The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . A DUKE BY DEFAULT (Reluctant Royals, #2) . . . I was so hesitant to read about Ms. Portia. I was not very fond of her or her choices in book one of this series. I could see that she was not going easy on the path she was on. She was a bit questionable as a friend. Now, add to that and  her going overseas for another one of her adventures in to art media/project metal working. I find that a broody sexy Scotsman rang a few bells and then some. This one was just as fun as book one. I love Tav. He was the glue for me. He kept me coming back for more. I did also enjoy watching Portia blossom and take hold of her life. A Duke by Default was a delightful addition to the Reluctant Royals.

Watching Portia struggle with herself and what she was feeling and the way that she was so hard on herself allowed for me to connect more with her. She was focused but not focused. She has her own way of connecting with things and making them work for her. She was a people pleaser but it was not plain and simple that way. She wanted to be loved and wanted. She had a hard life at home and with her own family. I did not like her parents not even a little bit. I did however love her sister. Of course, having a chance to see in to the live of the prince and princess was nice also.

Tav was a unique man. He had is how set of issue to work through. He had a man that wanted what he had and had what was rightfully his. I did not like his cousin and I am still on the fence about his cousin's sister. She seemed to think for herself in one instance and then not in the next. Then there was his brother, mother, father and sister-in-law. they were a loveable set of people along with the neighbors and the children they worked with.

A Duke by Default  allowed for a deeper connection with the secondary character and a larger understanding of the world around them. The world of society and pomp was worse then just being a no body. Everyone in that world wanted something. I did however love that the queen had a sense of humor and some spunk.

I am very much anticipating the next installment in this series.

BLURB
Award-winning author Alyssa Cole’s Reluctant Royals series continues with a woman on a quest to be the heroine of her own story and the duke in shining armor she rescues along the way…

New York City socialite and perpetual hot mess Portia Hobbs is tired of disappointing her family, friends, and—most importantly—herself. An apprenticeship with a struggling swordmaker in Scotland is a chance to use her expertise and discover what she’s capable of. Turns out she excels at aggravating her gruff silver fox boss…when she’s not having inappropriate fantasies about his sexy Scottish burr.

Tavish McKenzie doesn’t need a rich, spoiled American telling him how to run his armory…even if she is infuriatingly good at it. Tav tries to rebuff his apprentice—and his attraction to her—but when Portia accidentally discovers that he’s the secret son of a duke, rough-around-the-edges Tav becomes her newest makeover project.

Forging metal into weapons and armor is one thing, but when desire burns out of control and the media spotlight gets too hot to bear, can a commoner turned duke and his posh apprentice find lasting love?

EXCERPT:
What was he doing? With his apprentice? In the courtyard?

She was right to pull away from him.

“I’m sorry,” he said, yanking his hand back.

“You should be,” she said. “I have very sensitive skin.” Then she pressed up on her toes and kissed him.

The kiss was not what he’d imagined. Because, of course, he’d imagined kissing her, and in his mind she had been aggressive and take charge, pulling him down and wrapping her legs around him. But this kiss was hesitant, though she’d initiated it, soft and just a whisper of sensitive skin rubbing over sensitive skin, as if she was prepared to pull away and run off at any second.

Can’t be having that, can we?

Tav’s arms slipped around her waist and pulled her up flush against him.
