‘Who exactly is Adam?’ I ask. ‘What’s this about, Sarah? And what the hell are you doing here? You, specifically. The Deputy Director doesn’t get her kitten heels dirty without reason. Timmy and Stu are big boys. They could have checked I’m safely tucked up by themselves. They didn’t need to bring their mum with them.’

                Tim glowers but Sarah laughs. ‘You’ve still got a tongue on you, Mel. I’ve missed it. Old place hasn’t been the same since you left.’

                ‘Left?’ I say. ‘Pushed out, you mean. By you, as I recall.’ The memory of Liam’s death and the trumped-up charges come back to me from where I’ve left them lying dormant for three years. I was responsible for two deaths, one of them a Russian under UK protection, the other my partner. Failing to call for support as required. Lying to a superior officer, apparently. Insubordination. And, finally, assault. OK, that last one was true, although if I’d really assaulted Five’s security chief, he’d have collected a few bruises and not just a slightly askew tie.

                ‘Leave us, please, Tim,’ says Sarah. She’s stopped laughing. Tim looks annoyed; he may think he’s more important than he is. Nevertheless, he rises and goes into the kitchen. His socks are red. We wait while he noisily puts his shoes on and leaves the house. He doesn’t quite slam the door behind him. It’s not a very professional performance but I say nothing.

                ‘You were never pushed out, Mel,’ starts Sarah. I’m about to remonstrate but she holds up a hand. ‘You ask me why I’ve come all the way out here to the back of beyond. This is why. You’re not going to like this but please bear with me until I’ve finished.’ She pauses. ‘You’ve never left the service.’ I say nothing. She’s asked me not to interrupt so I don’t. ‘Linden Harper is MI5. Was MI5, sorry. His so-called independent bureau has in fact always been just one of our little webs. As you have certainly discovered during the last two years, you’ve benefitted from rather more elastic boundaries than you had working from Thames House. Harper’s isn’t the only such offshoot. It suits us occasionally to be able to employ less formal methods than governmental rules dictate. And the paperwork is less scrutinised. That’s no bad thing, especially for me. I have far too much paperwork these days.’ She looks briefly wistful, perhaps remembering the more active days of her youth.

                ‘I discovered Harper by myself,’ I say. ‘His was the fourth outfit I applied to. He wasn’t easy to find. And I’d taken a year off first, as I imagine you know.’

                ‘You may believe you found him but the truth is often more complicated than you think. Nevertheless, however it happened, you were given a job. The other three companies had turned you down, yes?’

                ‘Are they Five too then?’

                ‘How hard were they to find?’ Not hard at all was the answer. My expression undoubtedly indicated my acknowledgement of that. ‘They’re all genuine. Legitimate private contractors. One’s gone bust. Not unusual in the current economic climate. I’m afraid the word was put around that you were, how can I put this? Toxic. No one was going to employ you.’

                ‘Only Harper.’ Despite myself, I’m smiling. ‘Devious old bastard.’

                ‘Him or me?’

                ‘Both of you.’ I remind myself that one devious old bastard is now dead. ‘So what now?’

                ‘Old boss, new boss, I’m afraid, my dear,’ she says, spreading her arms wide. ‘Welcome home.’

                ‘And what if I say no.’

                ‘You won’t. And not because you’re still toxic and your intelligence career would be over if you did. You could get a job as a barmaid, I guess. You’re a good-looking woman, after all, Mel, but you wouldn’t get to do the things you like doing. Maybe on a raucous Friday night but it wouldn’t be the same.’

Steve Sheppard was born and grew up in Surrey before moving to Buckinghamshire and then to Oxfordshire, where he spent a quarter of a century living in an idiosyncratic village that was the affectionate inspiration for his fourth book, Lazytown. He now lives in Hampshire. He spent forty years starting to write books but not finishing them, until belatedly realising that the key is not to give up. The other thing he has since learned is that he should have become a celebrity before writing a book, as this would have made selling it much easier. 

 False Connections is Steve’s fifth book, but the first one written as a straight thriller and not primarily as a comedy, although it does contain humour. He hopes it will be the first of a series featuring feisty, funny but flawed ex-MI5 agent, Mel Milano. He also has three spy thrillers with laughs to his name, all published by Claret Press: A Very Important Teapot (2019), set in Australia, Bored to Death in the Baltics (2021), not set in Australia, and Poor Table Manners (2024), which takes place in Cape Town.  These feature an initially fairly hapless hero, Dawson, and a considerably less hapless heroine, Lucy, together with varied supporting casts, most of whom are not who they claim to be. Steve’s fourth book is an out-and-out comedy-murder-mystery, Lazytown (2025).

Jennifer grabbed Liza’s arm. “Let’s go boogie!”

“I don’t know. It’s kind of crowded.”

Liza stood awkwardly, watching people bump into each other. “That’s the best though, people moving their bodies against you. No one cares if you can’t dance, you just move to the beat and have fun.”

Before Liza could respond, a different song came on, Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love,” making people cheer and dance faster than before.

“Oh my God! I love this song, come on!” Jennifer squealed.

Liza let Jennifer pull her onto the dance floor. At first, she wasn’t really dancing. She kept getting shoved and pushed as she stood in front of Jennifer, who automatically moved to the beat. She tried to mimic her friend’s movements, but she felt unsure of herself as she struggled to get the right rhythm. Jennifer must have noticed Liza’s efforts, as she turned Liza around and placed her hands on her hips to help guide her. The song’s beat got easier for Liza to follow as she heard Donna Summer’s voice hum from the speakers.

Liza relaxed as the alcohol coursed through her veins. She let her body move under Jennifer’s direction and stopped overthinking. Jennifer turned Liza back around to face her, moving their bodies closer. Jennifer reached into her pocket to show Liza a few pills in a small plastic bag. She still moved to the beat when she popped one in her mouth and then promptly kissed Liza, transfer-ring a piece of the pill from her tongue to Liza’s. When Jennifer pulled away, she smirked.

After a few moments, Liza threw her head back as she felt the drug take hold. She saw the disco ball spinning above her, and the multicolored lights flashing around the club. Her vision blurred, coming in and out of focus like a kaleidoscope. Jennifer was behind her again bumping and grinding, leaving no room between them. Liza’s heart rate sped up, and she felt sweat drip down her neck. It was hot on the dance floor. Although she was breathing heavily, she continued to dance, letting the beat take over her movements.

They danced for several more songs, each one faster than the last. Liza’s skin was slick from sweat.

Hunt knew the position of the munitions depot by heart; he could draw a map of the compound in his sleep.

He waited for the leader’s signal—a wolf’s howl.

When it came, Hunt fired the rocket, knees braced against the shock and sound, head buried in the crook of his arm, then hit the dirt as it arced toward the munitions dump.

Author Jonathan Harries' Literary Inspirations

A very good friend of mine writes a “book letter” every couple of months in which he reviews the thirty to forty books he’s consumed over the time period between letters. I say “consumed” because he reads books the way I eat potato chips. Most of them are murder mysteries and detective novels with the odd piece of historical fiction tossed in for good measure. Some of the books are dark with troubled protagonists, and others light and breezy and seemingly without much depth. Each book, however, is eminently readable in no more than a day or two and that, I have come to realize, is the single most important factor in what I choose to read. It feels, I’ll admit, very shallow and brainless, and yet I’d argue that it takes genius to write a novel that clips along like a racehorse warming up for the derby. Lee Goldberg is most certainly one of my favorite authors, and all his books fit that criterion. They’re funny, thrilling, and the dialogue never makes me wonder just who the hell would possibly talk like that. Emily Organ is another of my favorites, especially her Churchill and Pemberley mysteries. For me, that series epitomizes the idea of “settling in for a nice comfy read.” Two elderly detectives, one as focused on jam tarts and cherry buns as she is on finding the killer, in a bucolic country village inhabited by eccentrics. I’m in love with India and have some absolute favorite Indian authors, although it seems none of them actually lives in India. Vaseem Kahn (British) has a wonderfully entertaining series that features retired Mumbai police inspector Ashwin Chopra and a baby elephant named Ganesha. Balli Karr Jaswal (Singaporean) manages to be both funny and extremely poignant, which I think must be extremely hard to do, and yet she does it so amazingly well. The first Sujata Massey (American) novel I read was The Widows of Malabar Hill, and I couldn’t wait to read the follow up stories of Parveen Mistry, Bombay’s first female lawyer. I grew up reading H. Rider Haggard, whose most famous book – and rightfully so – is King Solomon’s Mines. I read the entire swashbuckling series in a week and repeat the process every few years. They ooze with adventure and intrigue, and though the bigotry that creeps in every so often is sad, it at least gives you an understanding of the nature of colonialism. I wish I had the attention span to attempt the books my wife reads: the best-selling, brilliantly reviewed tomes of our times. I always make the excuse that I’m living them, so why depress myself even further. It’s a weak and inane excuse as she points out, but I’m sticking to it.

I had absolutely no intention of getting into the family business. As I told my father the night he enlightened me on what my ancestors had been up to for over a thousand years, “Sticking a curved dagger into someone’s liver ain’t quite my cup of tea.” 

As it turned out, I had no choice. When your family’s been assassinating reprobates and other loathsome individuals for seventy generations, you have a certain obligation. 

So, while it was a little disconcerting to hear how dear old granny would have become a prostitute if Grandpa Joe hadn’t whacked one of Germany’s top agents just before the start of World War I, it certainly piqued my interest. Of course, as I discovered, prostitution and murder were pretty de rigueur for my family. 

After all, it was my great-grandfather who was hired by the British secret service to kill Jack the Ripper and my mother’s cousins who took part in the attempted assassination of Lenin. 

My only regret when I finally took up the family sica was not eliminating Jean-Bedel Bokassa just before he crowned himself Emperor of the Central African Empire and ate my two friends. 

But we all make mistakes.

   

Jonathan Harries began his career as a trainee copywriter at Foote, Cone & Belding in South Africa and ended it as Chairman of FCB Worldwide with a few stops in between. After winning his first Cannes Lion award, he was offered a job at Grey Advertising in South Africa, where he worked as a copywriter and ended up as CEO at age 29, just before emigrating to the US. Like most immigrants in those days, he started once again from scratch. After a five year stint as Executive Creative Director of Hal Riney in Chicago, he was offered a senior position at FCB. Within ten years, he became the Global Chief Creative Officer and spent the next ten traveling to over 90 countries, racking up 8 million miles on American Airlines alone. He began writing his first novel, Killing Harry Bones, in the last year of his career and transitioned into becoming a full-time author a year ago, just after retiring from FCB. He’s been writing ever since while doing occasional consulting work for old clients. Jonathan has a great love of animals, and he and his wife try to go on safari every year. They’ve been lucky enough to visit game reserves in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Tanzania, India, and Sri Lanka.

 

Jeff Bachar is a professional voice artist who delights in helping authors bring their stories to life for listeners. He studied acting at the North Carolina School of the Arts and has a BFA from DePaul University’s Theatre School.
