INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE – Valerian St-Amand

“So Valerian, tell me more about this witch you met this summer.” I watch him one cold December afternoon, sitting in a booth at the back the Serpent Maudit, his brother’s nightclub in Old-Montreal.

The immortal invited me here for the interview, so I don’t see the cursed vampires he has hidden in the crypt of his sanctuary while they learn to contain their extreme blood hunger so that they can function in the human world without hurting anyone.

Val shoots me a dark look. I see deep emotions raging in his gaze, quickly repressed.

He still wears his heavy outdoor wool-coat, the dark curls of his hair brushing the fox fur collar. Every one of his movement is measured, from the way he levels his chin to look at me casually, to the calm touch that lay on his dog, a hefty chocolate Labrador sleeping with his head on his master’s lap, the animal’s body stretched on the leather bench next to Valerian.

“Maisie Thibodeau,” he finally says, his voice hoarse.

“She’s a real witch?” I ask.

“Of the Coven of the White Holly. In the small town of Berwick Falls in Maine.”

“Your brother Magnovald said you were taken by her,” I pointed. “The first time you saw her.”

Valerian nodded then shrugged. “Maybe. But what does it matter?”

“She’s coming here, to Montreal.”

“Yeah. I know.”

“So, what will you do about that?”

“About her?” He let out a slow breath, his full lips a thin line. “Nothing. She’ll be here for Emmeline.”

“You’re ex-girlfriend?”

“The thorn in my side,” he said, lazily leaning back in his leather bench.

“You don’t love Emmeline anymore.”

He shakes his head, mixed emotions warring on his forehead. “I did once, I think. Over three hundred years ago, now.”

“But you don’t anymore.”

“She lost her soul. My fault.”

“You wanted her to be immortal, like you.”

“Yep.” He stretches his arm wider, pinning me under a smoldering gaze.

His intensity hits me full force, but I persist. I want to know. “So you did love her.”

“Look, Madame l’Auteur,” he shoots at me, as he leaned forcefully forward into the table between us. “Yes, I loved Emme, or at least I thought I did. I was eighteen. I turned her. And then she turned thousands. Vampires. There’s no stopping them. One mistake. And I now have to fix it.”

“For eternity,” I say. “You’ve been atoning for that one mistake for centuries.”

“I have.” He huffs and pats his dog’s flank with a calm and steady hand. The strong fingers dig into the deep brown fur while his dog raises trusty chocolate eyes at him.

“And what about Maisie Thibodeau?”

“I don’t know.” His gaze turns troubled. “I saw her only that one time at the parley between the Warlocks of the Black Oak, the Elders of the White Holly and us, Mont-Royal Immortals. She was on the fringe of the forest’s clearing, with the other witches.”

“You didn’t talk to her?”

“No. Just saw her. Couldn’t take my eyes of her. It’s like there was this strange connection between us. Seigneur! That flimsy summer dress she wore didn’t help either.”

“And now she’s coming here?”

“Yes. Diesel Stanford of the Warlocks wants Maisie to watch over Emme. To make sure she won’t hurt anyone. I have no choice. I don’t want an all-out war between the warlocks, the witches and the vampires.”

“So where does that leave you with Maisie?”

“There is no ‘with her’ happening. I’m not having another relationship. Too risky. And, she’s mortal.”

“I see. So how will you cope with her living at the Sanctuaire? Both of you under the same roof?”

“No idea.” He sneers. “I guess we’ll find out.”

“Ex,” Cass corrected, dropping the dead beer cans into the brown paper bag marked with the logo of the Fortins’ grocery store.

“So, you two will just like, live together. But…nothing?” Griff asked.

“That’s the plan,” Ren acknowledged. “This is a fake marriage. We’ll just divorce in a couple of years.”

“Hey, it’s her!” Mag elbowed him as the pub’s door opened, letting some fresh air in.

She’d come to the club to talk to him countless times in the last three months, but today was different. Today, her quest was personal.

Bryce Jackson slid her damp palms on the wool fabric of her pantsuit and hoisted herself from her stool in the Singing Kraken Tavern.

Pushing her drink away with resolve, she eyed him again.

That’s it. No more waiting.

She was here to do one job. Better get it done fast.

For half an hour already, she’d been observing him while aimlessly twirling the straw in the lowball glass of her diet soda. Not once did she break her focus.

She had watched him order his beer. Then, she’d studied his reflection in the faded mirror behind the bar while he exchanged casual banter with the bartender serving him.

He had flirted with at least three women dropping on him. First, she saw the whisper in the blonde’s ear. The girl, a tall beauty covered in swirling tattoos, had laughed before kissing him on the mouth.

Minutes after, he’d swapped phone numbers with a gorgeous black woman in regal yellow silk. Then, there was the small purple-haired girl, who had playfully tousled the dark curls from his forehead, before jumping to straddle his lap as he’d let his fingers trail lazily on her naked thigh.

Without question, he was hot.

Meet Rey…. (Her POV)

Reynolds Stanford was a tall strapping man. His shoulders were wide under the fitted white t-shirt now sullied from the slayed monster’s blood, his posture solid with the harpoon planted at his side.

Saira’s insides, still bristling from the shifting hormones, rumbled with lust. Her niece Kerala had forgotten to mention how hot the recluse warlock was.

“What the hell is this?” Rey glanced at the sea then back at her, his brows knitted in confusion. “Where did you come from?”

She shrugged, her lips still curled in gentle amusement at recalling his earlier shock of seeing her appear out of nowhere. “Your cousin Diesel sent me.”

“Diesel, huh?” His tone lightened as he shook his head and stored his harpoon by the hatch leading below. “I should have known, the boy likes his magic.”

“He thought you might need help.” Barely five minutes ago, she’d been standing inside a magical circle at Breaker Hall in Seaport while Diesel and his mother, both extremely powerful sorcerers, had performed the ritual that had sent her here.

When her niece Kerala—who also happened to be Diesel Stanford’s wife—had learned through her fishermen connections that their cousin Rey had decided to sit out the tropical storm in a haunted cove, Diesel had been worried for his safety. Saira had volunteered to help. She’d been visiting with the couple for a fortnight and getting bored.

From her perch on the top deck, she surveyed the perfect circle of bay in the last light of the ending day. The mounting surf crashed at the shore on high cliffs dotted with tall pines. The one narrow pebble beach was littered with small, broken derelict boats, their mismatched planks oddly jutted upwards in their final journey.

She shuddered and her smile vanished. “Devil Eye Cove. Doesn’t look like the friendliest place.”

A creature. Val tightened his fist.

She hadn’t said the word, he had. But he knew that was what witches and warlocks thought of him and his brothers.

And while he couldn’t care less about the opinion of others, he was expecting more from her. But no, she was only here to study him.

As he grimly stood in the Sanctuaire’s chapel, he watched her pour over a giant paper map of the city. She had stretched it over the altar, bordered it with five black candles and speckled the surface with anvil dust mixed with bone powder. A handful of railroad spikes and the hypodermic needle that had pricked Emmeline lay at the center.

His mind was on the witch instead of whoever had been after his blood.

He just couldn’t let it go. A future high priestess. Sounded like Marianne Thibodeau had forgotten to mention a few things about her granddaughter.

It shouldn’t matter. Really. Already her essence was fading from his veins. The gentle touch a waning memory.

Yet here she stood above the map. Her jet-black hair tied into a loose braid fell over one shoulder, the thick strand ending just at the tip of her breast. The small and high curve was much too defined under the small black t-shirt. The fabric of her top thin enough that he could make the outline of a small push-up bra.

Stop it, diable! Focus on the job. His balled fists and pained breath didn’t go unnoticed.

“You need to feed, Valerian.” Father Grégoire was right beside him, a heavy hand on his shoulder while his eyes went from Val to Maisie. The priest knew exactly how the immortal felt, the woman drawing both a surge of lust and hunger deep within him. His insides twisting and growling.

Val lifted a defiant chin at his friend. “We have time.”
