The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of SONNET COUPLED . . . Beautiful. Sexy. Sweet. Sonnet was the young woman that had the over, over protective father that set a path for her and she followed it. Well, until she couldn’t. Or should that be wouldn’t.
Sonnet was the dutiful daughter even in death. She followed the path that was set for her by her loving and protective father. He wanted better for his daughter. She was so close to achievement. Then a few setbacks take place. None of which she could have imagined. Now needing comfort and security she accepts a housemate to help out with expenses and security. In comes Griffith. He had his own path that he wants to follow. And the sexy, sweet, alluring Sonnet was not part of them, until she was.
I got no less that what I expect from Roxanne. I got me a sexy, sweet, slightly erotic read with two people that didn’t count on the other one coming in to their lives at-this-point-in-time. I loved the characters and the backdrop. Two set and determined individuals that need to attain their goals. Find that to be together may mean a little sacrifice and understanding. Come get caught up in the lives of Sonnet and Griffith. Find the choices they make turn them into something so much more when its all done.
Sheltered and cosseted, Sonnet Mendoza abided by her papi’s wishes her whole life: no boys, studies first and always. Now an ER nurse in a busy Chicago hospital, medical school is so close Sonnet can taste it—just like her father always wanted. Just like she can she can taste all the things she wants, like Griffith Parker, the man of her dreams and her new housemate.
Working “graves” in a large hospital as a security guard while attending the police academy during the day doesn’t leave ex-Marine Griffith Parker any personal time, but after meeting the beautiful Sonnet Mendoza business as usual is anything but. Sassy, smart…and interested in him, too? Except, she’s made an art of keeping her distance, and she's been clear that her plans don't include him. But the heart wants what the heart wants. His wants Sonnet. He’ll put it on the line to win her.
Nails scraped along the wood of her bedroom door, and she turned her head toward it. She knew without a doubt he was there, behind it, the way you know someone’s watching you. The doorknob moved as if it would turn, and she caught her breath.
If he comes in here, I’ll let him do what he wants. I’ll welcome it.
The thought scared and thrilled her at once. She wanted him. She was so not in control with this man, and it terrified her. But on the other hand, she hungered for him. The doorknob returned to its normal position after a minute. His footsteps retreated. When his door closed, she stared at the ceiling, and tried to breathe.
Sonnet waited a good fifteen minutes before leaving her room to take a shower and get ready before she headed back to the kitchen. The clean freshness gave her a sense of control, as if it would ward off the carnal urges Griff brought out of her.
She opened the kitchen curtains, cracked a window, turned on some music, and set about to actually make breakfast this time. Once the eggs were scrambled and the bacon sizzled, she fixed plates for them.
His door creaked open, and his footsteps echoed in the hall. She wiped her hands on a dishtowel and set it on the counter. “Hey, so I made us bacon, eggs and toas—” Her voice caught in her throat when she saw the set of his face.
He walked straight toward her, determined. And it seemed like nothing–a simple movement, a play of light and shadow in a sun-splashed patch by the open kitchen window, but she knew, inexplicably, he was about to kiss her.
