BLURB
Brutal injuries can leave scars.

As the teenaged survivor of a savage dog’s rampage, it’s a lesson Bryce Gallo will never forget.

Struggling to cope with his damaged appearance, along with a newfound fear of dogs and mounting anxieties at home and school, he flees his suburban home into the moonlit streets of St. Charles.

Along the roads of suburbia and through the shadowed heart of the city, he encounters Wheels, a maintenance worker for a series of apartment buildings; Paloma, known to some by the moniker of Lady Luck; and a woman in a dark house who is, as far as Bryce can fathom, like no one else he has met before.

His new life is not without obstacles or enemies, he learns. The future is a battlefield. Fire and smoke loom on the horizon, and his dangerous course may see the lives of his family and friends forever changed.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Interview with  . . . Tommy B. Smith

How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?
I'm told I am versatile. I often adapt my approach to suit the story, so it may vary from one effort to the next. I'm most often a writer of horror and dark fiction, though my newest novel is a suspense/coming of age tale, Anybody Want to Play WAR? Here you will find a character-driven story spurred by direct action and reaction, character mannerisms and dialogue, and very little in the way of "purple" prose.

Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you?
Both. To educate oneself is important for the sake of improvement, and it's important to understand the basics of writing if one wants to become a prolific author, and in time, understand the nuances. The self-publishing surge has opened a gateway for many who would bypass these processes of education and development, however, and it definitely shows in today's flooded book market.

At the same time, this is something I've done for a while now, so for me, it does flow naturally to an extent.

What mindset or routine do you feel the need to set when preparing to write (in general whether you are working on a project or just free writing)?
I don't have much in the way of a routine or rituals. I just drink a cup of coffee and write, though mindset is crucial to consider when launching into a longer, immersive work. I tend to find a particular vantage point for working through each book.

Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each character all the way through to the page? Do you people watch to help with development? Or do you build upon your character during story creation?
With the primary characters, I often know them well before they enter the story. Most have stories of their own, and though their stories aren't always told in the book, their aspects often color the characters' dimensions.

Do you have a character that you have been working on for a long time that still isn't quite ready, but fills you with excitement to work on the story?
There is a character who has a story, as mentioned above, which is untold. That's probably the best way to phrase it as it pertains.

Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character(s)? If so which one(s)?
There are some. In the new book, a character reemerged from the rubble of the past, but I don't want to say too much about that and spoil it for the readers.
Then we have Paloma, who also appears in the new book. She was an interesting character to write.

Do you have a character that you have been working on that you can't wait to put to paper?
There are many to come, but only so much time to commit them to paper. All in due course.

Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?
The current work-in-progress is a dark thriller-style tale set in the American Southwest.

What are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year?
Finish the new book and hopefully sell the one I wrote before that. I would like to sell some more short stories, though I don't make it as much of a priority to do so anymore. I've accumulated a vast collection of them, but they don't seem to fit with most of the markets of late.

Have you ever felt that there was something inside of you that you couldn't control? If so what? If no what spurs you to reach for the unexperienced?
Sometimes, there are different "somethings" vying for prominence. I wrote Poisonous, my horror novella, because of this.

Where would you spend one full year, if you could go ANYwhere, money is not a concern? What would you do with this time?
A formidable sea-bound vessel, so I could see many different places. Would that be cheating? I can envision myself looking out at the sea, enjoying a tasty beverage each day and taking excursions onto land whenever we reached a port. That sounds more interesting than being stuck in a single place for a year.
