Info
Jack
Wallen is what happens when a Gen Xer mind-melds with present day snark. Jack
is a seeker of truth and a writer of words with a quantum mechanical pencil and
a disjointed beat of sound and soul. Although he resides in the unlikely city
of Louisville, Kentucky, Jack likes to think of himself more as an
interplanetary traveler, on the lookout for the Satellite of Love and a
perpetual movie sign...or so he tells the reflection in the mirror (some times
in 3rd person). Jack is the author of numerous tales of dark, twisty fiction
including the I Zombie series, the Klockwerk Movement, the Fringe Killer
series, Shero, The Nameless Saga, and much more.

How
would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your
work?
I
always tell people my writing is like prog rock—there are deep themes, a heavy
mixture of rhythms, and the prose sometimes leans toward the poetic. I love
words and crafting them in such a way that might not fit the standard
narrative...but still make sense within the world in which I’m writing. I tend
to place a lot of musical easter eggs in my books, as well as numerous pop
culture references. My narrators also tend to be self-aware at times.
What
are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year?
As this
year is almost over, I’ll take a look at 2018. Outside of continuing all of my
book series (and finally getting back to my Fringe Killer series), I have a
great idea for a book I plan to write and submit to the Big6 publishers. I
figure I now have the platform, the audience, and the writing chops to take on
the big guns.
Do
you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows
naturally for you?
It
flows naturally for me. I was a professional actor for 30 years. I have an MFA
in acting from Purdue university, where we were taught to trust our instincts.
I hold onto that very dearly and allow it to guide me through the telling of a
story. As I write, I always have the running film of the story in my head. If
the film is playing out naturally, all systems are nominal. If I’m having
problems seeing the film of the story, something is wrong and I have to fix it.
These two things combine for a very natural and organic process for me.
Do
you have a character that you have been working on for a long time that still
isn't quite ready, but fills you with excitement to work on the story?
Not so
much a character, but I’ve been building up to a metaverse. This converging of
every universe I have written will begin in my upcoming novel “Suicide
Machine”. I’ve been plotting this out for quite some time—dropping hints here
and there. I’m ecstatic about how this is playing out now.
If
you could spend one-week with 5 fictional character, who would they be?
That’s
a tough one. But I’m going to go with:
·
Puck
(from A Midsummer Night’s Dream)
·
Sherlock
Holmes (however, I would want it to be Jonny Lee Miller’s incarnation from
“Elementary”)
·
Pie'oh'pah
(from Clive Barker’s “Imajica”)
·
The
Cat in the Hat (because, absolute anarchy for a day would be a blast)
·
Death
(from Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman”)
Where
would you spend one full year, if you could go ANYWhere? What would you do with
this time?
I’d
spend it hiking the Appalachian Trail. Solitude does wonders for the
imagination. I’d conjure up unheard of stories, develop countless characters,
and unique ways to bring them all to life.
Can
you share you next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?
I am
currently in the editing process with my book “Dead Twin Sister” (the sequel to
“The Dark Seduction”, that stars real-life rock
band, Die So
Fluid), as well as about to finish up the first draft of “Suicide
Machine” (The sequel to “Suicide Station”). I will then be embarking on
co-authoring a new series, for Devil Dog Press, with Jaime Johnesee and Christine Sutton, called “Hell, Inc.”
