BOOK BLITZ w/EXCERPT - CONTEMPORARY MM - RED (House of Misfits, #5) by Cambria Hebert

Red
House of Misfits, #5
by Cambria Hebert
Publication date: March 18th 2022
Genres: MM romance, Romantic suspense, contemporary romance, modern fairytale (Red Riding Hood)

BLURB

Once upon a time…

An orphaned boy runs away, knowing he is better off in solitude
than in the company of those with whom he does not belong.
However, Little Red is not meant to be alone,
his crimson halo a calling card to those far and wide.
And so off he goes… into the woods to attract the eye of a wicked wolf.

Better to see you with.
Better to hear you with.
Better to taste you with.

Astoundingly, the woods are not a frightening place,
and Little Red flourishes among the weeds and thorns until he isn’t so little anymore.
And the wicked wolf he’s gone to catch?
Well, this forest has more than one, and perversely,
their snapping teeth and sharp claws make him feel at home.
Years after walking into the woods, Red is expected to walk back out,
carrying with him the head of the most dangerous predator.

But those who sent him into the forest failed to take into
account that not everyone fears the bite of the big bad wolf.
Some crave it…

RED is book 5 in the House of Misfits series by Cambria Hebert. RED is a Male/Male romance modern version of Red Riding Hood. RED contains dark themes, a Korean Gangster, Opposites attract, Secrets and Twists, Hurt/Comfort, Possessive/Obsessive and Found Family. Oh, and of course spicy times. Please also note there are mentions of off-page child abuse some readers may find uncomfortable.

RED is the final book in this series and would be a more enjoyable experience if the other books were read first. If you read it on its own previous plots and storylines do come into play in this book and therefore may be spoiled.

EXCERPT:

Beau

Not even the noise-canceling headphones could drown out his shout. My fingers paused in flying over the keyboard but resumed when nothing else followed.

A moment later, he yelled again. I glanced up out of the blue-toned bubble the monitors always surrounded me with. He was not a peaceful sleeper. I normally ignored him, but tonight I couldn’t. Tonight he was annoying me more than usual.

Shoving back one side of the headphones, I listened anew.

“No,” he wailed, and something twisted in my gut.

I tossed the headphones onto my desk, moving out from behind my setup, adjusting the beanie I wore as I strode toward the bedroom. Pushing open the door without knocking, I folded my arms over my chest in the doorway.

“Hey,” I called.

He seemed too big for the bed as he thrashed around, breathing heavily and muttering too low for me to understand.

Sighing, I stepped into the dark room out of the light spilling in from the living room. His forehead was damp with a sheen of sweat, his messy dark hair matted in it.

“Wake up,” I intoned, still staring down.

His body stilled for a brief moment, making me think I’d managed to wake him. “I’m trying to work,” I bitched, turning away.

A keening sound filled the room, followed by a broken sob. Footsteps faltering, I turned back, realizing he was still trapped wherever he was. The pain etched in his features made my chest tight, and a sudden need to comfort had me leaning over him.

“Daeshim,” I called.

His face softened just a bit, and it made something inside me ease.

“Daeshim.” I called out to him again, this time reaching out to tap his cheek.

He moved so fast I didn’t even realize what was happening until I was on my back, pinned beneath him. The mattress was soft, but maybe it only felt that way because the body pinning me in place was rock hard.

“What the hell are you doing?” I grunted, trying to shove him off.

His eyes snapped open, but there was no one home. An uneasy feeling wormed around inside me, my fight-or-flight response coming in hot.

I shoved at his shoulders again, watching his face contort in menace. Daeshim was basically a gangster. A criminal and an asshole. He was also my roommate. I’d never been scared of him.

But as his hands shot out, locking around my neck to squeeze, fear bloomed.

I opened my mouth to yell at him, but all that came out was a strangled sound. Panic assaulted me, bursting over everything else and making me feel like I was fighting even though all my physical movements stopped.

Get it together! A voice demanded inside me, effectively stopping the absolute control of the panic.

Grunting, I twisted under him, but his weight pushed me harder into the bed.

Wheezing and eyes bulging, I grappled at his arms, digging my nails into them, trying to pry away his hands.

The set of his mouth was grim, and his eyes glittered with that creepy, empty, nobody’s-home look.

“Dae—” I wheezed, twisting and slapping his arm. “Daeshim.”

He blinked, and I was able to drag in some air before he started strangling me anew. He was in there.

I just have to

The thought cut off as spots started to swim before my eyes. It was do or die. Literally.

Letting my body go lax under his, I put every last bit of effort into the fist I clenched at my side.

Then, just before this asshole overpowered me, I launched a right hook into the side of his head.

Excerpt from Merry Misfits
Featuring Earth and Virginia

VIRGINIA

Hands sliding beneath my arms, he lifted me out of the wheelchair like I weighed nothing, holding me up so my paralyzed legs and feet dangled over the floor. His arms didn’t even tremble with the effort, and I knew it was because he’d been lifting weights.

“He touch you?” he asked, eyes all squinty.

“I’d have brained him!”

His lips twitched. “You okay?”

I rolled my eyes. “He’s hardly the first person to ever say mean things to me.”

He jolted. “Who else was mean to you?”

I patted his shoulder. “No one.”

“I should have killed him.”

“You can’t kill people at Christmas.”

“So I can kill him after New Year’s?” I could see him already plotting in that villainous head of his.

“No. You promised.”

His whole face softened. “I know, sprite. Why do you think I went so easy on him?”

“You broke his nose,” I pointed out.

“‘Tis the season.”

EXCERPT:

“How long has it been since you’ve had a shower?”

“Are you saying I stink?” I yelled.

“Yes,” she deadpanned.

I drew back, shock rendering me silent.

“Damn. Is that all I had to do to get you to shut up all this time? Just tell you, you stink?”

I low growl vibrated my throat. It hurt, but I didn’t stop.

Her eyes rolled. Their color was beautiful, reminding me of roasted chestnuts from street vendors around the holidays.

I wondered if I’d even be able to walk the street this year. My face would probably scare everyone.

“I’m asking because now that your bandages and stitches are removed, it would be a good time to shower off before I re-cover it all.”

“I haven’t had a shower since before. Only a couple sponge baths.” Then a piece of the old me slipped out, a piece I’d thought had been gone for good. Leaning in with a slight smirk and naughty whisper, I asked, “You offering to give me a sponge bath?”

Without missing a beat, she also leaned in. “I guess I am.”

The messy room fell away, and for a moment, I forgot I was a hideous, exposed beast overwhelmed with discomfort and cast aside by the people I’d trusted. All that remained was a pair of hickory eyes regarding me with sassy mirth. Her crimson-stained lips pursed, and my eyes lingered upon them, suddenly so incredibly hungry. Unlike mine, her skin was flawless, smooth, and richly pigmented.

She’s beautiful.

The long column of her neck was graceful and always exposed because the curls on her head were short and wild. My fingers itched to wrap around it, gripping with just enough force to possess her while my mouth devoured hers.

“What’s the matter, Ander? Not used to someone calling your bluff?” Her voice was amused but hushed, and something deep inside me howled in delight that she might not be as composed as she portrayed.

I leaned closer, noting the way her nostrils flared. We were so close now we shared the same breath. Hers smelled faintly of mint and was more rapid than before. “Who said I was bluffing?” I whispered.

Her cheeks turned slightly reflective, taking on a glossy sheen, and she pulled back, eyes flaring just a bit. She was flustered.

EXCERPT:

“Is that your car?” she exclaimed. Her wheelchair halted in the middle of the sidewalk as she gaped at the vintage black Dodge Charger at the curb.

If most people—okay, literally any people—were to exclaim at my car like that, I’d be tempted to leave tread marks on their forehead as I sped off on the way to not giving a flying fuck.

But Virginia wasn’t any people. She was Neo’s little sister. So I bit back the biting reply to scratch behind my ear. “Well, I know it’s not exactly the cushy SUV Neo probably uses—”

“It’s way better!” Her arms flung up over her head in excitement. As they dropped, she rotated at the waist to find me with sparkling chestnut eyes. “Can I drive?”

It took me a heartbeat to digest the fact she liked the car and then another to realize she just asked to drive. Cheeky.

“Nobody drives my car but me.” I scowled.

Her lashes batted. “But I’m a really good driver.”

A con artist. Just like her brother.

“Don’t listen to her. She just ran over old Mr. Donaldson’s foot last week. The man acted like he was dying for days,” Emogen cracked from near the entrance to the Tower.

“Such a drama queen,” Virginia muttered. “He was wearing shoes.”

My lips curled inward so the scowl I favored so much couldn’t morph into a smile.

“Besides. It’s this clunky thing’s fault.” V patted the side of her wheelchair. “It’s clearly not as superb as this.” Her hands spread wide as if introducing the car.

“You wouldn’t be able to reach the pedals,” I told her on my way past to open up the passenger door.

A sound of horror filled the air. “How dare you discriminate against me because I’m short!”

I couldn’t help it. I smiled. Good thing I was facing inside the car when it happened. Wiping it off my face, I spun back, boots stomping over the uneven pavement as I closed the distance between us.

I didn’t like the way she craned her neck to stare up at me, and before I’d realized it, I’d dropped into a crouch in front of her chair, bringing us to eye level.

A little fissure of surprise flickered in her expression, but it was gone before I could really grasp hold.

Leaning in, I whispered, “I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but… your legs don’t work.”

A delicate, small-fingered hand with yellow-painted nails flew up to cover her mouth. The shock pouring from her eyes made me frown. Had I gone too far?

A prickle of unfamiliar conscience stung the back of my neck, and my tongue started to move in apology before my lips even parted. “V—”

A little giggle bubbled out around the hand pressed against her lips.

My stare whipped up. Her eyes were glimmering, not with upset… but with humor.

More giggles burst out, and her narrow shoulders shook with it. A summer breeze blew down the street, tugging at a long strand of hair that had come loose from the braids she always wore. It wiggled around behind her like it, too, was laughing.

Her hand dropped, revealing a warm smile. “I missed you.”

Pause.

Those words were like a magic wand, the kind so powerful that, with just one flourish, it could put everything to sleep around you. Suddenly, the obnoxious city quieted. The scent of garbage always lingering in the streets disappeared. My fingers curled into my palms, tightening my hands into fists.

And so a fairy tale is woven, two worlds colliding, secrets revealed, love everlasting…

And a realization that not all fairy tales require a princess.

*Prince is a modern fairy tale forgoing heteronormativity to boldly state that fairy tales are for everyone, no matter who you love (or don’t).

EXCERPT:

Head bowed toward the violin, his hair looked like spun golden thread as it swayed with every note he played. Familiarity rippled through me, but I didn’t think it through. I couldn’t think about anything just then. All I could do was feel.

The tune moved me. It felt as if actual pieces inside my chest were being rearranged and adjusted according to this melody. As if this boy who played this song knew exactly where pieces of me belonged and he would arrange them so I wouldn’t have to.

Emotion so stark and overwhelming punched me. I actually bent a little at the waist. Tears sprang to the corners of my eyes, but I held them at bay.

Absolutely entranced. Absolutely owned.

Absolutely besotted by the sound of this boy.

I didn’t even know a person had a sound. A song unique to only them. But now that I’d heard, it seemed to be so obvious because no one else could possibly ever sound like him.

This went far beyond the sound of a voice or even a whisper against your ear.

This was… This was the sound of someone’s heart.

In my chest, my heart pounded, thumping heavily and slow but so powerful that breath was hard to draw.

I stood there listening, not really breathing. Not really seeing. But totally alive and aware with senses I’d never used before.

When the last note was played, it hovered thick like the air after a heavy rainstorm. It caressed my nerves with small aftershocks, stroking them as if they were trying to build a memory.

As if I could ever forget.

EXCERPT:

She looked like someone who’d just stepped out of a storybook. Nothing about her belonged here in my world.

Even though her clothes were casual, they were far too upscale for this place. The fabric was delicate and soft just like her limbs and the way she walked. Her round blue eyes scoured every inch of the place as though she had never been anywhere like this before.

And the hood. The royal-blue hood pulled up over her head was like a cloak, shrouding her in mystery and concealing so much more than just her features.

When I finally got a glimpse of her creamy white skin, I had to force myself not to react. She didn’t look like anyone from my world either. Not her heart-shaped face, perfectly formed chin, or red-rose lips formed in a bow. A few strands of hair so dark lay against her cheek, and I could only think of black velvet.

That mouth, though. The standoffish, almost haughty way she looked at me, it didn’t really match. Like the storybook she stepped out of had a beautiful cover and artwork, but the interior words were aggressive and messy.

She’s scared.

It became more and more apparent the longer I sat beside her. She felt backed into a corner, into this bar, which was clearly out of her comfort zone. I understood that. I could even make allowances for her aloof, unfriendly behavior.

I was interested. Definitely intrigued.
