Why This Type of Urban Fantasy for YA?

I would love to say I have a real answer for this question. This story started off with a single idea what if—what if the wolves were in charge of the balance of the world? It grew from there. It lead to who would be their guardians and how would they play a part? I did what any good writer would…I researched then I let the words flow.
Nox came from that research. I found a single line about the Goddess of Nox which actually means Goddess of the Night. Nox had two children in her arms, sleep and death. That was it…that’s all I had. That single line made me wonder what the Goddess Nox would have been like. See she wasn’t around during the times Zeus and Athena. She existed long before the Greeks created the written word. This gave me the freedom to create her any way I wanted.
Then came the wolves and their rules. Never bite a human. What would happen if they did and what would that mean to the Fates and to Nox? That’s how this story began---with a lot of what ifs. I knew that a tribe of shifters needed to have the ability and freedom to exist in all of their natural forms. That meant a small town and that a forest would be important to them. I also wanted my main character Jonah to be in the process of self-discovery. What I didn’t want was to have him be bit and then spend the rest of the story having him turn into something evil. I wanted this to be part of his heritage and in his genes. I also wanted him to be a leader but not in charge. He isn’t the Alpha but he is just as trusted as the alpha.
This series took me to places I didn’t want to visit and deep into the darkness of my own self. That being said, I don’t remember there being any conscious thought about this book being either Urban Fantasy or Young Adult. Perhaps I’m wrong in that it is neither and both in many ways. As this world opened up to me, there were times I wondered why it was given to me. It broke my heart in many ways and made me stronger in others. I figure if it did that for me, then sooner or later, it will do that for others. That is without a doubt the one true test of being an author…does it entertain?
Ultimately that is the question I await an answer on. Did I do my job? Did I create a world that felt real, that touched your soul and most of all that made you wonder…what if…
The question is Why Urban Fantasy in this Young Adult? I guess I don’t have a straight up this is why answer for you. All I can give you is where I started and allow you to take the journey with me. This started with a what if and ended in a world that will forever hold the strings of my heart. Maybe you can let me know if I did my job by dropping me a line or two or leave a review. Joann H. Buchanan was raised in a Military family and at the age of 19, followed in her father’s footsteps and joined the Navy. She went to college at OPSU in Oklahoma, majoring in CIS, but the love of writing made her ultimately come back to it.
After Dark is Joann’s fifth book. Joann and her husband John have five children and live happily in the heartland of middle America.
