Hornick
Length: 10 hours 24 minutes
Released: June 12th 2020
Publisher: The Parliament House
Genre: YA Fantasy

"In his pursuit of the occult, the Third Reich opened the Gate to a realm of magic and brought the world to ruin. The Gate was eventually closed, but they were already in our world, and they were hungry." (The Lost History, Library of Avergard)

Azure "Azzy" Brimvine lives in a world decimated by magic, where humans have retreated underground from the overwhelming dangers of the surface. But Below is no safer than Above. Magic-borne plagues continue to eat away at the remaining human cities - a sickness that doesn’t merely kill, but creates aberrations from the stricken. People twisted by magic into something dark, dangerous, and powerful. It is an existence of fear and constant dread.

When Azzy’s brother Armin is infected and cast out into the Above, she sets out after him, determined to be there for him, no matter what he becomes. The world Above is full of monsters, both wild and cunning, some more human than Azzy was led to believe.

Armin is captured and bound for the auction block of Avergard - a ruthless city of inhuman lords and twisted creatures. To reach him, Azzy must brave the perils of the Above and the chaotic life forms created by the Gate. To reach him, she must find allies and forge new bonds in this broken world. And Azzy must reach him, before Armin’s new power is used to open the Gate once more.

TOUR Audio - NA FANTASY - THE SHRIKE & THE SHADOWS by Chantal Gadoury & A.M. Wright Narrator Ryan Haugen

THE SHRIKE & THE SHADOWS

Length: 9 hours 37 minutes

New Adult Fantasy
Review The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . THE SHRIKE & THE SHADOWS . . . Hans and Greta in a way you have not seen them before or have you. This Hans and Greta were not as loving as I remember them from the various tellings I have heard over the years. This Hans and Greta had a dirty side to them, though not with each other, at least I don't think so. I was there for the beginning. I was right there with them. Then the further into the audio I started to get a little lost and blaza about it all.

Young they are when they are cast out of there home. Due to one man's pride and depravity. Then they meet the one being most would do anything to avoid. Then let's not forget the sex that came in. I was not expecting it and it kinda caught me off guard. This was most certainly a more racier side of this once tale of the night and witches and orphans. Step in to a world that is well described and filled with more than you remember from the tale you were once told as a child.

The Narrator Ryan had a good strong voice with clear concise intonations and level consistency. The audio was clean and clear with no hitches or repetition. Ryan's voice added a little something extra to the story that was not there when read via text/ebook. The narration for me added a layer of depth.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Chantal Gadoury. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Synopsis
The village of Krume is plagued by a haunted wood and a hungry witch. It’s been that way for as long as Hans and Greta can remember, though they have never seen the witch themselves; no one has.

When men start to disappear once again in the cover of night - their bloody hearts turning up on doorsteps - the village falls into frenzied madness.

Hans and Greta, two outcast orphans, find themselves facing accusations of witchcraft and are met with an ultimatum: burn at the stake, or leave the village forever.

With nowhere else to go, they abandon their only home.

As they venture into the strange forest, their path is fraught with horrific creatures, wild and vivid hallucinations, and a mysterious man tied to the witch's past.

The Shrike is watching, just beyond the deep darkness of the woods.

Narrator Bio
Ryan Haugen tried to write for a long time. He has nothing to show for it - in fact this is the first time he’s sat down to write since college. Actually, he isn’t even sitting right now. He’s standing, and coming to grips with how writing has always caused him to deceive himself. So, that honest work tied to fiction would ever materialize shocks even him. As a narrator, Ryan has no formal qualifications or training. As a producer, he has an above-average grasp of Windows 10 and Audacity. As a purveyor of twist endings, he would have you know he quit his day job to pursue narration full time in his home studio after 7 months of part-time narration, and 15 books narrated. Ever engaged, passionate, and consumptive of all forms of media, Ryan floats in bewildered contentment at the notion anyone would want to listen to him speak for dozens of hours, but hopes you enjoy his youthful performances in the tales he tells, and that by now, you truly believe he is a better storyteller than he is writer."
