BLURB
Ava Larsen has spent her adult life trying to outrun the shadow of the girl she used to be: a bully whose mistake cost her sister’s life, and one who pushed away a boy they both loved. But her redemption is cut short when her latest investigation into a high-profile money laundering ring turns deadly.

After surviving a brutal kidnapping, Ava’s only hope for survival is Michael Gonzalez, a Secret Service Agent fueled by a decade of bitterness. Mike doesn’t believe Ava has changed, and he certainly hasn’t forgiven her for the accident that killed his first love. But with a corrupt government official determined to silence her, Mike is ordered to protect her at all costs.

From the streets of New York to the corridors of power in Washintong D.C., the two are hunted by an enemy that will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried. As the investigation reaches a breaking point, Mike and Ava must navigate a minefield of political betrayal and personal trauma. In a race against time, they’ll have to trust each other to survive—or let the sins of their past bury them both.

Excerpt:
“Get to the point. What’s up?”
She sighed. “I don’t even know where to start.” The watch on her wrist buzzed with a notification. She checked it, and her mouth tightened into a thin line. “This case looks to be seriously fucked up. Not a whole lot to tell you right now other than there were several, and I mean we’re talking numbers in the teens, bodies found in this old house. Owner is this guy everyone said was super quiet, always kept his yard clean, etcetera, etcetera. From what the neighbors are saying, no one would have thought any of the horrors we’ve found were happening in this house. Talking victims, all women, completely cut up. Sometimes methodically so. As if he had all the time in the world to do the perfect job.”
Mike grimaced. “This is why I do protection and white-collar fraud. I could never sit through those forensic shows you and Dwayne used to watch.”
Charlie threw him a saucy smile, then went serious again. “Early this morning, a woman actually got out of the house. Naked as the day she was born. Ran a few houses down and collapsed on the porch but not before she rang the doorbell.”
The mental image she painted had him wincing. “Jesus. Is she okay?”
Charlie took a deep breath and let it out super slow as if she was preparing for something. He braced, suddenly feeling a sense of foreboding. Whatever she was about to say was going to mess him up entirely. That’s why she’d been taking for-fucking-ever to get to the point. It’s why she was here in person instead of calling him on the phone. It’s why Dwayne had sent her. She’d always had ways of calming Mike down, even under the tensest of situations.
Except for that one time. He shook his head, refusing to think about that now. It’d been years since he’d seen her.
“Who was the woman?” he asked, his voice rough. But he knew. The answer was written all over Charlie’s face, from the grimace to the pity stamped across her faery features.
“The woman was Ava.”
Her name spoken was like someone socked him in the gut. He let out a rush of air, expelling oxygen immediately, as if it needed a place to escape. Kind of like his body was fighting to do, too. It was amazing how one’s body reacted to news or the presence of someone who’d made part of their life hell. That whole fight-or-flight response was true, and as he thought of the Ava of his childhood, and both the sister and the murderer of the first woman he loved, his body was warring with itself, trying to figure out which response it wanted to go with.
The urge to flee was so strong, he actually took a step back. Charlie’s knowing gaze sharpened on him, and she sighed, the sound coming out with a lot of pity he didn’t need. It only served to piss him off.
“Look, maybe we can find someone else,” Charlie said, shaking her head, then did a double take at something over his shoulder and tossed a glare at the women still admiring them from afar. “Those fucking women…”
It was at that moment his mother decided to make an appearance and came storming out of the house having found her shoes. His normally very demure mom looked spitting mad, her red face a mask of irritation and anger.
“Shit,” he said.
Charlie chuckled low, following the path his Ma took to the garden hose, who then bent and turned the water on.
“Shit,” he said again, ignoring Charlie’s outright laughter now. He started toward Ma, intent on intercepting her before she could open the hose up on the neighbors. He knew her plan almost as if she’d put an announcement in the paper. “You could help, you know,” he said to Charlie.
She crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head. “Not a chance. This is the best entertainment I’ve had in ages. Come on, don’t be a spoilsport. Let Karen teach those hens a lesson.”
He picked up his pace to a jog as his Ma started across the lawn, her intent now screamingly clear. That the ladies hadn’t moved and were still watching on with faces of various bemusement was baffling. “Ma,” he called. “Come on now, don’t.”
“Michael James,” she said, and he winced. “Go put a shirt on. I’m about to teach the girls some manners.”
Standing behind her in the doorway was his father in a similar pose as Charlie had been, crossed arms and a smile stamped across his face.
“Pops, come on,” he called. “Don’t just stand there.”
Daniel Gonzalez shook his head, his chest moving with a chuckle Mike couldn’t hear. “I’m not getting in the middle of this. Anyone want some popcorn?”
He reached his mother just as she lifted the hose and pointed, then squeezed the handle, causing a spray of what had to be icy cold water shoot out and over the women sitting along the edge of the lawn. Shrieks and screams lit up the neighborhood before he could grab the nozzle and push it down. The smile on his mother’s face was the loudest of them all.
“That should teach them,” she said, and he sighed.
Approximately thirty minutes later, Mike took a deep breath, calling on patience and strength, the confidence he’d grown as he went through weeks of training at FLETC and the Secret Service Training Academy. His hands were sweating like they normally did when he did any kind of public speaking, something he’d been struggling for years to overcome. If he’d been in the gym he normally went to, he’d be able to put some chalk on his hands to soak up the moisture, but as it was, all he could do was rub them on his light-wash 501s.
After his mother had doused the neighborhood watch ladies with water earlier, he’d gone inside to change and had put on jeans and a pale baby-blue button-down. He was by no means wanting to impress the woman on the other side of the door, but he couldn’t escape the feeling driving inside of him. The one that told him he wasn’t a young teen able to be pushed around anymore. That he couldn’t care less what she thought of him.
But all of that was a lie, and he knew it. He just refused to admit it.
Ava Larsen had an impact on his life and who he’d grown to become.
He was here at the hospital at his brother’s request to consult on a case, apparently. There was nothing saying he had to spend any length of time with her at all. He’d listen to what his brother had to say, would hear her version of events, then he’d make a recommendation for what they should do next. That was it.
With another deep, calling-on-calm breath, he pushed and held the door open for Charlie, keeping his eyes downcast as she entered. He blew out a breath through pursed lips, then stepped inside and lifted his gaze to meet the sky-blue ones of his childhood bully.

BLURB
The Heart of Chenoa is a heartwarming tale about a young woman's courage to leave her abusive boyfriend and start a new life in a new town. Along the way, she finds a group of misfit friends who become like family to her, including the inseparable siblings Brooke and Jerald, and the popular but conflicted JC, who harbors a secret love for Jerald. As they navigate high school drama and personal trauma, they come together to seek revenge against a conniving classmate, and ultimately learn to embrace their unique gifts and find strength in their bond.

The story explores themes of love, friendship, betrayal, and redemption as the characters navigate their way through the ups and downs of life. Brooke's premonitions and Lucille's powers add a touch of magic to the story, while Jerald learns to control his trauma-induced alter ego. Ultimately, they discover that they have grown and evolved in unexpected ways and that their bond is stronger than anything life can throw at them.

Excerpt:
Amidst the sprawling fields of Chenoa, a small town nestled in the heart of the Texas, a tale of resilience and friendship unfolds. At its core lies the story of a young woman named Indigo, whose journey from darkness to light weaves a tapestry of courage, love, and the transformative power of friendship.
Indigo had known no other reality than the one she shared with her abusive boyfriend, Troy. The shackles of fear bound her tightly, choking the life out of her dreams. But one fateful night, fueled by a flicker of courage ignited deep within her heart, she made the decision to break free.
With nothing but a few belongings and a trembling resolve, Indigo set out on a journey to start anew in a town where nobody knew her name. Chenoa welcomed her with open arms, offering sanctuary from the storm that had raged within her for far too long.
As Indigo tentatively navigated the unfamiliar school of her new home, she stumbled upon a group of misfits whose warmth and acceptance enveloped her like a comforting embrace. Among them were Brooke and Jerald, inseparable siblings whose laughter echoed through the halls of Chenoa High School, and JC, whose inner turmoil simmered beneath his charming exterior.
Together, they formed an unlikely family, bound not by blood but by the unbreakable ties of friendship and shared experiences. Each member of their motley crew bore scars of their own, but together, they found solace in the company of kindred spirits.
As high school dramas unfolded and personal traumas resurfaced, Indigo and her newfound companions stood united against the tide of adversity. They rallied together to seek justice against a conniving classmate, their bonds growing stronger with each shared victory.
But beneath the surface of their idyllic friendship lay secrets waiting to be unearthed. JC harbored a love for Jerald that dared not speak its name, while Brooke's premonitions whispered of futures yet to unfold. And in the shadows, Jerald battled with the demons of his past, struggling to tame the beast within.
Yet through it all, they clung to each other, their hearts intertwined in a tapestry of love and loyalty. As they confronted their deepest fears and embraced their unique gifts, they discovered that strength lies not in solitude but in the unbreakable bonds of friendship.

In The Heart of Chenoa, amidst the Spanish moss trees and the whispering winds, Indigo and her friends learned that the greatest battles are fought not with fists but with hearts open wide. And as they embraced the magic woven into the fabric of their lives, they found redemption in the unlikeliest of places: within themselves, and within the hearts of those they held dear.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with . . . Creole Noir . . .

How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?
I'd describe my writing style as a mix of Southern Gothic, weird, eerie, and mysterious elements. I like to dive into topics that might be seen as taboo, especially focusing on black culture. Southern Gothic influences my work, bringing in themes of decay, redemption, and the strange. But I also love adding layers of mystery and suspense with the weird and eerie stuff. I'm all about exploring the darker side of life and human nature, pushing boundaries to create stories that make you think.

The Black Dove series is inspired by the writing style of the alternative goth community. It captures the vibe of the gothic subculture, embracing darkness, deep thinking, and going against the norm. Just like gothic fashion mixes dark elegance with rebellion, the series mixes mystery, darkness, and supernatural elements. Characters go on journeys through mysterious worlds, digging into their feelings and finding hidden truths. Like the alternative goth community, the series challenges rules, talks about topics others might avoid, and celebrates being unique. It's a journey into a world where light and darkness blend, perfect for anyone who loves something a little different.

Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character(s)? If so, which one(s)?
One character from "The Heart of Chenoa" that I really connect with is Brooke. She's the kind of friend who lifts everyone's spirits with her positivity and support. Brooke has this amazing ability to brighten up the darkest of days. She's always there for her friends, offering a listening ear or a helping hand whenever they need it. Even when she's dealing with her own struggles, she puts others first.

What I love most about Brooke is how she handles the chaos in her life while also dealing with her developing powers. As she discovers her supernatural abilities, she faces fear and uncertainty. But instead of letting it overwhelm her, she faces it head-on with courage.

I find myself bonding with Brooke because she feels so real and relatable. Her strength and resilience inspire me, and her kindness reminds me of the importance of supporting those around me. So yes, Brooke is definitely one of my favorite characters in the book. She's someone I can't help but root for as she navigates the challenges of her journey.

Do you have a character that you have been working on that you can't wait to put to paper?
In one of the stories from the anthology book "Series of the Bizarre," there's a character named Moses who embarks on a journey of self-discovery that leads him to uncover his connection to the Nommo-sapiens. Moses, a young man grappling with feelings of alienation and otherness, finds himself drawn to the mysterious history of the Nommo people. As he delves deeper into their lore, he begins to uncover startling similarities between their experiences and his own.

The Nommo people, according to legend, are a race of beings who descended from the stars to impart wisdom and knowledge to humanity. However, their teachings were met with fear and rejection, leading to their eventual exile and isolation from human society. Similarly,  Moses has always felt like an outcast, never quite fitting in with those around him. His journey to uncover his connection to the Nommo people becomes a quest for identity and belonging, as he seeks to understand the significance of his heritage and the role  he plays in the larger tapestry of existence.

As Moses delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding the Nommo people, he begins to unlock latent abilities and insights that set him apart from those around him.

Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?
I'm in the process of creating a horror anthology called "Series of the Bizarre," deeply rooted in African American culture and ancestral lore. Each story draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of African American folklore, traditions, and myths, weaving together tales that reflect the essence of our heritage. Through this anthology, I seek to explore the depths of our cultural roots while delving into the eerie and mysterious. These tales dive into our rich traditions and myths, exploring our ancestral roots in a spooky way.

If you could go ANYWhere, money is not a concern, and spend one full year. Where would you go and what would you do with this time?
If I had the chance to go anywhere for a whole year, money no concern, I'd pick Charleston, South Carolina. It's got everything I love: amazing food, rich culture, and that eerie, Southern Gothic vibe.

First off, the food scene in Charleston is unbeatable. I'd spend my days trying out all the classic Southern dishes like shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, fried green tomatoes, rice stuffed fish, fried shark steak, and garlic crab. Every meal would be a new adventure!

Then, there's the Geechee culture, deeply rooted in the Lowcountry. I'd soak up as much as I could, attending events, visiting historical sites, and connecting with locals to learn about their traditions and history. It's a side of Charleston that's so unique and important.

And of course, Charleston's Southern Gothic atmosphere would be the perfect backdrop for my adventures. I'd wander through moss-covered trees, enjoy the scent of magnolia blossoms and saltwater from the nearby coast, visit the quiet corners of hidden gardens and secret courtyards and soak in the mysterious ambiance of the city. It's the kind of place that sparks creativity and imagination.

Overall, a year in Charleston would be an incredible journey of discovery and inspiration. It's a city that's steeped in history, culture, and delicious food, and I'd make the most of every moment.

Thank you Creole Noir for joining and giving a little insight to you and your process. Your work is appreciated. I may have to stop in Charleston this summer on my road trip through the South.

BLURB
Victory was only the beginning.

Prince Mayson Karrok of Astymere grew up hearing countless stories from the night of his birth. Whispers of murder and betrayal; of war and destruction, all at the hands of an emperor who wanted him dead before he could take his first breath. A night meant to being a peaceful conclusion to the Endless War would become known across the world as the Night of Knives. The scar he bears on his chest is a reminder of just how lucky he is to be alive.

But over a decade after his father, King Henry, killed that emperor and destroyed his empire, Mayson finds himself fighting to find his own way, fueled by the desire to both follow in his father’s footsteps, and to break free from his shadow to forge his own path.

Unbeknownst to Mayson, his father set in motion a chain of events that would come to rule his destiny. When he is forced to choose between love and duty, will Mayson have the will to do what is right? For he’ll need all the strength and support he can muster as enemies begin to surround him, both from outside Astymere, and from within.

Excerpt
Henry reached out to touch the doors, and the more he fought it, the more the voice of the Raelian emperor mocked him. Tell me, Henry. Does the boy look like you? Does the proud blood of the Avaari flow within him, or has your whore given him too much of her mark?
“Silence,” Henry said, turning from the doors to break the illusion. He nearly stumbled upon a line of burnt skeletons strewn across the floor. “One more word and your death will be slow, I swear it. You will curse the day you first drew breath.”
The illusion had been broken, but the voice remained. I wish to know the face of my enemy, Karrok. When we come together at last, I wish to know it well.
“You will never touch him! Do you hear? You will never lay your hands on him!” Henry swung about, striking at the source of the voice, but it came from within, as slippery and foul as pond scum. The Beast will have his day, Karrok. You know it. One by one, those you hold dear will fall under his might. Your wife, your mongrel—even your precious Rahm shall be consumed by the Second Flame. But first, they shall all weep for you. You shall mark the beginning of the end.
The voice dragged Henry back into his false vision, forcing him to once again see the devastation he could not prevent. The windows blew apart around him as fire rained from the sky, drenching the White City in blazing destruction that consumed flesh, stone, and steel. It seemed like minutes before Henry finally took control of himself and stood before the emperor on his balcony, overlooking the growing inferno, listening to the sounds of screams. Tiberian’s hands were outstretched, his arms spread wide. His smile was filled with what Henry could only describe as pure, unhinged madness as he gazed upon the burning city and laughed. Even after Rahmirion took Tiberian’s head from his shoulders, that smile remained—and the emperor’s laugh could not be silenced.

“Nooooo!” Henry bellowed into the empty corridor. The vision was gone, and so was the voice. Those words stayed with him for nearly twenty years, but he had never heard them so clearly. He had tried to forget the look of glee on Tiberian’s face as fire bled from an otherwise clear sky.

Authors Info
JONATHAN WELLS, lifelong fantasy and sci-fi lover, has been making up stories for as long as he can remember. Some have been scribbled on scraps of printer paper, others were left to just rattle around in his head. And that is exactly how this novel came to be.

The seeds for this epic fantasy were first planted in his 12-year-old brain, a day-dream world where he could wander off when school became too boring. After ten years, the daydream had taken on such a clear shape, with a linear plot and fully fleshed out characters, that he decided it was time to give it a proper “birth.”

After showing rough sketch of one of his characters to college roommate, DENNIS BRUZZI, his friend “wanted in,” and the rest is history. Dennis, a proven storyteller through his work in journalism and video production, is taking pen to paper for the first time in the fantasy realm. An avid reader and a fantasy enthusiast, he is ecstatic to have worked with his longtime friend to bring this unique and expansive story to life.

“And The Blood of a King is only the tip of the iceberg,” promise Jonathan and Dennis. There are eight more books planned in this epic fantasy series.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview . . .

  1. Writing is definitely an engrained process for us. Hardly anything ever “flows naturally”, and we believe that is true for most writers. Pulling words out of your head in order to paint a picture clear enough for someone else to see what you are seeing oftentimes feels like you are actually pulling teeth instead of words. Ernest Hemingway once said: There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter- and bleed.” We couldn’t agree more. That is why you have to be disciplined, and not let yourself be discouraged. One word at a time becomes one sentence at a time, and your progress begets more progress. Once you get going, it is so hard to stop. The opposite is also true. When you’ve gone a long while since you’ve worked on your project, as often is the case, since life can easily get in the way, getting your momentum going again can feel like trying to push a stalled car the last mile to the gas station.
  2. Dennis actually showed Jon the method he uses in order to help him get in the right headspace to write. We are both easily distracted, and keeping ourselves on course in the early days when we were first putting The Blood of a King together was an uphill battle. But Dennis learned that listening to wordless music, say classical music or the score of a film, can really help one focus. Jon uses it to this day, and it makes a marked difference on how much he is able to produce in one sitting. He also finds he focuses best when he is sitting at his desk, rather than some other, more comfortable spot, like the couch.
  3. We have a character that has been sitting on the bench, waiting for her chance to get on the field since the beginning. She will be our story’s Gandalf, our Dumbledore, our Moiraine type figure. We would have loved to get her into The Blood of a King, but there was simply nowhere in the narrative to squeeze her into, so we knew she would have to make her debut in book two. What really excites us about Teressa, as she will be named, is she provides the magical foil to our series’ main antagonist, while the rest of our main cast deal with more political/military problems. We are only now just beginning to play with her potential, and setting her down in book 2 will certainly be a cathartic moment.
  4. We are currently hard at work on a sequel to The Blood of a King, titled, The Dark Crown. Jon currently has a small list of first drafts that he has been working on, including a monster hunter story inspired by a trip he took to Ireland, a sci fi horror that is sort of a Predator meets The Village kind of story, while plotting out a classical ‘slay the dragon’ sort of fairytale, and a planned trilogy about a once-great wizard battling to escape the dark pits of alcoholism in order to save the world once more. Dennis is working on an original fantasy that involves secondary worlds crossing over with our own, and a historical fiction drama focusing on a survivor of 9/11.
  5. Our primary goal for this year is to spread awareness for The Blood of a King as much as possible while we work to get The Dark Crown ready. We have been meaning to try to release our sequel no later than this fall. We are in pretty good shape in that regard. If we can have a really strong summer and get a complete manuscript to our editor by September, we think we can do it. If we can release two books in the same year, we will take a much more relaxed pace going forward.
