Excerpt: Kendra’s Point of View

“Thank you for your assistance,” Derek acknowledged the man who guided us to the morgue.
“Now, I’d like this entire room cleared for at least an hour. Your morgue director can verify that order.” Derek nodded, and as he turned toward me, our guide moved away to the two working coroners, escorting them out of the room.
“Dang, this place reminds me of places in the dark plane.” Jenna stood in the center of the room and spun a slow circle. “It’s almost like I can feel Bertellia’s presence, even though I know that woman is gone forever.”
Once everyone cleared the room, I went to work crushing and mixing up the concoction of herbs in a small burning pot. “I can see the film that cocoons the body you mentioned.” I lit the herbs, allowing a quick flame. Then I blew out the little fire and left the blended ingredients smoldering. As I waved the pot over the body, I said the ritual words. Jenna and Derek joined in the mantra, repeating it with me two more times to break the bond holding Mr. Mead’s soul.
A massive pop, deep enough to shake the floor, startled me. Jenna screamed. Derek jumped in front of me, pushing my body back. “Grab your blades. Mine’s vibrating as if it wants to act on its own.” He grabbed his dagger (the one that NaNa Rosa had given to everyone on our team for protection and guidance against evil spirits from the dark plane) out of the sheath tucked into the back of his pants.
Jenna slipped hers from the sheath strapped to her thigh.
The film surrounding Mr. Mead had disappeared, and the oozing, dark entity that rose out of him charged the air with a distinct acrid odor that immediately gagged me.
I grabbed a wastebasket and threw up.
“Wow, you actually tossed your cookies, Sparky.” Jenna stared at me. “Are you sick?” She stood next to me, dagger in her hand. “Come on, woman, we need you now.”
“Rotten eggs, Kendra. Do you have your dagger in your hand?” Derek’s full attention remained on the grizzly form of leaking pustule bumps and dripping saliva.
I puked again, and my stomach continued to buck and roll. My protection sigil burned, telling me this guy came from the dark plane and would love to feed off our energy. I had tucked the blade in my bag with the herbs. Right now, that satchel lay on the floor about three feet to my right. Gagging and swallowing, I inched toward the bag to hold off the inevitable next wave of nausea.
The entity pulled itself entirely out of Mead’s body, red eyes gawking at us. It caught my movement, and a wretched toothy smile spread across its disgusting thick, slimy lips. The horrendous monster stood on the opposite side of Mead and stepped toward me through the gurney and Mead’s body as if wading through water.
“Sparky, get your dagger!” Jenna readied to throw.
“You look tasty, you’re first,” it rasped and stretched a claw at me, snapping its sharp nails.
Derek and Jenna threw their blades, hitting the evil creeper in the heart and slowing its progress toward me.
I dove for my bag, and the hilt of my dagger snugged into my hand. I yanked it out and flung it with a snap of my wrist. The blade found its mark and sunk into the entity’s heart beside the other two daggers. A vicious scream howled out, dropping Derek and me to our knees with hands covering our ears. I watched as it burned from the inside out and turned into white ash that disappeared, leaving Mr. Mead’s spirit staring at us.
“Where the hell am I?” He looked from Derek to me to Jenna and back at Derek. Then his gaze wandered around the room. “Am I inside a morgue?” His mouth dropped open when he saw his body on the gurney. “Am I dead?”
“I’m so sorry to tell you this, but yes, you died. We don’t know how. Can you remember anything that happened?” I didn’t want to force him, but his anxious shaking took a drastic turn as he stared at our daggers lying beside his feet.
“Did you guys kill me?” His image faltered into momentary static, but then he restabilized into a vivid body, appearing alive. “I want answers.” His lips pinched together, and then his eyes wandered to his dead body on the gurney. He slumped and looked at Derek. “What will my husband do?”
I glanced at Derek and watched his eyes widen.
“Let us know who your significant other is, and we’ll inform him of your passing.” Jenna stepped closer to him.
Mr. Mead huffed. “What would you say? Even I don’t know how I died.”
“We believe it had something to do with Sassy Blaze.” Derek moved beside Jenna, and I followed.
“All I remember is heading to the prison wing to check on the prisoners there. I noticed one guard sleeping beside the door, totally against protocol, so I kicked his foot to awaken him. Then I noticed a green powdery substance around his nose and wondered if he was on drugs. That’s all I recall, other than getting slammed against the wall and hearing the iron door slide open. That normally happened for my prisoner check, but I don’t remember anything after that. I blacked out.” His eyes went wide. “Did anyone look at surveillance?”
“The monitors recorded static in that cell block. That’s why I’m asking you.” Derek took a couple steps to stand directly in front of Mr. Mead. “Sassy Blaze hung herself in her cell. That got caught on surveillance and then her body disappeared. Do you know anything about that?”
“Sassy is dead?” His spine went erect, and he shook his head. “No, that can’t be right. That lunatic wants to murder the FBI Task Force team that imprisoned her. There’s no way she would kill herself.” He glared at Derek, and Derek stared back at him. “Wait a minute. You think I had something to do with Sassy hanging herself?”
“Did you?” Derek’s body went rigid.

Excerpt:
The twenty-minute drive took about twelve. When I pulled in, an old silver Chrysler LeBaron was parked outside the pole barn. I grabbed the Glock out of my glovebox, then got out to check the inside of the car. Sassy Blaze lay in the backseat, looking dazed. I opened the door to make sure she was alive. Her pulse registered slow, and shaking her didn’t awaken her.
“You’ve got bigger problems than Miss Witchy-Pants there.”
I cracked my head on the door frame of the car and a stream of vanilla scent invaded my olfactory. “Good Gods, Jenna. Give me a little warning.” I sneezed.
“Crazed Gun-Slinger Darla is inside, waving a gun at Kendra’s head. She wants to know where Bertellia and Estevez are.”
I ran to the back-porch door and quietly let myself inside. Female voices.
Jenna stood at the open doorway, leading into the great room. She waved me closer then placed a finger to her mouth for quiet.
I peeked inside. Darla. Her eyes crazed and hair wild, she reminded me of a psychopath.
“You’ll make quite the vessel, or you’ll end up dead weight. We’ll see how good your ability really is, Miss Kendra Spark. You’ve been a real sliver in my spine, and I will never forgive you for the annoyance you’ve been to Bertellia and Estevez. I can no longer reach them, so you’ll have to share what you’ve done to silence them. What sort of prison have you confined them in?” Darla’s voice came across shrill, heavy on the southern accent, I’d never heard her sound like that before.
I stepped inside the house. Kendra sat on the couch, staring toward the fireplace. Darla, eyes wide, stood behind her, pointing a gun at Kendra’s head, and then they both looked my way.
“Well, Mr. Knight, you’re finally here. Miss Kendra remains pretty much speechless, so I’m hoping you can answer my questions about where Bertellia and Estevez have gone.” Darla waved her gun at me, her arm jerky and wild, then she pointed it back at Kendra. Darla’s fingers squeezed Kendra’s shoulder. “Where are they?” A grimace of malice crossed Darla’s face, something else from her I’d never witnessed.
“What’s happened to you, Darla?” I shook my head, holding my weapon down at my side, out of view. “Did your aunt do something to influence this behavior? Why are you talking with an accent? That’s not you at all.”
“I’m going to shoot this woman if you don’t tell me what I want to know. For the last time, where’s Bertellia and Estevez?” Her eyes narrowed to slits, and her lips pinched into a snarl. Her grip tightened on the pistol held at Kendra’s temple.
Jenna screamed, “Her tells say she’s gonna do it, Derek.”
The house phone rang, startling Darla. Kendra dropped sideways onto the couch cushions. I took that moment to aim and shoot. I hit Darla’s shoulder. Her gun flew to the floor in front of the sofa, and she fell backward with a thud. I rushed the couch and vaulted over the top, landing next to her. She lay on the floor with her eyelids fluttering, the bullet entered on the right side just below her collar bone. I gently rolled her to see the backside. The wound looked like a through-and-through. I pressed my hands on both sides of her body to staunch the blood flow.
Suddenly, a dark shadow in the form of a blurry faceless mannequin emerged from Darla’s body and ran toward the open porch doorway. Darla passed out in my arms, and the shadow disappeared.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with S. Peters-Davis . . .

SPD: Hello, Book Junkie Interview! I’m excited to be here with you today, and thank you for hosting an interview with me. I’m looking forward to spending the day with you and everyone that comes to visit.

How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?
SPD: Messy? *grins*
I write paranormal, suspense-thriller, romance in one person’s point of view (first-person - one at a time as I usually have the hero and heroine’s viewpoints, and not so often a villain gets his/her point of view or a secondary story-star gets a bit part) all written in past-tense. I would consider it creative, and once in a while, narrative with consistent inner thoughts throughout the story.

Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you?
SPD: This question made me smile. I’ve been at the craft of writing for years, so you would think it would flow naturally for me now. But I’m continuing to hone my process. Right now, I have a better system of writing for my next book than I did for Oblivious. I am slowly ingraining habits that allow my writing to flow with fluidity, a process that keeps me rolling, unblocked, and excited. I’ve read many books on structure, plotting, and outlining, and they all have something that resonates with me. There are several different systems, and I’m closer to figuring out mine with each book:) I love writing stories, and every time I figure out a new step that helps smooth out my story-writing process, I’m ecstatic.

What mindset or routine do you feel the need to set when preparing to write (in general, whether you are working on a project or just free writing)?
SPD: First off, mornings are my best writing time. I start at 5:00 a.m. and will go until 3:00 p.m. most days, taking half-hour breaks for food. I light my salt lamp, a candle, and listen to African Tapestries music by Hennie Bekker. I have three main areas of my house that I roost: a corner of our bar room (which is a semi-basement level family room) with big windows and a walk-out sliding glass door; a corner in my living room; or at a big round table in my four-season room. My mood determines where I go…or my husband does if he’s watching television;)

I have deadlines, and I’ve learned enough about my writing-self to know I need to edit my previous chapter from the day before and then crank out a new one every day that I write. The edit gets me ramped up to complete the next chapter, and that works for me.

Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each character all the way through to the page? Do you people watch to help with development? Or do you build upon your character during story creation?
SPD: All of the above play a part, for sure. For my character sketch, I’m always finding more thought-provoking questions to ask my characters, and I take my time giving the main story-stars a vivid history, most notably the villains. So then, the hero and heroine evolve throughout the story.

Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character(s)? If so, which one(s)?
SPD: This question made me consider each novel I’ve written. For all of them, I’ve bonded with the “group” or “team” players, not just the hero and heroine, but have included the secondary story-stars. I adore their support for each other and their growth individually and together. I feel like a cheerleader on the sidelines:)

Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?
SPD: I’m working on Ghost Guardians, and have decided this book will be the first in the Ghost Guardians Series. This novel is a rewrite of a young adult book in DK Davis’ (my dissolved pseudonym) Secret Series, each story a stand-alone novel. Ghost Guardians is a  New Adult book, with an older perception of life, including evolving relationships, and more steam. *smiles* I adored these characters and am excited to announce this upcoming New Adult paranormal romance series full of suspense, mystery, and mayhem…and lots of ghosts:)
Here’s the blurb for Ghost Guardians:
Bri’s intent—to work for her father, but ghosts, an old high school sweetheart, a downtrodden best bud, and a deceitful tormenter play havoc with her future.
Kyle broke it off with Bri before college but realizes he still harbors unrequited feelings for her. Then he discovers Bri’s ability and wants to keep her close, not just for himself, but as an asset for Spectral Paranormal Investigations.
Ghosts rely on Bri, Kyle confuses her, the best bud requires stability, and the bully deserves a punch in the face until they join forces on a mission to rescue the paranormal—those spirits left behind. Murder, mystery, and mayhem abound…in ghost-form?!

Fang-tuary
A short story by S. Peters-Davis

I opened my eyes to darkness and waited for my vision to adjust. My head throbbed with pain. I slid my fingers across the back of my skull, over a wet lump. Now the sticky stuff coated my fingertips. Blood. Great. The full moon gave the forest a glimmer, enough for me to make out the shapes around me. I could hear my mother’s voice inside my head, “Lexi, why would you ever go on a bus tour alone? Don’t you know how dangerous it is for a woman your age?”
Why in the hell was I on the ground, and where was the tour group? I’d heard something behind me right before my lights went out. Someone had hit me, hard enough to knock me out and leave a boulder-sized growth. Someone from the tour group? The grumpy dude that had sat beside me on the bus? Not likely, although I was sure he didn’t let the tour guide know I’d gone missing. Why that woman guide didn’t take a head-count each time we re-boarded the bus, I would never understand.
A wolf howled, and then a few more followed, echoing through the trees from different directions. I stood, deciding to head toward the cave, the last point of interest the guide had shown us.
An owl hooted not far from me, and I wondered if it was the one the guide had pointed out on our night tour - Creatures of the Night at the Hiawatha Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
My cellphone had remained in my back pocket, so I grabbed it out and no signal. The light on it brightened my uphill trek back to the cave. The wolves howled like they were honing in on me, my neck hairs stood up every time one of them shouted-out.
The cave opening appeared, ominous, a big dark yawning mouth. But something caught the light as I climbed closer. A small cage hung from the ceiling just inside. Movement. What the heck is inside that thing. I got underneath it and beamed the cell light upward.
“Hey, don’t suppose you could break me out of this contraption. Could you?” asked a hoarse, weak male voice.
I stared at the little beady eyes above me. A bat? I glanced around the inner cave, looking for the man who’d spoken to me. Goosebumps climbed up my arms and down my spine like frisky spiders. “Um, hello?” Again, I scanned the interior as far back as the light shined.
“There’s a rope. Attached to the north wall. If you’d please simply release it.”
I had no clue which wall was north, so I let the cell light guide me. “Okay. Yes, I found it. But I’m not dropping the cage with a bat until you show yourself and tell me why you would want this winged creature freed.” Really, why would an injured man care about a friggin’ bat?
“I’m the one in the cage. No one else is in the cave, just me. But if I don’t get released from this cage, I’ll die as soon as the sun comes up.”
“Is this some kind of sick joke. The rest of the bus tour is here watching me act out a prank?” I checked the interior and noticed nothing different than before. I glared at the beady-eyed tiny beast. “Okay.” I shined the light on it. “Speak to me while I’m watching you.” And yes, now I definitely passed as an idiot.
“The cage is iron, I’m paralyzed. I can’t move my head. Please trust me when I say, you’ll be a rich woman if you’d let the cage down and pull me out of this apparatus.” This time he came across as impatient, bossy.
I untied the rope, and the cage crashed to the floor. “Oh, my gods!” For a small cage, it slammed to the ground like a three-ton truck. I rushed over, throwing the light around inside the cage. Blood dripped from the bat’s mouth. Its eyes closed. Holy smack-down, batman, I killed it.

I lifted the latch and swung the door open. The bat never moved. I ripped the bottom of my shirt off and wrapped my hands, and then slowly hauled the little guy out. “I’m so sorry.”
Suddenly, growls from the doorway yanked any sorrow away, and instantly, my heart hammered so hard I knew it would explode. The wolves, mouths gaping and eyes glowing, stood in the cave opening. All eyes focused on the creature I held in my hands.
“I don’t think these dudes are your friends, little guy.” I lifted my head and turned toward the backend darkness of the cave, and then shouted, “Hey, mister, now would be a good time to come out from wherever you are and scare these puppies away.”
The wolves, unit-style, stepped toward me. I lay the small critter behind me, and why I felt compelled to save it, I had no idea. I stood, remembering not to act afraid, although I was sure the smell of my fear filled the air around us. Two wolves stopped and allowed the middle one to step closer to me. It stood as tall as my chest.
Its mouth moved in sync, “Move or die,” sounding just like the grumpy man that had sat beside me in the tour bus.
“Are you kidding me?” I stammered.
All the wolves glared at me.
“This is a nightmare!” I rolled my eyes at them and glared back.
Their foreheads crinkled, like a frown, and they looked at each other and then back at me.
I laughed, not just a little bitty chuckle, but an all-out hysterical fit erupted. My vision blurred from the moisture gathering, and still, I couldn’t stop. I’m going to die. I peered through the mist at those fanged killers and realized they hadn’t moved. Their feet pranced, and they eyed each other, but they didn’t come any closer. I gave my last chuckle and nearly choked when something bumped into my back. A shiver quaked through me, almost knocking me to my knees, but arms caught my waist, setting me toward the wall. I turned to see the injured man from inside the cave, but his stormy gray eyes held me captive for a moment as heated waves created a tsunami ripping through my insides. And then I perused the goods, only wearing a pair of denim jeans. There wasn’t anything wrong with the exterior of his masculine physic.
He smiled, flashing a couple gleaming white fangs, and then said, “You may want to close your eyes for this part.” He spun away from me so fast, I couldn’t follow his movement.
I blinked my eyes, but focusing remained distorted, even with the full moon shining inside the cave. Grunts, growls, yips, and barks echoed off the walls. Until, it didn’t, and everything went silent.
Nothing stood at the cave opening, the wolves had disappeared. I shined my cell on the floor where I’d left the tiny bat, only the material of my shirt lay there. I turned, ready to hike the distance to town.
A shadow filled the doorway. “I’m Seth, and I intend to make good on the trust-promise, Ms….” He reached his hand toward me, and I grasped it.
“Lexi…Lexi Conway.” I glanced up, meeting his mesmerizing smolder, and parts of me melted. And more parts melted when his lips found mine.
