EXCERPT:

CHAPTER ONE

Roman Campbell took a sip of his sparkling water and observed the two men taking to the floor for their first dance as a married couple.

Carter Wilson and Elijah Davis looked blissfully happy as they swayed to a classic Sinatra song, fingers interlocked and arms around one another while their bodies brushed sensuously. It was clear to everyone in the marquee that the grooms only had eyes for each other.

A twinge of jealousy stabbed through Roman at the happiness radiating on the two men’s faces. Carter laughed at something Elijah said and took his husband’s mouth in a hot kiss that had their guests clapping and wolf-whistling.

The newlyweds turned and extended their hands toward a pretty little blond girl in a cream taffeta and lace dress who stood watching them from the sidelines. Maisie, Carter’s niece and his and Elijah’s newly adopted daughter, squealed and ran out to join them. The couple caught her into their arms and resumed their dance, their mouths split in beaming smiles.

Roman swallowed a grimace.

I really am an asshole. I should be happy for them.

He’d been somewhat surprised to receive an invite to what was being touted as the most exclusive celebrity wedding of the year. Though he was friends with Carter, they hadn’t spoken for a while, their busy lives meaning their paths rarely crossed except at social events.

They’d met five years ago, at an exclusive sex club in L.A. It was the kind of place where the world-famous clientele could indulge in their private desires and fantasies to their heart’s content, without fear of their secrets becoming fodder for the paparazzi.

It had been Roman’s first time at the club. He’d hit on Carter the minute he’d walked inside the place, not realizing that the tall man with the dirty blond hair and the body to die for was the A-list Hollywood actor who had practically dominated entertainment news ever since he exploded on the movie scene with his first blockbuster.

Though Carter had flirted with Roman, he hadn’t obliged his invitation to visit one of the club’s private suites for some down and dirty time. He had, however, kept a close eye on him.

Roman had been more than a little drunk and high on drugs when he’d made the impulsive decision to visit the club that night and hook up with a stranger, a fact he had been lambasted for at length when his manager and best friend James Lang turned up and dragged him from the place a couple of hours later.

“At least you had the decency to pick somewhere the paparazzi couldn’t find you!” James had snapped the next morning while Roman lay recovering from his monumental hangover on the sundeck of his L.A. penthouse. “It’s a good thing Carter messaged me when he did.”

“Carter?” Roman had frowned at the unfamiliar name. “Who the hell is Carter? And could you pipe down? This headache is killing me,” he’d added on a groan.

James had clenched and unclenched his hands in a way that told Roman he’d wished they were wrapped around Roman’s neck.

“Carter is the guy you were hitting on last night,” James had explained icily. “He’s a friend of mine.” He’d paused and narrowed his eyes at Roman, a muscle dancing in his cheek. “That headache isn’t the only thing that’s gonna kill you, Roman. You need to cut back on the booze and the drugs. You’re not just ruining your health. You’re sabotaging your career!”

The guilt and anger that had rotted Roman’s insides for as long as he could remember flared into life and had his mouth curving in a nasty smile.

“Are you saying that as my best friend or as my manager?”

The hurt in James’s eyes had Roman immediately regretting his harsh words.

“I’m sorry,” Roman had mumbled in the stiff silence. “I promise I won’t do anything like this again.”

James had watched him for a moment before blowing out a heavy sigh. They’d both known it was a lie.

It wouldn’t be another two years until Roman finally kept his word. By then, the whole of L.A. and the world knew that the lead singer of Crazyknot was damaged goods.

Paradoxically, Roman’s soul-crushing fall from grace only boosted sales of their albums and propelled the band to international stardom. It also turned him into an overnight icon, one he’d assumed the entertainment industry would soon forget. Which made his and Crazyknot’s shockingly successful comeback twelve months ago all the more humbling. Apparently, the world loved nothing more than seeing a former bad boy reform.

Roman’s lips tilted in a self-deprecating smile. Well, almost reform.

He might have ditched the alcohol and the drugs. It didn’t mean he’d turned into a monk. He scanned the marquee, the restless feeling that had been gnawing at his insides a sure-fire sign that he needed to let off some steam in a way that didn’t involve getting intoxicated.

Now, let’s find a guy I can have some fun with.

“I know that look,” someone said next to him.

Roman closed his eyes briefly. He twisted on the bar stool and studied the man who’d taken the seat beside him with a faint frown.

James Lang looked his usual cool and elegant self in a bottle green tuxedo that matched his eyes and framed specs.

Roman pursed his lips.

If it wasn’t for the fact that he’d known James for thirteen years and had seen him puke his guts up on more occasions than he could count when they were teenagers, he might have taken a stab at the guy. James was attractive in the kind of way that made people pause and wonder what lay beneath the impeccable suits and hard exterior.

The only ones who truly knew the infamous manager were the members of Crazyknot and their close friends. For behind the cool, controlled facade James projected burned a fiery and surprisingly passionate soul.

To this day, Roman didn’t know what had turned the outgoing and fun-loving boy he had come to know during what had been the most challenging years of his teenage life, into the stern and reserved man who now sat facing him. It had happened shortly after their first national tour.

Roman and the other members of Crazyknot had long questioned James about his almost overnight transformation, but the manager had always remained tight-lipped on the subject.

“Oh yeah?” Roman grumbled presently. “And what kind of look am I wearing, pray tell?”

James arched an eyebrow. He took a sip of his champagne before leaning in closer. “The kind that says you’re looking for a good fuck.”

Choked off laughter erupted close by.

James stiffened and looked over Roman’s head.

Roman turned, a frown on his face and his mouth parting on a biting remark.

His breath locked in his throat.

Gunmetal blue eyes sparkled with mirth opposite him. Though the stranger straddled the bar stool in a relaxed pose, Roman could tell he was tall and would tower over him by a good few inches. His overlong, sun-kissed brown hair teased the collar of his classic, black tuxedo, the suit doing little to hide the hard angles and solid muscles beneath the expensive material. Silver peppered his short beard and sideburns, framing a rugged, tanned face that wouldn’t look out of place on the cover of an outdoor sports magazine. His fingers were hard and callused where he held a half-empty beer bottle.

The man smiled and tipped his drink at them with a nonchalant dip of his head. “Don’t mind me. I’m just here for the beer.”

Roman’s cock stirred. He swallowed.

Fuck.

Mr. Sideburns was one hundred percent his type. And he looked exactly like the kind of trouble Roman needed to avoid tonight.

EXCERPT:

Two Years Ago.

“Are you sure?”

A faint smile curved Nathan Hardy’s lips as he studied the man across the desk from him. He could tell Cain Sawyer was worried about him despite the frown darkening his rugged face.

“Positive.”

The lines furrowing Cain’s brow deepened. “If you need more time, I’ll talk to the other partners and—”

“You don’t have to do that, Cain. I’ve made up my mind.”

Cain opened his mouth, paused, and released a rueful sigh.

“You always were a stubborn bastard, even when we were in college,” he muttered.

Nathan grinned and climbed to his feet. “And you’ve been a great boss and friend.” A twinge shot down his left thigh. He masked a grimace at the cramp.

Cain rose and escorted him to the elevator. “I’ll call you when I’ve organized a farewell party.”

“You don’t need to do that,” Nathan protested. “I’m the one deserting you guys.”

Cain narrowed his eyes. “You’re having a party, end of story. I’m not letting the best designer in Seattle leave my firm without a proper goodbye.”

Nathan rubbed the back of his neck, conscious of the stares they were attracting. “Alright.”

“And don’t be a stranger when you’re back in town,” Cain said. Nathan startled when the other man pulled him in for a quick hug. “There’ll always be a job here for you if you change your mind.”

Nathan swallowed the sudden lump in his throat.

“Thanks, Cain. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve a friend like you.”

Cain’s eyes gleamed. “If you’re having regrets—”

“I’m not.” Nathan flashed him a remorseful smile. “Not about this.”

He rode the elevator to the first floor, exited the high rise, and paused on the sidewalk. Horns honked on the busy avenue in front of him. Nathan ignored the hustle and bustle of the traffic and the crowd milling around him, and turned to gaze at the building he’d just walked out of.

This is it. I’m officially out of a job.

That thought should have scared the living daylights out of him. Except it didn’t. Not much did these days.

Well, they do say nearly dying does that to people.

His leg throbbed again, reminding him of the reason why he’d just quit the dream job he’d worked so hard for over the years. Nathan clenched his teeth and massaged his stiff thigh muscles. He hadn’t fully stretched this morning after his run. He waited until the spasm passed, raised his face to the hazy blue sky, and took a deep breath.

Today was the start of the rest of his life.

He turned right and headed down the avenue. By the time he’d walked the two miles to his apartment building, his limp had become more evident.

Lisa would kill me if she saw me right now.

The thought of the bubbly and energetic physical therapist brought a smile to Nathan’s face as he crossed the lobby. Though he hadn’t been the most agreeable patient when they’d first met, Lisa had never given up on him. He knew the reason he could walk and run again was due to her perseverance over the past eight months. His smile faded when he recalled their last appointment the day before.

Who knew she’d cry so much?

A bolt of sadness stabbed through Nathan as he got off the elevator on the tenth floor. Saying goodbye to his old life was proving to be much harder than he’d thought it’d be.

He inserted his key in the door of his condo and paused.

It was already unlocked.

There were only two people beside him who had keys to his apartment. His former fiancée Melissa Klein and his brother Dean.

The smell of camellias greeted him when he entered the condo.

Nathan sighed and made a mental note to berate his brother. Dean had obviously told Melissa he was going into the office to hand in his letter of resignation. She would never have come over if she’d known he’d be there otherwise.

He found her on her knees in the bedroom, with her head buried in the closet. Nathan glanced at the half-stuffed overnight bag on the floor before clearing his throat.

Melissa startled and whirled around. “God!” She pressed a hand to her chest. “You scared the crap out of me!”

The guilt he’d been living with these last few weeks stormed through him all over again when he saw the shadows under her eyes and her pinched lips.

“Sorry.”

They stared at each other in silence, unspoken words swirling in the air between them. It was two months to the day since Nathan had broken off their engagement.

Melissa’s expression grew guarded. “I didn’t know you’d be back so soon. I’ll be out of your hair as fast as I can.”

She turned and started rooting around the closet again.

Nathan hesitated. “Do you want a coffee?”

Melissa stiffened. “No.”

Nathan leaned a shoulder against the doorframe. He felt tired all of a sudden. “You’re not even going to look at me?”

Melissa whipped around, her blonde hair flying around her face and her blue eyes bright with barely suppressed anger.

“What do you want me to look at, Nathan?! You dumped me three weeks before our goddamn wedding!”

Shit.

Nathan clenched his jaw and ran a hand through his hair.

“It was the right thing to do, Mel. I know you don’t believe me right now, but I would have made you miserable.”

A muscle jumped in Melissa’s cheek. “Why? Because you don’t think I would have coped with the reality that you might be crippled?” Her knuckles whitened on the sweatshirt she was holding. “I’m not that shallow, Nathan!”

He walked inside the room and sat on the edge of his bed. Their bed.

“I know you aren’t, Mel. And that’s why I needed to let you go. Because—” He faltered.

Melissa’s throat worked convulsively. “Because what, Nathan?”

Nathan took a shallow breath.

Here goes.

“Because I think I was in love with the idea of being in love with you. As were you.”

Melissa recoiled as if he’d physically slapped her, the color draining from her face. Nathan fisted his hands in his lap.

God, forgive me for being such an asshole.

There were many things he had come to regret since he’d woken up in hospital ten months ago, days after the horrific accident that had taken place on Christmas Eve. He’d been heading home to see his family in Bellevue after completing one of the biggest projects of his career when a truck had slipped on an icy patch of road on the opposite side of the highway and careened across the median and into oncoming traffic.

Nathan was one of a handful of people who had survived the multi-vehicle collision that had claimed six lives that day and three more later in hospital. He was put into a medically induced coma and had three rounds of surgery to fix his ruptured spleen and smashed leg before they woke him up.

It was only when he saw pictures of the accident and the remains of his car that Nathan realized how close to death he’d been. According to his doctors, it was a miracle he wasn’t paralyzed from the waist down after his body was almost crushed in half by the dashboard of his Prius.

The months Nathan had spent in hospital and rehab had made him face some hard truths.

There was more to life than working all the hours God made, however passionate he was about his job.

He wasn’t in love with Melissa.

And he desperately needed a change of pace and scenery.

Dean was the first person he’d admitted these new and terrifying feelings to. Although his younger brother had looked like he was ready to punch his lights out for deciding to dump Melissa weeks before their wedding, he’d been by Nathan’s side when the latter had finally spoken to their parents about his future plans.

Nathan had known that breaking things off with Mel would hit them hard, since she was the daughter of their closest friends. And he’d ready for their angry words and recriminations. But he’d misjudged how traumatic nearly losing their firstborn son had been on Ben and Helen Hardy. Though they’d expressed their disappointment, they’d not shunned him.

Melissa, on the other hand, had not been as forgiving.

Nathan knew ending their engagement was the right thing to do. He didn’t love her, not the way he should love the person he intended to spend the rest of his life with. He’d realized this when he’d seen her for the first time after the accident. It was as if a veil had been lifted from his eyes and he could see everything clearly for the first time in his life.

“Do you really mean that?”

Melissa’s hoarse words brought him back to the present.

Nathan gazed at the woman he had hurt and cursed his old self once more.

“I like you, Mel. A lot. As a friend.” His lips stretched in a thin smile. “As a lover. But I don’t love you the way a husband should love his wife. I know I sound like a callous bastard right now, but trust me when I say that I’m the wrong man for you. You deserve better, Mel. You deserve true love and a happy ever after. You deserve a man who will cherish you for the beautiful person that you are.”

Tears bloomed in Melissa’s eyes. A sob escaped her throat.

Nathan rose and went to her then. As he knelt on the floor of his bedroom and closed his arms around the woman he had wounded so badly with his words and actions, he made a promise to himself.

He had been given a second chance at a life. He doubted the Heavens would give him a stab at true love too. But if they did, if the person he was truly meant to be with ever crossed his path, he would cling on to them and never let them go. And he would treasure them for the rest of his life.

EXCERPT:
The music thumped in Hunter Thomson’s ears and throbbed pleasantly against his skin. He drummed a hand lightly against his arm as he waited for his order, his fingers matching the beat of the pop song blaring from the club’s speakers. He flashed a smile at the girl who brought him his beer, turned, and leaned his back against the bar.
His gaze roamed the dance floor a few feet from where he stood. It was packed with hot, writhing men. A dry smile curved his lips as he brought the bottle to his mouth and took a sip of the cold beverage.
Well, hot writhing men is what I came here for.
His eyes found the couple on the far left of the sunken stage. Hunter’s smile turned into a full-blown grin.
Irritation danced briefly on Tristan Hart’s face when he met Hunter’s amused stare. The man working up a sweat against Tristan seemed oblivious to their exchange; Dan Flynn was already on his fourth drink and focused on his mission for the night. Which was apparently to get in Tristan’s pants and ride him till the cows came home.
Hunter could tell from the subtle way Tristan was avoiding full body contact with Dan that he wasn’t interested. He knew Tristan would never have accepted Dan’s invitation had he known the guy would start hitting on him the moment they walked through the doors of the hottest new gay club in L.A. The fact that Dan had told him to bring a friend to the opening night had evidently lured Tristan into thinking his client wasn’t interested in him.
Hunter could hardly blame the poor man.
With his quiet brown eyes, rugged good looks, and muscular, tattooed body, Tristan was a picture of understated masculinity. Not only was he hot, his ability to fix any motorbike and sports cars that landed in his garage made him one of the most sought-after mechanics in the state. It also regularly brought a line of men and women to his door who wanted to get his hands on more than just their hoods.
All evidence pointed to the fact that Tristan’s latest client was one such man. Unfortunately for Dan, the sexy mechanic made it a rule never to mix business with pleasure.
Had Hunter not known Tristan since they were practically in diapers, he might have been tempted to have a taste of the guy himself.
Except we’re both tops, so that would definitely not have worked out.
Hunter let his gaze wander over the crowded club. It wasn’t everyday he came to L.A. for a night on the town and he was determined to make the most of it.
Having two of his close friends recently get shacked up had made him antsy. It had also been a few months since he’d hooked up with anyone and he very much wanted to come somewhere other than his own hand tonight.
Besides, I have a reputation to keep up. I can’t be Twilight Falls’ most notorious bad boy when I haven’t seen any action other than my own fingers lately.
A man caught Hunter’s interest a moment later. Blond, blue eyes. A body that showed he liked to work out. The stranger’s mouth curved up as he studied Hunter from where he stood amidst a large group, his expression telling Hunter he liked what he was seeing too. Hunter’s lips tilted in an answering smile.
Someone stepped in his line of sight.
Hunter shifted to try and catch the blond’s attention. The man blocking his view moved too.
Irritation darted through Hunter.
The guy looming over him was wearing neatly pressed cream chinos, a navy shirt with a red-rimmed collar that matched his two tone dress shoes, and a dark blue blazer. The top three buttons of the shirt were open, exposing an expanse of toned, tanned flesh.
“Can I get through?”
Hunter blinked.
The man’s voice was like whisky poured over rough velvet.
He looked up and met a pair of arresting hazel eyes set in a chiseled face blessed by the gods.
The man arched an elegant eyebrow, his expression patient and seemingly heedless of the interested stares he was drawing. He had a good couple of inches on Hunter’s own six foot-two.
“The bar?” the stranger added slowly, as if addressing a dimwit.
Hunter flushed and stepped away from the counter. “Er, sure.”
The man’s cologne filled Hunter’s nose as he slipped past and took his place. He smelled of pine and evergreens, like the forests of Twilight Falls.
Hunter stared at the stranger’s wide back. It was clear from his charismatic appearance and expensive clothes that he was loaded.
A hand landed on Hunter’s shoulder, startling him. He looked around.
It was the blond he’d been eyeing up.
“Hey,” the guy said warmly.
“Hey, yourself,” Hunter replied with a smile, firmly squashing his burgeoning interest for the man at the bar.
He’s not my type, anyway.
The blond indicated the sunken stage. “Wanna dance?”
A teasing grin lit up Hunter’s. “I gotta warn you. I have killer moves. Think you can keep up?”
The blond chuckled. He leaned in and whispered hotly in Hunter’s left ear.
“I’ve got some killer moves on my own.”
Hunter’s dick perked with interest as the blond’s breath washed across his skin. The guy took his hand and led him to the dance floor.
Three songs and another beer later and Hunter was feeling buzzed. He and the blond had definite sexual chemistry; he could tell he would be coming in the guy’s hand, mouth, or ass tonight.
“Wanna go somewhere quieter?”
Hunter followed the blond’s gaze.
He was looking at a dimly-lit corridor leading to the restrooms.
Hunter masked a frown. He’d hoped they’d be going back to the hotel he and Tristan had booked for the night. A quickie in a public toilet wasn’t really his thing.
“It’s not what you’re thinking,” the blond said mysteriously, as if he’d guessed Hunter’s thoughts.
Hunter arched an eyebrow. “It’s not?”
The blond grabbed his arm. “Come on.”
Hunter scanned the club for Tristan as he headed for the restrooms with the blond. He found his best friend with his inebriated client at the bar on the other side of the floor.
Tristan caught his eyes. “Everything okay?” he mouthed.
Hunter nodded and gave him a reassuring wave.
The club’s washrooms were stark and clean. They were also thankfully empty bar a handful of men.
One of them was the blond’s friend, a guy with dark hair and eyes.
“You brought him,” the man said with a grin.
A sinking feeling blossomed in the pit of Hunter’s stomach at his expression.
“What’s going on?” Hunter asked the blond guardedly.
Blondie smiled at him, his face relaxed despite Hunter’s cool tone.
“We thought you’d be a good fit for us.”
Hunter suppressed a grimace. Great.
He studied the dark-haired guy. “Are you his partner?”
“I am.”
“I’m sorry, but I’m not into threesomes,” Hunter said gruffly.
Blondie trailed a teasing hand down Hunter’s chest all the way to the buckle of his jeans and beyond. “Are you sure? ‘Cause you look pretty turned on to me.”
Hunter grabbed Blondie’s wrist as he stroked his way back up his erection.
“I was, when I thought it’d be just you.”
The door to the restrooms opened. Hunter swallowed a curse when he saw the guy who entered.
It was Hazel Eyes from the bar.
The man stopped and looked at them curiously. “Am I interrupting?”
Hunter recovered his senses first. “No, you aren’t.” He turned to Blondie and his partner. “Like I said, I’m not interested.”
Blondie pouted. “That’s a shame. I was really looking forward to having a sex sandwich with you.”
Hunter stared, not certain he’d heard right. “Excuse me?”
Hazel Eyes turned away and started washing his hands at the sink, but not before Hunter caught the sparkle of amusement in his gaze.
“You know, where one of us fucks your mouth while the other pounds your ass,” Blondie explained blithely.
Hunter’s jaw dropped open. He caught a glimpse of Hazel Eyes’s reflection in the mirror above the row of sinks. The guy’s lips were pinched tight and his shoulders were shaking slightly. Outrage shot through Hunter.
Is that asshole laughing at me?!
“I’m sorry to disappoint you,” he told Blondie and his partner icily once he’d regained his composure, “again. But I’m a top, so nobody is going anywhere near my ass.”
Blondie’s eyes widened. “Oh, wow.” He paused, a moue twisting his mouth. “Are you sure? ‘Cause you kinda give off a bottom feel.”
“Positive,” Hunter growled.
“Oh well, your loss, I suppose,” Blondie murmured. “Come on, Jeff, let’s get out of here.”
Hunter watched wordlessly as the pair exited the restrooms. He blew out a sigh, raked a hand through his hair, and headed for the door.
“You sure you should be going out like that?”

EXCERPT:
Carter Wilson closed his eyes and groaned as he came in the mouth of the woman who was busy blowing him. His fingers clenched in her perfectly-styled hair, messing it up. He knew it would likely give away what they’d been up to, but he didn’t care.
A hiss of air left him when she finally let go of his pleasantly spent cock. The blonde sat back on her expensive Jimmy Choo heels and licked her lips greedily as she gazed up at him, her blue eyes sultry with lust and her nipples hard where her breasts showed in her gaping cleavage.
Carter reluctantly tucked his dick back in his tuxedo trousers.
If he’d had a condom on him, he would have pulled her to her feet, yanked up her thousand-dollar Dolce & Gabbana dress, and fucked her against the wall of the art gallery’s restroom stall until she screamed in pleasure.
He’d unfortunately used the last rubber in his wallet in his trailer yesterday, after he finished shooting what he hoped would be his next Hollywood blockbuster movie in New York. He’d known that the assistant he’d been given by the studio had had the hots for him all along, but Carter never liked mixing business with pleasure, not after the unpleasant incident that had nearly ended his movie career prematurely. So he’d waited until the last day of filming to give her a parting gift, which was his dick in her mouth and her hungry pussy.
Most people called him a bastard and a serial womanizer, a reputation that was only rendered more infamous by the paparazzi who constantly tailed him. Carter didn’t mind. He knew the career he’d chosen meant sacrificing his privacy and, as far as he was concerned, his conscience was clear; he’d never made false promises to the women he’d slept with, always used protection, and had been upfront about never wanting to be in a serious relationship.
There were only two aspects of his life that Carter protected jealously: his family and his hidden bisexuality. The first had been surprisingly easy to keep under wraps, since his only living relative had left the small town they’d grown up in some years back and was now halfway across the world.
As for the second, although there were plenty of gay actors who’d come out in the business in the last few decades, Carter knew his status as an action hero and the opportunities that might come his way in the future might be affected if he were to reveal like he liked to fuck men as much as he liked fucking women.
On the occasions when he felt like dick more than pussy, Carter visited an exclusive club in L.A. where all employees and guests were made to sign non-disclosure agreements. There, he had his pick of the male clientele who habitually called upon the club to satisfy their own secret desires. Carter had been hesitant to join up at first. But after hearing the club rules dictated all visitors wear close-fitting carnival masks to conceal their identities and that there were private suites where guests could indulge in their wildest sexual fantasies, he’d signed on the dotted line and never regretted it since.
“I think it’s about time we got back out there, don’t you?” Carter told the blonde with a relaxed grim.
She hesitated before returning his smile with a lingering look of regret. Carter knew she would brag to her closest friends about tonight. It wasn’t everyday she got to suck the cock of a A-list Hollywood star while her husband was entertaining their guests fifty feet away.
Carter waited a couple of minutes after she vacated the restroom before stepping out into the service corridor at the rear of the art gallery. He stilled when he saw the woman leaning a hip against the wall in the shadows, her arms crossed rigidly across her body.
Izzy Batista’s green eyes were dark with exasperation and there was a distinctly unhappy moue on her pretty face. “Please tell me you didn’t just fuck the gallery owner’s wife?”
Carter’s lips tilted in a teasing smirk. “It depends on your definition of fuck.”
Izzy swore. “For Christ’s sake Carter, can’t you keep it in your pants for one goddamn night?!”
Carter strolled up to her and rested his shoulder casually against the wall, mimicking her pose.
“Normally, I would say yes,” he drawled in a sarcastic tone. “But, you see, a little mouse with brown hair and green eyes blackmailed me into coming here and I just had to, you know, blow off some steam.”
Izzy rolled her eyes. “It’s only for a couple of hours. Besides, your agent said you didn’t have anything lined up for tonight.”
Carter frowned. “I did have something lined up. It was called an evening spent relaxing in my own home for the first time in three months.”
Izzy gasped and raised a hand to her lips, an expression of mock horror painted across her face. “OMG! Is this the first sign that Carter Wilson is getting old? Would you like me to get you slippers and a hot cocoa kit for Christmas?”
“Ha-ha, very funny,” Carter muttered.
Izzy grinned and tucked her arm through his elbow. “Now, why don’t you be a good blackmail victim and come along peacefully. We’re about to do the big reveal.”
Carter grunted and allowed her to guide him to the main gallery area.
Izzy was the younger sister of Wyatt Batista, one of Carter’s closest childhood friends from his hometown of Twilight Falls. Together with Tristan Hart, Hunter Thomson, Drake Jackson, Miles Martinez, and Alex Hancock, they’d formed the “Terrible Seven”, a name that had struck dread in the heart of parents, teachers, and law enforcement for the decade and a half they’d grown up together in the quaint tourist town in the San Bernardino Mountains.
It was Izzy who’d sneaked in the boy’s locker room when Carter and the others were in high school and taken the infamous picture of his naked butt, which she had threatened to use to blackmail him on many an occasion since.
Though Carter knew it was in jest, he still worried about Izzy. The woman was the devil incarnate when it came to poking fun at her friends, and Carter wouldn’t put it past her to one day find a picture of his sixteen-year-old ass plastered over a billboard in L.A.
A dull murmur of voices reached them as they turned a corner and entered the gallery. Tonight was the opening night of Finn West’s first art exhibition in over three years and the whole town was buzzing with the return of the famous artist.
Although Carter had reluctantly agreed to headline the guest list, he had to admit to being more than a little intrigued once Izzy explained the circumstances behind her request.
It turned out Finn was Alex Hancock’s husband of a few months.
Carter’s gaze found the happy couple where they stood with the art gallery owner next the central piece of the exhibition, which still lay hidden beneath a white sheet. Finn had seemed tense when Carter had met him on the red carpet at the beginning of the evening. He now looked like a totally different person and could hardly keep his eyes, and his hands, off the man next to him.
A twinge of jealousy stabbed through Carter as he observed Alex’s radiant expression. It was evident to anyone in the room that the pair were very much in love. He wondered if he would ever find that kind of connection one day, or if he was doomed to a life of brief sexual encounters.
Carter had yet to meet anyone who had held his sexual and intellectual interest long enough for him to consider them as a potential life partner. The women who entered his life seemed more interested in having a movie star as a boyfriend than in who he was as a person, while the men were one-night stands whose faces he wouldn’t recognize if he passed them on the street.
He smiled blankly at the art gallery’s owner’s wife as he walked past the couple and let Izzy lead him to Finn and Alex’s side. Alex greeted him with a hug and a hearty pat on the back and Carter found himself feeling genuinely happy for his friend as he embraced him. They’d all been through some rough times together before he and Alex left Twilight Falls and it was great to see Alex’s eyes devoid of the guilt he’d carried for so many years.
The central piece of the exhibition was finally revealed to wild applause. Carter took his leave an hour later and headed out of the back door to the parking lot. He’d just climbed inside his Maserati when his cell started ringing. He took the phone out of his pocket and stared at the screen.
It was an international number. One he didn’t recognize.
The first tendril of dread pooled inside Carter as he gazed at it. He hesitated before taking the call. “Hello?”
“Is that Mr. Wilson? Mr. Carter Wilson?” a woman said in a heavy French accent. “The next of kin of Louise Payton?”
Carter’s stomach clenched in fear. “Yes, it is,” he finally managed, mouth so dry he was surprised he didn’t croak.
“I’m so sorry, Mr. Wilson,” the woman continued in a voice filled with compassion, “I’m afraid there has been a terrible accident.”
A buzzing noise filled Carter’s ears. The words the woman was saying reached him dimly, every syllable a knife that stabbed into his heart.
In that moment, he knew his life would never be the same again.
