once unleashed, can have very unpredictable results...
Sixteen-year-old Alyssa Chance Oh had been called many things. Magician, sorcerer’s apprentice, even witch. But nothing had prepared her for being called a failure.
After botching her first solo spell, where she only partially reanimates her grandfather into a voice in a toy jack-in-the-box, Alyssa has to set out to find and return a gryphon king’s magik scarf or else he will do something unspeakable to her grandmother.
But that sneaky scarf is not where the king said it was, and now the only way to get to it is through a dragon’s lair.

Just then, a loud shout came from the direction of the corridor.
What now?
Edegast shouted again, and he sounded desperate. The group of snowmen hastily rose, and Alyssa slung her bow over one shoulder and her quiver over the other.
Presently, Edegast, carrying Pappy Oh’s tin box, hurried into the room, red-faced, bothered, and breathless. “Gone! Vanished!” he managed to say.
“What happened?” Alyssa asked, nocking an arrow as fast as she could.
“Vanished? Has Madrid disappeared?” asked Bryon. He immediately acted. “Fletch, you and Cerius take your swords and search this castle, every room. He cannot have gotten far. Yeti-men, take the wolves outside, search the grounds. Let them eat the varmint. Edegast, call the guards to arms, man!”
Edegast exhaled, inhaled, and raised his hand to get attention. “Halt... Stop... Not him!” he huffed.
Alyssa stuck out her arm to end Bryon’s charge. “Wait. Something’s wrong here. We can’t send out an army for one tiny rat. What are you saying, Edegast?”
Edegast collected himself. “Not Madrid,” he gasped. “The scarf. The scarf is gone.”
