BOOK BLITZ w/EXCERPT - YA ACTION - LIKE A HERO by Michael J. Bowler

Like A Hero
by Michael J. Bowler
Publication date: October 18th 2022
Genres: Action, Adventure, Young Adult

BLURB

Courage can be costly. Orphaned brothers Vincent and Dennis Villanueva learn the truth of those words when they create a masked crime fighter and turn him loose on Los Angeles. The brainchild of fourteen-year-old Dennis and embodied in twenty-one-year-old Vincent, “Invictus” hits the streets to jumpstart apathetic Angelenos into taking a more active role in their city.

But reality isn’t a comic book. Vincent finds poverty, homelessness, drug addiction, abuse, and cast-off children. Labeled a vigilante and criminal, the shy grad student with formidable martial arts talent and abysmal people skills soon doubts his ability to make an impact.

Forced to straddle an ambiguous line between moral and legal, he becomes disheartened and secretive, hiding the truth of what he’s doing from Dennis and driving a wedge between them. Feeling neglected, Dennis infiltrates a dangerous drug ring to show Vincent he can be just as heroic, not knowing that the woman in charge is weaving an insidious plot against Invictus as part of her citywide scheme of vengeance. In a race against time, Vincent must regain Dennis’s trust before the brother he loves is lost to him forever.

SNEAK PEEK:

Dennis lay face down on the soccer field, while men in ski masks strolled among his prone classmates waving semi-automatic weapons at anyone who moved. He considered employing his martial arts skills, but being skinny and only passably good, such foolish courage would probably get him killed.

He shook his hair from in front of his eyes with a slight jerking motion and focused on James and Linda, lying on the field off to the side with the rest of the parents.

James had his head slightly raised and Dennis caught his eye. When a gun- man approached, James quickly returned his face to the grass. James wanted to intervene. That was obvious by the way he kept looking around for some kind of opening. But could he do anything without getting people killed?

The masked men called themselves “anarchists” and were well armed. Despite lying prone for the past forty minutes, Dennis had managed to spot sentries pa- trolling the rooftops, apparently stationed there to prevent the cops outside from storming the school and making their way to the field. He’d also noted the types of weapons these guys carried and considered how best each could be disarmed if this was a comic book scenario.

Except it wasn’t.

He considered the anarchists’ claims. They said they were “anti-capitalism” and “anti-public-school indoctrination,” but then they demanded twenty million as ransom for not killing him and his classmates, which sounded pretty capitalistic to him.

Raising his eyes once more, he noted a big, broad-shouldered dude wearing a black and blue ski mask, staring right at him while chatting with a burly guy holding an Uzi. Dennis averted his eyes and hoped he hadn’t called too much attention to himself. He’d overheard them earlier as they conversed by walkie-talkie. Masked guy was called “C-1” and burly guy “C-2” by the other anarchists, so he figured they ran the show.

He glanced over at Jackson and Kenny lying a few feet away. His two best friends looked terrified. Jackson’s curly hair partially hid his brown eyes, but Kenny’s bright blue ones screamed pure fear. Dennis tried for an encouraging smile, but it was difficult with his cheek pressed against the grass.

All his comic book scenarios started much like this one, except the hero al- ways knew what to do. As annoying as Robin could be, he’d know what to do even if Batman wasn’t around. Dennis’s mind raced with ideas. He knew James was packing—on duty or off, James always packed. But if he pulled his gun, kids would die.

I wish I’d thought of something when these guys first showed up.

Instead, he’d frozen with fear when the masked men flooded onto the field. And now with everything that had gone down since, Dennis trembled with the terrifying possibility that someone would die. Maybe him. Sadly, he wasn’t the hero of his dreams.

He peered at the administration buildings. Long and single story, the two main wings spread the length of the field. His gaze traveled up and he squinted with confusion. The sentry who’d been on duty at the north end was gone.

What the…?

Dennis knew his weaponry from playing Call of Duty and other war games, and that guy had been patrolling with an Artic Warfare Super Magnum sniper rifle, likely a .338 Lapua Magnum, but Dennis was too far away to be sure of the model.

Only now the guy was gone. With C-2 barely ten feet away, Dennis used caution to scan the south roof. That sentry was gone, too. SWAT maybe? He knew James’ mean-ass boss would have called in the big guns for something like this. But he was also sure those sentries had been up there no more than two minutes ago.

Could it be Invictus?

His heart thumped with hope. Vincent must know about this by now. Dennis pressed his face into the grass and pretended to look scared. Hell, he didn’t have to pretend. He was scared!

EXCERPT

San Jose, Costa Rica
“Cam?” Thirty-three-year-old Lydia Quarter busted into the two-story flat she shared with her boyfriend Cameron Griffin, ten minutes after receiving his text. “Cam, are you okay?”
She ran up the carpeted stairs. The aroma of Cam’s favorite honey and oat granola bars hit her the moment she entered the master bedroom.
Everything was in place except for his cellphone peeking from underneath the magenta sheet.
Lydia grabbed it with shaking hands. “Fuck.”
A figure in black shot out from the hallway and pounced on her.
“Help!” Lydia struggled as muscular, hairy arms secured her waist. “Help! Someone help!”
A giant, gloved hand covered her mouth as she gurgled a scream. “Don’t be stupid.” The black ski mask muffled his light Spanish accent. “You going to be a good girl?”
She nodded.
“Do what I say and you won’t get hurt.” He tossed her on the bed and jumped on top of her.
“No!” Lydia wiggled, his burly body smothering her slim frame. “Don’t do this.”
His obsidian eyes glowed with sin. “Do what?”
“This.” She panted, her long, copper-brown weave getting into her mouth. “What do you want?”
“I thought I knew…” His hand cruised from her shoulders and onto her heaving breasts. “Now I’m not so sure.”
“Stop!” She kicked and bounced. “Get the fuck off me!”
“Oh, I heard you were a feisty one.” He smoothed his hand across Lydia’s arm, the
overhead light forcing out the yellow undertones in her brown skin. “You don’t disappoint, do you?”
“Do it.” She jerked underneath him. “I dare you.”
He gaped.
“I’m not some woman you can just push around.” She wriggled. “I’ve been through hell and back in the last year, so there’s nothing you can do to intimidate me.”
“Is there something we can do to Cam to intimidate you?”
She lifted her head. “Where is he?”
He glided his fingertips through her hair. “He’s safe.” His fat tongue dangled
from between his lips, his purple mouth suggesting he smoked heavily. “It depends on you whether he stays that way.”
“Please don’t hurt him.”
“So that’s what it takes to get you to behave?” He pinched her chin. “Threaten your lover?”
She closed her eyes. “Please, don’t hurt him.”
“We won’t if we get what we want.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Cam’s a stubborn bastard so he isn’t cooperating, but you will, won’t you, Lydia?”
He took out a knife with a jagged edge. “Because you love him and would do anything for him, isn’t that right?”
“Yes.” Her trembling bosom stretched against her blouse as she took a deep breath. “I’ll do anything to help Cam.”
“Hm.” He brought his face closer and sniffed. “You smell like flowers on a spring morning. I love that smell.”
She clenched the sheet with both hands as he groped her. “Just tell me what this is about.”
He squinted. “You know.”
She sighed, plopping her head back on the pillow.
That damn ring.
“Theodore’s ring,” she whispered.
“Now that’s a smart girl.” He cackled. “We know Cam buried the ring in the Casanu jungle.” He dragged the knife between her breasts. “You’re gonna get it for us.”
“What?” She jerked upright. “Are you insane? You expect me to go into the jungle and find the ring? I don’t know where it is.”
“Bullshit. You and Cam are so close if he farts you smell it first.”
She grimaced.
“You’re probably the only person he’s ever told where it is. Maybe I haven’t made myself clear.” He pushed the knife into her bosom. “We’re not asking.”
“If you’re so big and bad, why can’t you go get it yourselves?”
“Because we weren’t the ones who stole it.” He settled the tip of the knife on her full lips. “This isn’t a game, Lydia. Get the ring or Cam’s dead. If you try to go to the police, your
boyfriend will be in a body bag before you can tell them what's going on.” He yanked her hair. “You hear me?”
“Y… yes.”
A calmness came over his eyes. “You're an exquisite woman.” He groped her thigh through her blue jeans. “You’re getting me distracted.”
“Let me talk to Cam.” She pushed his hand away. “Please. I want to make sure he’s okay.”
“Cam’s a lucky man.” He slipped his hand between her thighs. “Must be nice to have someone like you in his life.”
“I’ll get the ring.” She turned her face away as he pressed his forehead against hers. “Just go.” She closed her eyes, praying with everything in her he’d just walk away.
“I have to leave so soon?” He pushed his slimy mouth to her cheek, the soft fibers of the mask tickling her. “We can have some fun.”
“No.” Lydia tensed up, every muscle in her body contracting.
“I could hurt you but I haven’t.” He snickered. “Don’t I deserve a reward for that?”
“Go.” She held in tears. “Please.”

“What happened to the tough girl from a few minutes ago?” He puckered his lips, aiming for a kiss, when a faint buzzing sound erupted from his pants.
“Shit.” He leaned up, snatching the phone from his black jeans. “People always call at the wrong time, huh?”

by Nick Sullivan

Length: 7 hours 11 minutes
Released: May 12th 2020
Publisher: Wild Yonder Press
Genre: Action-Adventure

In the mangroves of Belize, something ancient lies hidden beneath the roots. And when it surfaces, so too will one of man's baser inclinations. The root of all evil: greed.

Boone Fischer and Emily Durand have enjoyed months of quiet on the tiny island of Caye Caulker. After surviving Hurricane Irma and a mountaintop madman, the two divemasters have finally begun to relax. Big mistake.

Following on the fins of the best-selling thrillers Deep Shadow and Deep Cut, this third Caribbean action-adventure thriller in The Deep Series takes the listener on a whirlwind tour of Belize. From the offshore cayes to distant lagoons, from tropical rivers to jungle ruins lost in time, Boone and Emily race to untangle themselves from a deadly plot that threatens to shatter their lives.

Born in East Tennessee, Nick has spent most of his adult life as an actor in New York City, working in theater, television, film, and audiobooks. After recording hundreds of books over the last twenty years he decided to write his own. Decades of scuba diving and travel inspired the Caribbean Dive Adventures. The first book in this series, the best-selling Deep Shadow, is set in the island of Bonaire. Deep Cut picks up on the little Dutch island of Saba. For more information on this series, visit www.deepnovels.com And for something completely different, visit zombiebigfoot.com to learn about his first novel, Zombie Bigfoot, which was #1 in Horror Comedy on Amazon. Nick has been recording audiobooks since 1994 (starting on reel-to-reel) and has been listening to them even longer. He has narrated over four hundred fifty titles in nearly every genre.

Boone Fischer
Boone Fischer was born into two cultures, his mother a country girl from Tennessee, and his father a sailor in the Royal Netherlands Navy. They’d met when his mother was vacationing in Aruba and Boone had been born a year later. Boone was blessed with dual citizenship and spent several vacations in the Dutch Caribbean. His father had engendered a fascination of all things aquatic in the young Boone, teaching him to snorkel when he was quite young; he became a certified diver when he turned ten. When he was twelve, his parents had separated, his father returning to the Netherlands. His mother continued to raise him in Kingston, Tennessee and while they couldn’t afford to travel to the islands, she often took him to aquariums in Chattanooga and Gatlinburg. After high school, Boone went to work as a presentation diver at the Ripley’s Aquarium in Gatlinburg, raising money for college. Heading to the University of Miami for a degree in Marine Science, Boone was fortunate enough to arrange a semester abroad in Bonaire. Within a month, he knew what he wanted to do. After graduating in Miami, he returned to the ABC islands, working for a dive op in CuraƧao for three years before landing his gig at Rock Beauty Dives in Bonaire. Boone has a nomadic mindset, always looking for the next adventure; but Bonaire was special, because after working there nearly three years, he met Emily Durand.

Physical Description: Boone’s nickname through much of high school and college was “Bean Pole”. He is exceptionally tall and lanky, but enjoys intense exercise. Lean and wiry, his body is sculpted, his arms and legs corded with ropy muscle. His hair is brown with sun-kissed highlights. His eye color has never been revealed.

Hobbies: Aside from scuba diving, Boone is an amateur bird watcher, and professional-level freediver. A powerful swimmer, his “Michael Phelps” frame can propel him at impressive speeds. He is highly skilled in the martial arts of capoeira and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Boone is mechanically inclined, and an expert in marine engine repair.

Emily Durand
Emily hails from the United Kingdom. She was born and bred in South London and spent most of her early life in Greenwich, a few blocks from the border of Deptford. Going to university in England, she supplemented her studies with a Phys Ed elective class in scuba diving. Upon graduation, Emily decided to travel; her dive training led her to work as a divemaster and she soon found herself on the Dutch island of Bonaire where she met Boone. “Em” is a free spirit with a fast wit and devil-may-care outlook on life. There is little she enjoys more than running verbal rings around the taciturn Boone.

Physical Description: At 4’11” tall, Emily definitely qualifies as “petite.” Her hair is blonde and past her shoulders, and she frequently puts it up in braids or a ponytail. If you spot Emily before sundown, there is very little chance she won’t be with her ever-present sunglasses. And there’s a good chance they’ll be lime green, the vibrant color being her favorite. And if you catch her without her shades, you’ll see her sparkling, green eyes. Emily is in exceptionally good shape, and she’s able to hold her own with Boone in the water, no mean feat given their respective builds.

Hobbies: Emily is an able skipper behind the wheel of any boat, and is a far better driver than Boone (and she never hesitates to remind him of this). Her underwater specialties include photography and fish identification, and she’s quite the artist. Impressed with Boone’s martial arts skills, she wonders about learning a discipline herself (and in Deep Cut, she does).
