HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR - URBAN FANTASY - GUARDIAN OF MONSTERS (Sleuths of Shadow Salon, #1) by Catherine Stine

Witchy and Supernatural Power of the Feminine Fun Facts!
Compiled by Author Catherine Stine

Before people had hospitals and surgeons to fix people, they had midwives and herbalists. When babies or moms died in childbirth, or the herbal fix was insufficient to cure what we would now know was a fatal disease, who do you think was blamed? The same women who delivered babies and gave expert herbal remedies! In a fearful and ignorant world, they were labeled as witches, or agents of the devil.
***
Ironically, in ancient Rome even though women were housebound with zero political power, the most revered, influential people were the high priestesses presiding over the oracles, such as the one at Delphi. These women were said to be able to predict the future, wield supernatural powers and have innate knowledge of the divine realms. Greek citizens would go on pilgrimages to seek out their womanly wisdom.
***
In Chaucer’s and Boccaccio’s European middle ages (mid 1300s) people were expected to be devout in their Christianity. Many believed literally in the devil and the power of witches. Interestingly, as devout as they were to the going religion, they also prayed to the sprites and night nymphs of their recently dropped Pagan beliefs. They also believed in Fortuna, or the wheel of Fortune: that fortunes rose and fell by the whirl of a wheel, often portrayed by a beautiful woman, Fortuna. How’s that for supernatural female power!
***
During the Victorian Era in 1899 Charles Godfrey Leland published a book called Aradia or Gospel of the Witches. This Aradia goddess, the incarnation of Diana/Artemis was going to bring magic to the Victorians and hopefully free women from the oppression of the times.
***
Tamsin Blight 1798-1856 was a famous English witch healer, able to remove curses or spells from a person. She was also said to have put spells on those who displeased her. She was also known as Tammy Blee and Tamson.
***
In the 1920s and 30s there was a craze for psychics, card readers, and mediums who claimed they could communicate with people’s dead relatives. Harry Houdini, the famous magician, ironically made it his life’s work to try and debunk these folks. Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote the Sherlock Holmes series was a huge believer in the supernatural. He had heated debates with Houdini.
***
The Tarot fascinates me. I collect cards for their variety and amazing images. They are thought to have originated all the way back in ancient Egypt, as a cosmic source of wisdom and divination of the future. The Egyptian word TAR means royal and ROmeans royal – thus the royal road to wisdom. Later, in northern Italy, a complete deck for card playing and gambling was devised. In France in the 1700s, a “cartomancer” named Jean Baptiste-Alliette created the imagery in the decks we often see today. There are cups, swords, wands, and pentacles. And the Major Arcana cards that hold great symbolism, such as the hermit, the world and the death card (which can also mean rebirth!)

BLURB
Celestine, witch and wolf shifter has a talent for prophetic drawings. She’s shocked when she draws her landlord Ray with his eyes gouged out and a strange winged-mermaid leaning over him. Later she finds an eyeless Ray dead on the sidewalk. All she wanted to do was open a gallery, but first she must apprehend his killer. In a note she found after he died, Ray revealed he wasn’t just a leather-smith but a supernatural pirate mage. Years back, his Jekyll crew trapped the evil Demon Three Eyes clan. Ray had feared they’d escaped, were stalking him, and would soon wreak havoc on Savannah.

Oryn, a fellow student in Celestine’s continuing ed art class, is a fae and a thorn in her side, when he asks nosy questions about the case. Yet, she’s drawn to him when he’s her masseur at the spa she frequents, and he’s clever at brainstorming leads regarding Ray’s case. He insists his air magic could come in handy.

When pirates in Ray’s old crew are murdered, their body parts stolen, Celestine puts more horrifying clues together. She’ll need everyone on board, including Oryn and Luna, a mermaid asking to show her sea-glass sculptures at Celestine’s new gallery—the very same mermaid in Celestine’s tragic drawing of Ray. Otherwise, the lethal monstrosity Demon Three Eyes is unleashing on Savannah will destroy the city and everyone in it.

This series may appeal to fans of Kim Harrison and Charlaine Harris.

Mics were thrust in her face as she stepped toward the front stairs.
“How do you feel about Ray Bartello’s murder?”
“Do you have a statement for the press?”
“Is it true that your drawing predicted Bartello’s death?”
“Why would you draw him eyeless?”
“Are you the murderer?”
She waited until that last crappy question—more an accusation—to say anything. Then she stared at the reporter. With scalding rage contained in a deceptively quiet hiss, she said, “Ray Bartello was a good friend of mine. I’m heartbroken by his passing.”
She glanced at Oryn for moral support. His slightly narrowed eyes seemed to say, Go slow, you don’t owe them. She agreed. After the supernatural attacks, she was not going to hint that she knew a damn thing, because the more that bad entities knew she was trying to figure out the case, the more they would try to maul, even kill her. Oryn gave a faint nod, his eyes tinting green. She went on.
“I know nothing about how this happened. You could camp here for days, and I still couldn’t tell you more. The proper place to provide any tips or leads is to the Savannah Police.”
As she pushed through the group, Oryn walked slightly behind her, since the reporters were busy photographing them together, no doubt fuel for salacious media.
“How do you know Miss LeBlanc? Are you dating her?” some ballsy reporter asked Oryn. He didn’t answer.
“Did you know Ray Bartello? Did you or Miss LeBlanc have a fight earlier on the day he was found?” asked another.
“Can you tell us anything more about the case?” asked a third.
Oryn face wrinkled in disgust. “Look, Miss LeBlanc needs peace. She’s said what she can. Yes, we’re friends, not that it’s your business,” he added sharply. “You may as well go get some sleep. Camping out here won’t get you what you seek.” He swept his arm around
Celestine, and they hurried up the stone stairs leading to her place.
Oryn stopped on the stoop while Celestine unlocked the door. “So, I’ll see you at class tomorrow? Will you be okay?” he asked. “If you want, I can cast a few air wards around the house so you can get a worry-free night’s sleep. Otherwise—”

“It’s not your job to protect me,” she said, gazing up at him and realizing how very much taller he was, next to her five-foot, seven-inch frame. Good goddess, the man must be six and a half feet tall if he’s an inch.

Tagline: Fiera was born a sea witch with no inkling of her power. And now it might be too late.

BLURB
Witch of the Cards is a supernatural romantic suspense set in 1932 on the Jersey shore. Fiera has left the Brooklyn orphanage where she was raised and works in Manhattan as a nanny. She gets a lucky break when her boss pays for her vacation in Asbury Park. One evening, Fiera and her new friend Dulcie wander down the boardwalk and into Peter Dune’s Tarot & Séance, where they attend a card reading.

Fiera has an unsettling ability to sense future events and people’s hidden agendas. She longs to either find out the origin of her powers or else banish them because as is, they make her feel crazy. When, during the reading, her energies somehow bond with Peter Dune’s and form an undeniable ethereal force, a chain of revelations and dangerous events unspool.

For one, Fiera finds out she is a witch from a powerful sea clan, but that someone is out to stop her blossoming power forever. And though she is falling in love with Peter, he also has a secret side. He’s no card reader, but a private detective working to expose mediums. Despite this terrible betrayal, Fiera must make the choice to save Peter from a tragic Morro Cruise boat fire, or let him perish with his fellow investigators. Told in alternating viewpoints, Fiera and Peter each struggle against their deep attraction. Secrets, lies, even murder, lace this edgy fantasy.

From Lovers of Paranormal: “Interesting story of witches, deceit, secrets, romance and friendship. Fun and creative.”

If I only had a week in this glorious beach town, I wanted to catch up with sleep and plunge into as many escapades as possible—even bewildering, outlandish ones.
We walked in, to the jangle of Mr. Dune’s door chimes. I skated around, ogling the floor-to-ceiling shelves brimming with leather-bound books on cosmic mysteries, spiritualism, and witchcraft. Two immediate standouts were Ten Ways to Practice Mentalism and Dona Bella, Memoirs of a Southern Witch. These were my fare, similar to a favorite book at the public library—a tome on dark magic. The most stirring part was about each witch dynasty having its own grimoire, a sort of magical recipe book. I had no clue as to why dark tales tickled me so, and often wondered about my taste.
Still, I read everything I could get my hands on, even boring books that drifted me right off to the Land of Nod. At my nanny job, I was so desperate for stories I even read the tedious articles about cooking and how to throw a proper cocktail party in Mrs. Cuthbert’s Reader’s Digest and Home Arts magazines.
Mr. Dune strode toward us. His handsome aura and towering presence intimidated yet thrilled me. He was dressed in crisp, charcoal gray pants and a vest with a double-breasted pinstriped jacket. “Are you lovely ladies here for the séance?” He held out a long, elegant hand, studded with a silver ring. I barely collected my wits enough to shake it and nod. Dulcie’s hand whooshed out and hardly touched his before she clamped it protectively back to her side.
No doubt about it, he was the most striking man I’d ever seen. His thick mop of dark hair tapered into long sideburns, rendering his jawline a tad dangerous. I guessed he was in his mid-twenties. When his coffee-brown eyes gleamed at me, my breath caught, and a heat greater than any moonshine fired through me.
We paid the dime admission. He escorted us to a round, wooden table with lion-footed legs where we joined a heavyset older couple and a reedy gentleman with thin, blond hair. His lime-fizz eyes darted over to Dulcie, and then away. Two empty chairs still beckoned.
Dulcie looked terrified, so I smiled at her. She calmed enough to take a seat.

Mr. Dune strode to the window, loosened the crimson curtains, and lowered their heavy velvet over the windows, lending the already-pensive storefront a mystical aura.

BLURB
Meet Indigo Rain, a beautiful but lonely mermaid. Regretful of a dark past, she has vowed to remain alone and research ancient merfolk tribes. When she unearths a seabed burial site that even she cannot identify, she shares this with a High Council merfolk historian. But she keeps one shocking secret to herself.

Bay Finley is the flirty, dashing Royal merfolk Keeper assigned to teach Indigo on Pyreshore, a glamoured city of supernaturals tasked with keeping invaluable knowledge alive. Indigo thinks Bay is a know-it-all. She also thinks he’s dangerously handsome. He’s engaged to Abigail Torrent, a Royal, unlike Indigo, but he’s spending time with Indigo in the lab…

Indigo has three quests: Uncover the mystery of the burial tablet, resist falling in love, and never, ever reveal her biggest secret, even to the Keepers.

Some secrets heal, some kill. Other secrets change life as we know it.

10 books, 10 authors, 10 keepers, 1 shared world. Read in any order!

Excerpt:
They plunged downward. Indigo felt the transformative rush as her legs changed to a single tailfin, and her hips and below became a sheen of golden scales. She breathed in water and wriggled her way downward. As she did, she stole peeks at Bay. His merman patterns, like ruddy tribal tattoos, emerged along his jawline, down his muscled arms and on both sides of his lean torso. His scales, a rusty gold, matched the patterns on his skin, and glittered brightly against the darker waters like the sea-glass she so loved. His chest and abs seemed to swell and flex at the same time with the strength of a Poseidon, the grace of a marathon swimmer, the glory of a merman Royal in his prime. She forced herself to look away, and to concentrate on seeking out the tablets, whether they were the nano-synth ones, more of the type in that hidden burial chamber, or another type of artifact altogether.
They swam a good way around the outer perimeter, and found nothing of note except for a shattered belt-pack, most likely from the mining accident. She left it there. A little farther on Bay found a cracked human skull. Indigo was sure this was also from a miner, fatally injured in the blast.
She and Bay dug a plot and buried the thing, after she argued that it would be a dishonor to the human dead to ferry it to Pyreshore. “I witnessed that accident,” she explained to him. “There’s nothing more to learn from a human miner’s cracked skull. We’re here for the merfolk.”
He agreed. Halfway around the next perimeter, Bay found another synth plaque, half buried in a whorl of sand and shattered shells. He gingerly slid it in his pack. They gave each other the thumbs up and carried on. For another hour, they worked their way around the crest until they reached the chasm itself. The sight made Indigo shudder. It wasn’t that there was anything visually horrific about the opening, with its piles of sand mixed with shell and coral shards. It was its energy—pulling them toward it as if subterranean demons were sucking them in, famished enough to gulp them down whole. As if this gaping wound was the dark force of what humans called Hell—an eternal, cursed tunnel lined with sticky, deadly evil.
Bay tread water near its edge. Trepidation was etched on his face. “What if… we dove down and explored this damn hellhole together?”
So he connected it with hell too. He must feel the force, luring them both in. “You sure, Bay? Only a week ago I hauled you up, half dead, from this site. You were hooked up to all kinds of wires in the hospital, remember?”
“I’ll never forget.” Their eyes met in a question, followed by a resolve.
Something else was on Indigo’s mind. She realized, as she undulated closer to the chasm, that she had harbored her own plans to head back as soon as she gathered the courage, to explore the hidden alcove inside the wall of the burial chamber where she’d found the orb.
The orb… what was it exactly? Why did it have its own tiny room? Why was the wall there like a mollusk that grew and shrank? How was it connected to the supposed merfolk coffins? Or was it pure coincidence they existed side by side? She didn’t want to lie to Bay anymore. But she wasn’t ready to spill her guts about the orb’s existence with him either. There were still too many questions.
“So, are we doing this?” He nodded toward the abyss.
“Yeah, we’re doing this. But of one of us gets badly mauled, or worse, the other will haul both of our tailfins up and out of there. And if you see the phantom fish or hear screams in languages you don’t understand you’ll tell me. You won’t just chalk it up to volcanic pressure. Agree?”
“Okay, sure. I’ll keep an open mind. Let’s head down together. As allies.” With this, he held out his hand.
She took it. His palm gripping hers was electric, and they thundered down in a flurry of bubbles.

BLURB
A heartbroken furious alpha, a forbidden childhood crush revisited.

Will karmic justice destroy them both?

From the languid, sexy heat of New Orleans, all the way to the icy Canadian Wilderness, supernatural creatures live shadow lives amongst mortals. But what if one of the most powerful and regal of beings—wolf shifters—found their packs disappearing through longstanding battles and vicious payback?

The Royal Alpha Wolves Club, a worldwide, ancient organization formed to keep order and secrets safe among werewolf packs is faced with this very dilemma. So, when the club leader gives the dire order for all royals to find a mate and produce an heir within a year it’s in the wolf shifters’ best interest. Wayland, though, is not on board.

Meet Wayland Leblanc—legendary royal alpha, hell-bent on revenge for his murdered mate. When the edict comes down from the leader in his new territory that all royals mate and produce an heir within the year or lose royal status, Wayland hits the road. He’s not ready. Instead, he charges up to Canada in his mini-camper, to wreak revenge on Thorn, the Tundra shifter who killed his mate Sabine and their unborn babe. He conscripts an army of coyote shifters in his revenge plot, and stuffs down his lingering heartache by partying with neighboring witches.

What he doesn’t plan for is falling hard for Stormy, Thorn’s mysterious sister. But pursuing a star-crossed Juliet to his Romeo just might cost Wayland and Stormy their lives.

4 books. 4 authors. 4 alphas. 1 shared world.

“Who are you?” It was dawning on him. Could it be his old Tundra playmate, Stormy? They hadn’t seen each other for years. It was rumored that Thorn had kept her so protected it was like she was locked in his ivory tower prison. Holy damn, if it was Stormy, he should have nothing to do with her. She was Thorn’s little sister. Could he still be confused? He’d just been hit so hard that maybe his brain had gone freaking haywire. “Where’s Ransom?”
“He’s alive but you messed him up good. Why are you coming around, so angry, gunning for a fight? You look so familiar, but… ” She ran a cooling cloth over Wayland’s swollen eye. She smelled of forest phlox and river moss—of the Canadian tundra in summer. He struggled to get up again and realized she’d tied his arms, torso and ankles down with thick vines. He didn’t believe in hurting a woman. But his rage bubbled dangerously close to the surface. If he stayed like this too much longer, and she leaned closer to him as she cleaned his wounds he might not be able to stop from snapping his head up and biting her.
“Why the hell did you tie me up?” he snarled.
“For your own safety and for mine. You seemed unhinged. Who are you anyway? You look so familiar.”
“Wayland. I used to live around here.”
“Wayland!” She stopped cleaning his swollen eye and stared down at him. “Wayland Leblanc.”
“Yeah, a damn Leblanc. The Tundras, led by your vicious brother slaughtered us a year ago in case you need reminding. Bunch of fucking savages,” he growled.
“I know who you are. Your father killed my father.”

“So, you are Stormy, Thorn’s sister,” he muttered. The very man I’m hunting down.

In 1854, Evalina Stowe witnesses the murder of her brother by Dr. Dowdrick, an enraged client at the tailor’s where they work. Desperate to stop him, she rouses a swarm of wasps that sting the doctor while she stabs him with scissors, and then flees. EXCERPT
WITCH OF THE WILD BEASTS

A Standalone Novel - © 2020 Catherine Stine

The wind whistled through my thin muslin clothes as the porter led me down what seemed a narrow pathway to the back of the establishment. “Stairs ahead,” he warned.
I stumbled up one, two, then three steps and through what seemed like two sets of doors. They slammed behind us.
“Is this Dr. Dowdrick’s establishment?” I ventured.
“Patience. They’ll speak to you when they’re ready,” was his cryptic reply.
They?
He led me to a sturdy chair and eased me onto it. Then he stretched my arms tightly behind the chair and secured them with chains. “They’ll see you shortly,” he said. With that, he was gone.
It was terribly disorienting to not have the use of sight. My arms throbbed. If I did not move them shortly, they would turn numb and bloodless. “Please, Porter, come back!” I begged.
“He is gone. I deign to speak with you now.” This petulant voice was none other than Dowdrick’s.
“Take my hood off, if you please.”
“Perhaps, perhaps not. Do not rush me. So, you requested a visit to my office and here you are. Happy now?” He sniggered.
I resisted my rising panic. “As I said over in Cherry Hill, I know what you did to Dolly.”
“What might that be?”
“You drugged her with a foul concoction that banished her memory.”
“Ah, not foul. I’d call it miraculous. But, yes, correct. I could do the very same to you.”
“I have told other prisoners about your experiments. Why, I even spoke to Dr. Shakesby about your testing without patents. If prisoners start to sicken or die while under the influence of your elixirs, people at Cherry Hill will know who was responsible.”
Dowdrick let out a malicious chuckle. “Who will believe your word over mine? Who will care that a thief or a madam or a filthy witch went into a stupor, even died? Most would find it pure relief. Benjamin Franklin and William Penn’s Philadelphia has a thin sheen of civility and reason. But we both know one need not dig far beneath its surface to find rampant superstition and chaos lurking there.”
He was right. People claimed to be God-fearing Christians but oftentimes they prescribed to the old ways—hexes and curses and calling up night sprites to keep their households safe.
“Look, I am not here to blame or report on you,” I told him. “Let’s put that aside. I am here to discuss a business proposal. What exactly was it you gave Madame Rouge?”
“Ha! You’re beside yourself with curiosity.”
I pushed on. “What did you gain from cutting her and stitching her up?”
“I had my reasons.”
“I am riveted. Please, tell me…”
Dowdrick broke into peals of laughter. It disgusted me he was so thoroughly enjoying this. “You are a mere street mongrel. Your elevated sense of importance is a joke.”
“I must be the smartest of street mongrels then! For I know more than you can imagine about you and your dubious activities.”
“If nothing else, you entertain me,” he said jovially. “Do go on!”
I needed to stoke his explosive rage, his rivalries. I used every tidbit of what Shakesby had relayed and made up the rest. “You are in savage competition with the finest doctors in Philadelphia. There is a frantic race to find cures and obtain landmark patents. The first to succeed in these will be graced with having their discoveries in the medical books; they will be the toast of the prime medical establishments.”
“The only frantic thing is the fairytale you weave,” Dowdrick said. But his next question revealed his jealous interest. “If you are so wise, which famous doctors do you know of?”
“Thomas Mutter for one. Already famed for his revolutionary work with burn victims. They say he conjures practical magic with facial restoration.”
“Ha!” Dowdrick was clearly taken aback. “He is no one to me.”
“Surely you’ve read of him. Why, I hear tell folk are lined up for blocks around Jefferson Medical Hospital waiting eagerly to be helped by Dr. Mutter.”
“From where, pray tell, did you receive these faulty rumors?” Dowdrick’s tone gave it away. He was seething with envy. I had hit the mark. If I could see him now, no doubt his nostrils would be flared, his pudgy cheeks red with fury.
“Ah! I must hold some cards close to my vest until you listen to my offer. And if you please, before we conduct business, remove my hood.”
“All hell-fired up you are, Miss Almighty! I could take you down a peg or two; administer the same powder I gave to Madame Rouge. It would make you forget everything. If I give you enough, it could easily kill you…”
At this, my pulse began to beat in terror, but I forced myself to calm. “And then? You would never gain fame through my method. My foolproof method.”
“No need. I already have the powders I gave Madame Rouge. I will be the star of the spring Discovery Symposium. Dr. Mutter will be astonished. They will all be astonished.”
Discovery Symposium! This was better news than expected—a tool to gain leverage. “Then your powders and vials must be quite magical to astound the best doctors in Philadelphia! Do tell what the mixtures are intended for.”
“Surgery without pain,” he exclaimed. “We are all racing to perfect the medication that can do this. With it, patients will not have to get blind drunk, or scream in agony as we cut off limbs and stitch their raw nubs.”
His earnest answer caught me off-guard. It was a worthy quest, which forced me to admit that villains as well as heroes had missions they believed in. People contained both good and bad; the truth and the light could, indeed be hard to discern through the many gray layers. This made me think of Amity and her spiritual verses. Still, life wasn’t only about moral perfection, but striving to be better, to do better. I had my own mission, however winding and I needed to stay the course. “Your powder so perfectly put Dolly into a painless state of being,” I gushed. “Why, she had no memory of even being under the blade. How utterly impressive, Doctor! I misread you. I underestimated you and your talents. Let me ask again with a more open mind, where did this impressive mixture come from?”
“My partner, Dr. Sumac procures it from Peru,” Dowdrick revealed with fervent glee. “A lovely white flower. They call it Angel’s Trumpet, though it has a pinch of the devil in it, too.”
I laughed with him, all the while, my innards crawled in loathing. The impertinence, the criminality of experimenting on a woman, or any person—without their consent! It was Dowdrick who should be behind bars in Cherry Hill Penitentiary, not I. Not Dolly, who was helping desperate women earn a day’s wage—albeit in a questionable trade—yet with their full consent. “I suppose we all have a bit of the devil in us,” I said, “mixed in with pure genius.”
“My concoction is rather genius,” he agreed.
The fact was, this Peruvian powder could kill. It could scrub someone’s mind. Make them a zombie as in one of Poe’s horror stories. But I dared not say this.
Because I had him.
Dowdrick had already said too much. His overweening pride was the glue that would bind him. I only had to lure him in slowly so he would not see my web. Prideful men had an insatiable appetite for flattery, adulation, shiny medals and coinage. I would do my best to supply these if it kept my friends at Cherry Hill Prison safe from harm. If it brought him to justice.
We were quiet for a time. Silence was dangerous though, for I sensed Dowdrick also knew he had confided too much.
“We are done here for now,” he said coldly as he began to pace, leaning to one side.
“My mysterious offer still awaits,” I tempted. This heavy hood was stifling. I needed to hurry before I fainted from its wooly confines. “Are you not curious? It will propel you to the highest of heights. Make you far more famous than Dr. Mutter.”
“What is it then? Hurry! Out with it! I must get to work. I run an entire medical college here.” He groaned. “My ribs pain me where you plunged in those infernal scissors. At night, I can hardly walk. I brought you here to interrogate you where I have total control, to find out how much you know. Perhaps also to give you a taste of your own medicine,” he finished sharply.
The powder. I must avoid him dosing me.
