The Book Junkie Reads . . .Reckless Dreams Interview with . . . M. B. Sträng . . .
How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work? I have my own unique style, with a dash of Robin Hobb, and a sprinkling of Terry Pratchett.
Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you? Like anyone, I had to learn writing skills, but there is a natural flow, too. If I’m stressed out, I can’t tap into that creative flow, so I need to have my relaxation time, my quiet space, my little writing rituals that allow me to open those gates that let the creativity stream through. Once I get into that zone, I can’t shut it off until I’ve finished a section or chapter.
What mindset or routine do you feel the need to set when preparing to write (in general whether you are working on a project or just free writing)? I have found it helpful to create a loosely structured ritual to help myself get into the flow of writing. Coffee is important to this process. Once I’ve finished the coffee, I make sure I have some sort of tea in my cup, usually Earl Grey, nettle, or some other herb. I write in the morning, which isn’t as early as you might think, since I’m a night owl. Although, if the muse strikes me, and I have time, I will write in the afternoon or at night; it’s best not to put any limits on myself. I get mundane things, like eating breakfast and checking email, out of the way. This frees me to focus on writing. If I’m having a little writer’s block, I meditate for ten minutes. I make sure there are no distractions or interruptions. For example, I write at home, I can’t have any noise, and I need to be comfortable. Music is a distraction when I’m writing, but I will listen to music for inspiration at other times. After writing for two or three hours, it’s important to take a break—get up, stretch, maybe go for a walk.
Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each character all the way through to the page? Do you people watch to help with development? Or do you build upon your character during story creation? I’m a character focused writer. In psychology there is something called Internal Family Systems, which means everyone has facets to their personality. Identifying those facets is useful for character creation. Most of my characters tend to represent some aspect of me rather than from people watching.
Do you have a character that you have been working on for a long time that still isn't quite ready, but fills you with excitement to work on the story? I have some as-yet-unformed characters that I hope to introduce in the next novel. I couldn’t cram all my ideas into Arrow’s Flight. There are people I call the Err-Iss, who are amphibious and parthenogenic. They also have some other unique abilities that I’ll reveal in my next book.
Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character(s)? If so which one(s)? Elorien, Reed, Arrow, Wulfast, Gertie and Risto, are my favorites, but I have a soft spot for Olive and Kai, too.
Do you have a character that you have been working on that you can't wait to put to paper? There’s a mercenary character with a tragic backstory and a secret, called Marius Trove, whom I developed years ago and am waiting for the right story line for him.
Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details? I’m working on a short story about Olive, Kai, and the little goblin Scritch. As it turns out, Scritch has a bunch of siblings and is missing them, so off they all go to find them.
What are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year? The Precepts provide the themes for each novel. The first Precept is “know thyself” which is the theme of Arrow’s Flight. There is also the Code of Chivalry, which will provide the themes for a series of short stories/novellas. After writing the first short story, I’ll start on the next novel. I want to develop Jolvon and Eräviina more, too, so I plan to feature them in the second book.
