The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . AVENGED BY A HIGHLAND LAIRD (The MacLomain Series: A New Beginning, #4) . . . Sky Purington is one of the few authors that can get me to love Viking warriors. She also allows me to fall in love with more than just the main characters of the romance begin featured. She allows for me to get invested in the entire plot, sub-plot being carried through it all. I thing one of my most favorite aspects of her writing is the way she weaves in the history of the land and its people. She gives you just enough of the truth to make you feel as if this romance very much occurred. Bryce and Jessie find that they two will get swept away with all that happens during their journey in and through time. Jessie finds herself out of place but not out of touch. Seeing each new couple of the series find connection and a grounding point was spectacular. As a whole the series sets the bar high and gives new meaning to a time traveling with a few sexy Scots and their headstrong 21st century women.

Excerpt
She didn’t miss the flash of disappointment in his eyes before he managed a small nod and held out his hand. “Aye then, lass, step around me.”
Jessie clenched her teeth, disappointed that the small bridge they had built was so swiftly knocked down. That he was so quick to dislike her again. But that wasn’t to be worried about right now.
Well aware time was running out, she carefully turned, so she was facing the wall, took his hand, and began moving. Step by step, she made her way along the ledge to the point where they would have to share a space.
She met his pale golden eyes and tried to ignore the flustered way they made her feel. “Are you ready for me to pass?”
“I am,” he lied.
She could tell by his guarded expression he was nowhere near ready. Not because he was a coward but because he was aware of his effect on her. More so, how much he liked it. His wariness had nothing to do with plummeting to their death but allowing her close enough that she could pass. Feeling the heat of her skin.
So a bridge might have been knocked down, but something else was taking its place. She worked to steady her breathing at the quickly escalating attraction between them. Now was most certainly not the time.
Yet she had known this would likely happen, didn’t she? That it would be unavoidable. At least for her. How else could it be considering the secrets she still kept? Secrets she was foolish enough to have thought she could keep from him for his own safety. But then she had very little real-life practice when it came to attraction. Especially the sort she felt being so close to Bryce. He was the real thing and far more then she anticipated.
However, now definitely wasn’t the time for a chat about deep dark secrets that would only upset him further.
They needed to keep moving.
Though tempted to close her eyes so she didn’t drown in those piercing golden orbs of his again, she kept them open and made her move. With her hand braced on the left side of his waist, she began moving along the front of him. She was halfway across and directly in front of him when he touched the side of her waist, lowered his lips close to her ear and whispered, “Dinnae move, lass.”
His words floated through her mind. “There is a stranger standing across the way.”
“I feel him,” she responded as her eyes rose to his. “He doesn’t see us yet.”
Though she thought it was her breath that caught when they’re eyes met, it might have been his. Alarmed by the impact of being this close, she nearly teetered back, but his arm slipped around and pulled her even closer.
Unable to breathe at all now, she didn’t look away. She couldn’t if she wanted to. “Let me go, and I’ll hide us without him knowing.”
Unmistakable heat gathered in his eyes. Heat and desire he warred to contain, but she saw it…then she felt it as his arm tightened. The pale gold flecks in his thickly lashed eyes only grew brighter with curiosity. While she could tell herself that he simply wondered how she would get them out of this, she knew better. His curiosity was entirely focused on the strong chemistry between them.
Despite the waterfall’s intense spray and the fact an enemy could very well be staring at them right now, she was human enough to get caught up in what was happening between them. How it felt to finally be pressed against his long, hard body.
To finally lay her hands on the physical form of someone she had known for so long.
“No,” she whispered, suddenly frightened as heat swept through her. “Not now. Not yet.” She swallowed hard and shook her head, suddenly lost in memories. No matter how real this might be, she had long trained herself that she couldn’t trust lustful feelings when it came to him. That she should not indulge in them. “Let me go. Please.”
Though her response could simply be that of a woman choosing to reject what flared between them, he seemed to sense there was more to it. His arousal turned to protectiveness as his brow furrowed in determination and his grip tightened ever so slightly. She couldn’t help but wonder if he was inherently responding to her past. To those moments he was so much a part of without ever knowing.

They met each other’s smiles, not a bit of discomfort between them as they discussed things that would be entirely inappropriate with any lass from his time. More than that, anything he would ever talk so casually about with a lass he just met.
“So back to us moving forward together and trying to save my country.” He considered her. “Are ye up for it, lass?”
She seemed to contemplate it as she continued eying him. “So let me get this straight. You want to skip all the love and intimacy and see if we can get out of this ring-binding thing while we pretend to be together?”
“More the pity on the intimacy part but aye,” he said. “What about ye? Do ye want to move forward with me and take control of our own destiny rather than have anyone or,” he glanced at her ring, “anything dictate it for us?”
She crossed her arms over her ample enough chest and tapped her foot as she thought about it. “Y’know what, Graham, I reckon I do.” She shook her head. “But can it be done? Can we be together without actually being together?”
“I think ‘tis best that we give it a try.” He nodded, more sure of this quickly hatched plan by the moment. “Just as long as ye realize we cannae truly be together.”
“That sounds doable.” Yet he saw the curiosity in her eyes. “So what gives? Are you in love with someone your kin has forbidden?” Her eyes rounded in intrigue. “Secretly married?”
“Is it so important to know?” He remained perfectly honest with her. “Because I would rather not share quite yet.” Graham issued his most charming smile. “Right now, ‘twould be best if, by the time we return to the house, we could say we’re smitten and desire one another.” He shook his head. “And no one else.”
Christina’s full, perfectly shaped lips twisted as she considered his offer. “What’ll happen if we don’t?” Her foot tapped a little faster. “Is Bryce gonna want me?” She cocked her head. “And is he a real dragon?”
“Half dragon,” he said, sure to sound grave. “But aye, the MacLeod can easily shift into a ferocious beastie.” He shook his head. “One that is frightening to behold.”
A little smirk returned to her lips as she listened to him. “You’re exaggerating, aren’t you?”
“Nay.” He arched his brows. “I’ve seen my cousin embrace his dragon, quite recently in fact, and ‘twas terrifying.”
Her smile didn’t budge, and her bonnie eyes never wavered from his. “You’re determined to play this up I see.” She stepped a bit closer, her tone that of a co-conspirator as she looked right then left before she met his eyes again. “All right, I’m game.” She pointed between them. “You and me. How do we go about it without everyone knowing we’re trying to trick ‘em?” She held up her hand between them and eyed the ring. “And what about this?”
“I think, for starters, we let my cousins see how intense the attraction is betwixt us already.” He nodded. While he had intended to spend more time getting to know her, it really wasn’t necessary now. She was on board with deceiving everyone, and that’s exactly what he needed.
“Wow, glad to see you’re decisive,” she commented, but he could tell she approved. “Just wondering…won’t your kin see right through it? Better yet, your sister?”
“Nay, they havenae been around me enough to know better,” he provided.
“Ah.” She gave him a knowing look. “So you really are off with lots of women.” Her look turned sly. “Or one extra special top secret mystery gal.”
“I didnae say that,” he denied.
“You didn’t have to,” she said with approval, eying him over again. “Like I said, it makes sense.”
He smiled. “Thank ye.”
“You’re welcome.”
“Yer quite bonnie yerself,” he said, comfortable with how frank they were with each other.
She grinned. “Heck if I don’t know it.”
“So we are in agreement then?” he said, still dishing out his most charming smile though he knew he didn’t have to. “We were smitten the moment we met, and refuse to be with anyone else.”

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . TAKEN BY A HIGHLAND LAIRD (The MacLomain Series: A New Beginning, #2) . . . Another adventure in The MacLomain series with a new installment to the New Beginning series. I have the expectation of getting an adventure to dream about, a laird that takes my breath away, an American female that has no clue what she has gotten herself into. Lindsay may not know exactly what she has gotten herself involved in, but she finds that her training/profession helps her out of a few spots quite efficiently. That was until she gets caught up with a band of Scotsmen, one in particular. He pretends to want nothing to do with her, but that was quite obvious not the truth of things.

Conall and Lindsay find that their attraction to one another was strong. And a bit history changing. I loved following the adventure that Lindsay got herself in. The adventure with the English solider, the Scotsmen, the Bruce and even with the William Wallace. I love finding myself in a new setting that contains the rich history of the Scots, the grand adventures of 21st century women in the past, and the heroic, protective nature of the highland lairds/lords/warriors.

Sworn to the Highland Laird – The MacLomain Series: A New Beginning, #1

Promised to a Highland Laird – The MacLomain Series: A New Beginning, #3

BLURB
The last thing Lindsay expects when she visits Milly’s home in New Hampshire is to be thrust back in time to thirteenth century Scotland days before the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Worse yet, captured by the English. Using her wits and ability to wrap men around her little finger, she survives long enough to be rescued by a band of Scotsmen. One of them, a rigid Highland chieftain determined to protect his country, rarely lets her out of his sight. A man, as it turns out, who is immune to her allure…or so it seems.

From the moment Clan MacLomain decides to save Scotland’s history, Laird Conall Hamilton knows he needs to be part of it. What he does not foresee is a beautiful twenty-first century actress crossing his path. More so, that they end up caught in an obligatory kiss that sparks an infamous battle. A kiss, as Fate would have it, that takes them on an adventure through time to both the Action at Earnside Skirmish and the Action at Happrew.

Joining first Sir William Wallace then King Robert the Bruce, Conall and Lindsay end up on a journey that will leave neither unscathed. Though determined to keep each other at arm’s length, desire simmers, reeling them ever closer. Inner demons are faced as they navigate a powerful connection neither saw coming. A bond so intense and passionate that it might very well help them defeat the enemy and save a nation.

Excerpt (Spicy)
“I’ll be,” Lindsay murmured as she continued to eye him with a look he knew all too well by now. She thought she had found a way to get closer to him. Therefore, a means to eventually get him to do anything she wanted.
Almost as if she followed his thoughts, she cocked her head. “You don’t like that do you, Conall?” Her lashes dropped a scant fraction as she seemed to see right through him. “You don’t want to get too personal because it might allow me too close.” The corner of her lip curled up slowly, and her knowing eyes sparkled with newfound power. “Why do I get the feeling it’s already too late?”
He frowned. “Too late for what?”
“Too late for you to stop wanting me,” she whispered, her large sultry eyes shimmering in the torchlight. “Because you do, don’t you, Conall?”
Aye. He did. With everything in him.
Like always, it was nearly impossible to pull his eyes from hers, but he did. As it was every time, he had to fight to keep from looking at her again. Gazing at the lass muddled his mind, and right now it needed to stay level. More than that, he had to remember she was not the lass for him.
He would never survive her.
She inhaled deeply and murmured to herself. Words he could hear with his superior hearing. Words that caught him off-guard. Against his better judgement, he looked her way again. “What do you mean you dinnae understand why I’m different than the rest?” He frowned. “Explain, lass.”
“Oh, I think you know.” She stood, her movements fluid and seductive as she sauntered his way. “I think you very well know.”
Though the dress given to her at the camp was too big for her, it didn’t hide her full breasts or her perfect hourglass figure. She was built for a man’s hands and hell if she didn’t know it as she sat beside him, close enough that their shoulders touched. Her slender hand slid onto his thigh dangerously close to his eager cock. If he didn’t know better, he would say she knew exactly what state she had him in.
“You are wearing the ring again,” he managed, irritated by his thickening voice, by the stark lust she provoked.
“I am,” she concurred as her hand slid a fraction closer to his manhood. “Do you know why?”
“Aye.” Conall put his hand over hers and shook his head. “But we will find another way out of here.”
Any way but how they got here, to begin with.
“You enjoyed that kiss, Laird Hamilton,” she murmured, her voice soft and seductive. “Don’t tell me you didn’t.”
He more than enjoyed it. But it was a kiss that could not be repeated. Yet as she intended, his eyes drifted to her lips. When they did, the tip of her dainty pink tongue slipped out and ran along her plush lower lip. He didn’t realize he had clenched his hand around hers until she jerked ever-so-slightly. When she did, he pulled away only for her to try to stop him which, as it turned out, conveniently put her hand right alongside his erection.
He clenched his jaw and remained very still as her eyes dropped and her breath caught.
If he had any willpower left, he would push her hand away. He would remind her that unlike most men, he did not want her. Yet she was already blatantly admiring proof that said otherwise. A maneuver he knew she did on purpose to reel him ever closer. Regrettably, it was working because he had not moved an inch.
He tried to focus on the hiss of the torches, even the chill of the stone at his back, but all he could see was her hand. How small and delicate it appeared beside the heavy ridge of his cock straining against his breeches.
“Well, well,” she said softly, her voice raspy, sensual and knowing. “It seems you’re stiff in more ways than one, Laird Hamilton.”

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . SWORN TO A HIGHLAND LAIRD (The MacLomain Series: A New Beginning, #1) . . . Adlin and Mildred (Milly) are getting another chance to make it. This tryst in to the past makes for a set of interesting revelations for Milly. She discovers her lost life, love, and danger. We are in the heartland of Scotland. I love Scotland. I love a brogue. I loved the fight for independence for Scotland. Having William Wallace weaved in to the tale was fantastic. It allowed for a deeper connection to the time period. This read amped up the emotions and added an extra layer of danger from the unknown. This was the start of a new series within the MacLomain series. Watching another generation fall in love and journey throughout time. For this new series there is an added element for you to discover as you read the latest addition in the new series A New Beginning.

BLURB
When Milly is hired by an anonymous client interested in selling his New Hampshire colonial, she’s drawn not only to his sexy brogue over the phone but to the house itself. Unfortunately, when she arrives, she finds the home abandoned and the man who contacted her non-existent. If that isn’t enough, the mystery only deepens when she discovers something in the attic she dreamt about as a child. A Claddagh ring that whisks her back in time to medieval Scotland.

Reborn into a new life, Laird Adlin MacLomain knows things are about to get complicated. Devoted to both William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, he and his clan are determined to fight in the First War of Scottish Independence. However, it will take more than brawn and battle skills to see their country through to freedom. It’s going to take help from the future. Specifically, from a lass named Milly.

When Adlin and Milly connect across time, enemies take notice. England becomes more of a threat as well as its unknown allies. After all, there’s power to be had in a Scottish Laird and a modern day woman finding each other…remembering one another. The life they once shared. The love that was theirs. More so, the strength and perseverance they were capable of together.

Will it be enough to fight all that’s coming their way? Find out in Sworn to a Highland Laird.

Excerpt
Milly tried not to frown. “His lasses?”
Like there had been so many.
“Aye, did ye not know he was once immortal and rumored to have been with quite a few…”
“I’ve heard,” she interrupted before he could innocently drive her away from Adlin. “He’s quite loved.”
“Aye, quite,” William agreed, grinning as he eyed her. “But for all the rumored lasses ‘tis also said that only one ever truly claimed his heart.”
“Is that right?” she murmured, surprised by how winded she suddenly felt. “And who was that?”
“I think ye well know who she was, lassie,” William said softly as he took her hand and pulled her after him.
“Not sure I do,” she murmured as they stopped almost at the very spot Adlin had dipped her hand in the water the night before.
“Were ye not once called Mildred then?” William asked as he pulled off his shirt. “Were ye not called by the same name in another life?”
“I…uh…oh…what are you doing?” Her eyes widened as he yanked his boots off then did the same with his pants.
“I think ‘tis obvious.” He grinned as he waded into the water naked. Milly knew she should turn, but for shit’s sake, this was William Wallace and what modern day Scots loving girl in her right mind would look away? Unfortunately, after a brief glimpse, it seemed she would as she averted her eyes then did, in fact, turn away.
“What’s obvious is that you just stripped down in front of me,” she called over her shoulder.
“Aye.” He issued a low whistle. “And ‘tis bloody cold!”
“I know.” She sure as hell did. “So back to what you said before…”
“And what was that?” came a low, dark tone she almost didn’t recognize as Adlin until he appeared through the woods with a thunderous look on his face. One solely focused on William.
Milly’s mouth dropped as Adlin yanked off his shirt but didn’t bother with anything else except his boots before he strode into the water with rage in his eyes. “My kin and I treated ye bloody good, lad, yet here ye are strippin’ down in front of my lass! What are ye hoping for being so brazen because ‘tis bloody disrespectful to both Milly and me!”
She was so focused on Adlin’s upper body and how cut he was that she didn’t realize he had a sword and seemed set to kill William. An important man with one hell of an army really nearby. One that would come to his defense in no time. For that matter, based on the whistles then roars, she’d guess they were seconds away.
“Och, nay, ye’ve got this all wrong, Adlin.” William shook his head and ducked beneath the first swing of Adlin’s sword. “I wasnae wooin’ her.”
“Nay?” When Adlin thrust, William leapt to the side. “Yet ye’ve yer cock swingin’ for her to admire, aye then?”
“I wasn’t admiring anything,” she called out. Her voice trailed off as plain old female appreciation took over. She tilted her head and started admiring a whole lot as Adlin’s tartan started to slip.
“Oh, look at that,” she whispered, her eyes wide on his tight ass as he thrust his blade at William so quickly that Wallace stumbled back into the water. But not before someone tossed him a sword, and he blocked Adlin’s blade as it came down hard.
It was that, the harsh sound of metal clanging against metal, that finally snapped her out of her reverie and she screeched, “Stop, you’ve got it all wrong, Adlin!”
That didn’t slow him in the least. He was roaring mad and going at William with fury.
“Oh no, oh no, no,” she kept muttering as she raced into the water after them. By that time they were going at each other viciously as William mostly defended and tried to explain that Milly wanted Adlin and no one else. Though she might argue that to some degree it did not stop her from splashing downstream after them.
“Adlin, stop!” she cried, but with all their clinking and clanging she wasn’t sure anyone heard a word.
Adlin was out for blood, and at this point, it seemed William was too. Adlin slashed, William ducked. William thrust, Adlin leapt to the side. They were well matched and moving fast. How could this end well? It would not if she were the judge of it. And it appeared she was seeing how she was the only one willing to stop the battle in a river now lined with warriors.

“No,” she cried again and stumbled forward, determined to see an end to this. Unfortunately, she was so caught up in stopping it that she didn’t realize how foolish she was until she’d leapt in between them and William’s sword came down on her.
