Hey all you romantic suspense fans! Julie Ann Walker here, happy as a clam at high tide to be back on the Romance Junkie to promote the newest title in my bestselling Deep Six series, SHOT ACROSS THE BOW. I like to say this book is The Goonies (for adults) meets Six Days, Seven Nights. If you love action, adventure, romance, and a little treasure hunting, then this story is for you!
To celebrate the release of SHOT ACROSS THE BOW, I’m giving Romance Junkie readers an exclusive sneak peek at the book. To set the scene, our hero and heroine are stranded on a desert isle. They’re discussing their favorite animated movies to pass the time.
Without further ado…
The gentle breeze had turned cooler with the setting of the sun. It caught a lock of Mia’s hair, brushing it across her face. Romeo had to tuck his hands under his legs to keep from smoothing it behind her ear.
When she did the deed for him, she made the move look so sweet and innocent and unconsciously sexy, he nearly groaned again.
“If we can count Pixar movies, then mine is WALL-E,” she admitted quietly. “I adore that little robot.”
Romeo had been red hot for her all evening long. No, that wasn’t right. He’d been red hot for her since the first moment he saw her. It was just that now he knew he could act on all that red hotness. But her admission burned something new inside him. Something decidedly north of what’d been burning previously. Something that lived a little left of center of his sternum.
He didn’t need a degree in psychology to draw a correlation between her chosen life and a movie about the last robot on Earth. A lonely, sensitive creature that marveled at things left behind by a society long since gone.
“I always thought that movie was sad,” he murmured. “But brilliant too. There’s hardly any dialogue and yet you find yourself entranced by the story.”
She didn’t add to that. Instead she eyed him curiously and asked, “How about you?”
“Beauty and the Beast,” he confessed without having to give it a second thought. “I like the idea of a woman falling for a man because of who he is on the inside instead of how he looks on the outside.”
He realized he’d revealed too much when she grew still and quiet despite her gaze filling with speculation.

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Julie grew up in a house full of women – she has three older sisters. As you can imagine, there was no lack of drama… or romance. Her mother enrolled her in a book club as soon as she began to read and it was the small spark that ignited her voracious appetite for the written word.
Because of Julie’s early immersion in literature, she found writing came quite naturally. In high school, she won multiple writing contests and was the proud senior editor of The Tiger’s Tale – her school newspaper.
During her college years, however, she longed for a challenge. “Reading and writing felt like second nature to me, so I looked for a way to flex my mental muscles,” she recalls. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, Julie began teaching advanced high school mathematics.
“I loved working with the students and facing the challenges of the classroom, but I longed for the occasional snow day when I could race to the local book store, buy two or three new novels, and curl up in front of the fire to read.”
It wasn’t until a fortuitous move to Chicago that Julie once more returned to her first passion.
Now Julie loves to travel the world looking for views to compete with her deadlines. When she’s not writing, she enjoys camping, hiking, cycling, cooking, petting every dog that walks by her, and… reading, of course!
