Ted Harper knew moving to Milford to open his dream bar wouldn’t be easy. But he could have never imagined he would be so easily distracted from his goal. Violet Marino is beautiful, smart, captivating, and unfortunately, his next-door neighbor. Now Ted has a dilemma on his hands he didn’t anticipate as his life becomes entangled with a woman he can’t seem to forget.

Violet Marino has spent decades caring for her family and working at her father’s restaurant as a waitress. Hardly the life she dreamed of living when she was a little girl. But after her mother died, she was never a little girl again. Thrust into the parenting role for her two younger siblings, Violet sacrificed everything for their well-being.

When a handsome business owner offers her more than just a sweet escape, Violet is tempted to take him up on the offer. Even if that means jumping into the unknown.

He added ice to her copper mug and Marciano cherries. Then he poured the Vodka with love and added the ginger beer, remembering the taste of it on her lips. Sweet and delicious. He wouldn’t mind sampling those lips again. That was if she decided to stay and he could get everyone else to leave.
“I really can’t have a drink,” she said when he turned around, mug in hand. Her eyes went to the little cocktail sword in her cup holding the cherries, and her expression grew curious.
“Sorry, it’s already made,” he announced, placing the glass on the bar. She had yet to take a seat, which meant he had to up his game. “I’ll be insulted if you don’t drink it.”
She was still staring at the sword in her drink. “Are those cherries?”
“They are.” He grinned, seeing the undeniable interest in her eyes.
She picked up the mug and took a dainty sip. Then her lips turned up with delight. “This is good.”
He placed an elbow on the bar and leaned close. “How good?”
Her gaze locked onto his, and for a moment, they just stood there, staring at one another. Her eyes were fascinating. They were a deep brown, with little specks of gold running throughout. He liked those little specks. They were mystifying, just like the woman herself.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview  with Susan V. Vaughn . . .
What are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year?
I am working hard on my Smitten series. I have four more books written, and one I am currently working on. My goal is to release one new book in this series a year.
Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you?
Writing for me has always come naturally. I was that kid with the journal locked in her room after school. I have always enjoyed expressing myself through words. I am way better at explaining how I feel through letters than I am in person. I think this is because I am constantly watching everything around me and processing it creatively.
Where would you spend one full year, if you could go ANYWhere? What would you do with this time?
I would go to Hawaii in a heartbeat. Sign me up for some sun, water, and sand. A year on an island would be spent soaking up some rays, learning how to surf, and developing a tropical romance.

Excerpt
“Do you believe me?” she asked quietly.
He turned to look at her, needing to see her beauty and erase the ugliness that had just erupted in his life. “I do.”
In her golden green eyes, there was nothing but relief. She reached up and cupped his face in her hands, and before he could react, she had pressed a soft kiss on his lips. “Thank you,” she said, pulling back. “Thank you for believing me.”
He blinked hard, his heart hammering in his chest. She kissed him out of pure gratitude, and he wanted her to do it again. Only this time he would crush her to him, and never let go.
He forced his hands to his sides. Ashlyn had been through too much already. She was trying to help his uncle, despite her own predicament. It showed him that her heart was pure and wonderful. He had to focus on protecting that heart from his family. Instead of pursuing the feelings between them, he needed to push her towards starting her own life.
He took a breath and turned to her. “I do believe you, Ashlyn—”
“Call me, Ash,” she said, and then blushed, looking away. “I mean, if you want to. My brother always did.”
Her brother called her Ash, and now she was asking him to. It confirmed she felt those sparks between them too— sparks that were so damn hard to deny.  “Ash,” he corrected. As soon as he said it, she gave him a smile so dazzling he could no longer think.

What are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year?
I am working on a new contemporary romance series set in Michigan. The first book of the series is coming out next summer with Inkspell Publishing. It is called Sweet Escape and is set in the town I grew up in! My goal is to publish one new book in this series a year.

Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you?
I have always enjoyed being creative, and writing came naturally to me. I have countless ideas for new books but bringing those ideas to life is a lot of hard work. When I start a new project, it is important for me to set writing goals and push myself through them. Otherwise, I will lose focus.

Where would you spend one full year, if you could go ANYWhere? What would you do with this time?
My husband and I have always wanted to visit Ireland where his family is from. I want to see the Loch Ness Monster, explore old castles, and check out the local pubs. I think a year-long adventure in a foreign land would provide inspiration for a new book series.

His heart pounded as he made up the distance between them. He’d fought the urge to hold her in his arms all week. He no longer could.
“Hey! What are you doing?” Her question was lost as he pulled her against him, and covered her lips with his own. She sank desperately into his embrace for a moment, before pushing him back. “Russ, stop.”
“Why?” He grabbed one of her hands, and kissed the soft skin of her palm. She smiled, her face flushing red, her eyes flashing hazel.
“Because we are supposed to be friends, and we’re at work.” She glanced nervously around the deserted hallway.
“Nah, work’s over,” he said lightly, refusing to address the friendship statement. “It’s time for us.” He secured her hand in his, and led them toward the parking lot with single focus. “I’m taking you to dinner.”
“Wait! I have to grab my things from the music room.”
“No time for that.” He quickened his pace through the parking lot, determined to take her to dinner, not caring who witnessed his desperation. He’d waited all week for this opportunity.
“I guess you’re not giving me a choice then?” She sounded amused, not annoyed, a good sign.
“Now you get it.” He winked back at her. “I am your boss, after all.”
She sighed loudly in exasperation, and then began to giggle. It made him grin like a man who had never been happier in his life.

Guest Post from Susan V. Vaughn
That time in your life where everything is simple

My priorities in college were attending class and living my life to the fullest. It was a moment in time where anything seemed possible. And that's what college is. Your first touch of freedom, without the weight of total responsibility.

I loved that time in my life. I can distinctly remember going out with my friends on the weekends, dancing for hours, before collapsing in bed, and sleeping till noon. Now, as a mother of three, I can't remember the last time I slept past eight!

It was also right around this period in my life that I remember meeting my husband. The scene was a huge house party. He was the boy wearing the red baseball cap. I was the girl singing Britney Spears at the top of her lungs. When our eyes caught, it was sparks, fireworks, and everything in-between. For that one wondrous moment, love-at-first-sight existed to us both.

That is how the main characters of my novel, Beyond Fate, meet. Julia finds herself at a party thrown by her best friend's older brother, Russell. He is the carefree fratboy looking for a good time. She is the cautious beauty carrying a secret. When they meet, the world stops completely. Unfortunately, their time of magnetism is short lived because life gets in the way. They go on their separate paths for eight long years before fate brings them together again. Now they have another shot at love. That is if they can get their act together.

It's funny how much things can change in eight years. Especially after college when you are forced to grow up completely. Your world becomes more complicated with work, kids, partners, mortgages. Your perspective on life changes.  For the lovers in my novel, eight years brings a lot of change. But they never forgot the first time they met when life was simple, and their feelings were pure.

That's the magic of that time in your life. You are not a child anymore, but you don't have all the responsibilities of a grown-up. You're free to lead with your heart. And my advice is to pay attention because sometimes your heart just might lead you to your future.
